I hear Panda fans touting the streak, or the 2010 championship game all the time.
What I DO hear Cats fans say is things like "Cats have been to the natty twice in the last 4 years and the semis 4 times....which makes them better than the Pandas." Also, "Pandas haven't won in Bozeman since Obama was president" Also "Cats have pwned the Pandas over the last decade"
Pretty different claims to greatness.
What if (God forbid) Ah Yat and Gillman got hurt on the first series and the Griz put up an amazing fight and lost by one point.
Would you say “yep! MSU was just the better team!”?

No dog in this race but there was a plethora of griz fans claiming they were the better team after we beat them in the Mecca. They just had a bad day. Now before the game is even played cat fans are to concede the winning team MUST be better?
Seems like it should be the same to me.

It’s a judgement call based on lots of factors.OldGriz wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 8:55 pmSo now even beating a team doesn’t establish that the winner is better? Then how is it established that the Cats are better? The ranking? I heard from you guys all year that the ranking doesn’t matter and the only way to establish who’s better is on the field. This is getting pretty squishy.onceacat wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 8:34 pmNo, I think we’ve already pretty well established that the Cats are a lot better than the Pandas. Even if the Pandas pull off the big upset this weekend.OldGriz wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 6:52 pmI’ve only found one or two guys here who agree that the team that wins Saturday is the better team. There wound never be such thing as an “upset” if the better team won 100% of the time.

The team that wins is the better team. No excuses. After the game when we've beat them 2 times in 3 weeks, and 3 times in 13 months, and 8 times in 10 years, they'll point to the overall record. Excuses is what they do best. C'mon Bobcat fans, the team that wins is the better team, the loser goes home. Sure I’d agree with this as a premise. But what he’s arguing is non sensical. He’s basically saying that whatever team wins is always the better team, which just isn’t true. Otherwise there wouldn’t be the concept of an upset.Vamos Gatos Vamos wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 9:18 pmThe team that wins is the better team. No excuses. -5.5 isn’t a “low” spread.OldGriz wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 11:39 amThe spread being so low (-5.5) means it’s purely a home field advantage in the oddsmakers’ view. I’m not as confident as the house. I think the Cats are better and would bet them at home or on a neutral field. However, I can always be wrong. This game will show us which team is better for sure. Why do I sense that if the Griz win, a lot of posters here will say all that loser crap like, “We’re still better, we didn’t play well, yada yada, blah blah??” Can’t we at least agree that the better team wins this Saturday?catapult wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 10:46 amSports Bet MT opened with cats -5.5 favorites. This is going to be an epic brawl. I see the gris moving away from the 4-5 yrd pass in the flats they did in Brawl 1.0 by taking more downfield shots and they will try again to attack our lb’s in the pass game. We just need to limit mistakes, play sound and win by 1 effing point. However, It’d be awesome if we win by 21.![]()

But it is. Especially considering how much of it is attributed to the home field advantage.PapaG wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 9:43 pm-5.5 isn’t a “low” spread.OldGriz wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 11:39 amThe spread being so low (-5.5) means it’s purely a home field advantage in the oddsmakers’ view. I’m not sure why it matters if fans still think their team is still better if they lose. That doesn’t change anything.ilovethecats wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 9:03 pmNo dog in this race but there was a plethora of griz fans claiming they were the better team after we beat them in the Mecca. I prefer to go the other direction and admit that my team wasn’t better, but I’m not going to petition the league to reverse it.
The Twins are my team and won the’87 Series. I didn’t think they were better than the Tigers or cardinals and I don’t care if anyone agrees or disagrees.
Talked to lots of Bison fans that thought msu was better than ndsu last year.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Re: Cat-Griz 2.0
I don't think the team that wins a sporting event is always the better team. Anyone who follows sports has probably seen a contest where the "better" team has been beaten by a "lesser" team. It's part of what makes a long winning streak so hard to accomplish. Or what makes a single elimination bracket exciting. You have to play your best or you can be eliminated regardless how good you are.
Terms like overlooking a team, getting caught in a trap game, getting upset, any given Saturday and many more all imply that the better team lost. That's why people say they were the better team on that day (another term that implies they might not have been the better team overall).
But who really cares? In the record book that team will be recorded as the winning team. A few years later no one but a few die-hard fans will know or care if they "just got lucky". Maybe the 1947 gris were a better team than the Cats that year, but I don't think anyone is going to try to make that argument now. The Cats are listed as the winners in the record book for that year and that's all anyone sees.

The Twins were the best team in ‘87 (congrats, Tom!) and the Bison were the best team last year. That’s the point of post-season playoffs and championship contests.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 14, 2025 10:54 pmI’m not sure why it matters if fans still think their team is still better if they lose.
