After watching Vigens presser from this morning I came away with the impression that Neil Daly will be the guy they expect to step up and carry forward. Nothing like being thrust into the spotlight early on! The upside is that the knowledge and experience he’ll gain the reminder of this season should give him a massive edge for the next few seasons mentally and physically.
Grebe and Daily have both looked good at lb. I believe this is Neil’s 4th year in the program, so he should have a pretty good handle on the concepts and terminology.

So does he take a medical? Are there exceptions for the 30% rule? I’m googling to much of no avail
Unfortunately no, he's well beyond the 30% mark and there are no exceptions.

Yeah to me Neil just needs reps. If you watch him in backup duty, he's improved every game. Again, he can really run sideline to sideline and he's a great athlete. You can just tell he thinks about it a little too much which causes him to get out of position. That critique just takes reps. Hell Troy needed reps because of the same issue. But when Neil does read the play correctly, you have a 6'3", 230 lb. linebacker with long arms and good speed who isn't afraid to pop.

While Bryce doesn't have Neil's overall athleticism/speed, he does have tremendous instincts and a nose for the ball. Guys like that find the field sooner than later and Bryce is a great example. Yes he's going through it in his coverage drops but that will all come with experience.

The silver (albeit small) lining, if there is one, is that whether it’s Daly or Greby, or a combination of both, have a couple of weeks to help get up to speed and 4-5 weeks before things REALLY get serious. Just like Brott these past couple of games, you never know who is going to step up and show out until they get the chance.

Well crap…. The Cats have other linebackers, but definitely not a “replacement” for Danny. He’s been such a great player for the Cats, I truly feel for him… So, who is the “next man up” behind him?
Redshirt freshman Bryce Grebe and redshirt soph Neil Daily. Bryce is a banger in the run game but doesn't have Neil's athleticism. Neil is more "Troy-light" meaning he is long and can really run but not as gifted as Troy in the instincts department. Again, no idea what is going on with Cole Bullock but it appears he has fallen out of favor. Ryan Krahe is another redshirt sophomore who has slowly been improving. Anyway, these are the four that we have to roll with McCade at this point. Bobby Daly is a hell of a LB coach so he's going to prove his value the rest of the way!
How about Cole Taylor? I believe he is a redshirt freshman. Still young, but physically and athletically he checks a lot of the boxes (from what I remember when he was recruited).
When they had their scrimmage a few months back, he was all over the field. Same day we got a look at Adam Jones. He could be one to sub in every now and then just to get some experience.

Dang!
Torn ACL University. Poilidore and Davis evidently had knee surgeries as well.
So those two, Dowler, Schmidt, and now Danny U... I know football is a rough sport, and injuries happen, but is there something different that should be addressed in their strength training and workouts? I know the strength coach does a fantastic job overall, it just seems like alot of guys with the same, or similar, injury.
I’m pretty positive every fanbase has this conversation every year.
Not entirely convinced of that...watched a ton of BS/FCS football over the years and you don't see these season ending/serious injuries #'s, per say, at dUMb, the DSU's, etc. And consistently. Perkins, Davis, Polidore, Schmidt, Danny, Dowler all All Conf. type players. Not to mention the last couple years, too. JMO.
Go tell that to Idaho
Who is hurt for Idaho other than their QBs? And those aren't season-ending necessarily. I know there is some bias as far as feeling like we get more but right now we are missing a starter from all 3 levels of defense for the year with ACL tears. Isn't Stillwell a knee too? Look at our luck with RBs the last 3 years. Starts to make you wonder after a while if it's not a systematic issue.

Do you follow football outside of the FCS?

You won’t find a team this hasn’t happened to. College, NFL, all of em. You have people that you’re getting to maximum strength and speed, things are going to break/tear/sprain. And yeah, it typically happens to starters since they’re playing more. Maybe there is something they could be doing different, I don’t know that, but what I do know is that injuries are common and every fanbase thinks they’re the only one that gets them.

Not every fan base roots for a team that lost 3 defensive starters to ACL injuries.
Can you name a couple other teams that have?

Some studies have shown that there is a greater tendency for knee and ankle injuries when playing on turf compared to grass. I believe the players almost constantly practice on the turf in the stadium, right? And most (but not all) of the BSC stadiums have turf. I'm not saying that's the reason, but I'd bet it's a factor.

I believe the team used to have spring ball and fall camp on intramural grass fields so that may have lessened wear and tear on joints. I know the majority of NFL players prefer to play on grass.

Also, not advocating that we switch back to grass. I know what kind of a mud pit that makes the field. I'm simply stating that I would bet that's a factor into our "lower body" injuries.

Edit: Figured I should add a source. There's plenty more if you google

https://www.center4research.org/injurie ... he%20grass.

I’m not going to sort by defensive players because, well, that just doesn’t make any sense.

Anyways, I found this, thought it was super interesting.

Of particular note would be the Chargers in 2016 with 8 ACL injuries bookended by years with 0. In general, injuries are flukey. Players are putting a tremendous amount of stress on their bodies, they get hurt, and because fans are generally focused on only one team, they think they’re the only ones with injuries.

It’s tough to lose Danny U. My memory is foggy — I can’t remember who the starters were — but there were times we lamented the loss of a key linebacker mid-season, wondering if their backup could step up. A couple of those backups are named Owens and Singleton. I think we’ll be Ok.

Didn't Daly play because of an injury as a freshman?

Bryce has played the most Will (Danny's position), and Neil has had more experience as a swing player (Mike and Will). Look for Bryce to start and Neil to play both positions on a rotation. I have no idea why Bullock fell off, but the next guy in is Krahe.
