Yeah, I can’t see Kagy ever closing. West Grant, near Romney Hall and the new health and fitness complex, has been closed for years now due to the construction of those facilities. I can see Grant closing down permanently but not Kagy.
Heard from some ASMSU people a couple years ago that they were planning on keeping Grant closed permanently after the Fitness Center opens. No idea if that is still the plan
It's not MSU's call. It's the cities. MSU wanted to close it a few years ago. The city said no. I'm sick of MSU thinking they own the town. With the new hotel going in. I don't see the city letting MSU bottle neck traffic into it.
I would think a good option would be to build a walking bridge over the top of Kagy leading to the stadium. One of my sons attended Arizona State and they have one over one of the major streets thru campus. It looks good and keeps everyone safe.
They already close Kagy down near the stadium on game days. However, there are a lot of people that park out there during the work/school week, so there might be a need to build something like that someday in the future.

Great project. Get all the graduating engineers to submit a design that they win ten years of season tickets if the design wins. I know that's really cheap, but if they are just graduating they are broke.
Great idea.

For reference of ASU's bridge.
Bobcat fans would take it as a challenge to jump off.

What is the lead time on steel right now? I was told bar joists are 20 weeks out. Is that just a joist issue or a steel issue?

The idea of a pedestrian bridge is very good, with all the student apartments and parking lots south of Kagy. But it would work better without 18” of snow on it. ❄️ 😢

If the University of Minnesota can figure it out, we can figure it out

Idaho ran the steam tunnels under the sidewalks so that they didn't have issues with snow or to access them.

The city will put in a box culvert under Kagy for people to cross at the BAC entrance. No overhead crossing bridge.

Is that a plan that is already being considered by the city or are you just anticipating that is what they would do? Either way, you are probably right.

It's currently part of the plan.

Thanks for the article link. Interesting stuff in there. At least it sounds like they are trying to be pro-active with regards to population growth south of town and how to handle the traffic that comes with it.

Idaho ran the steam tunnels under the sidewalks so that they didn't have issues with snow or to access them.
Minnesota St. did the same. The tunnels either melt the snow, or they use the tunnels to go between buildings. So when MSU was planning the steam tunnels I asked one of the Vice Presidents if MSU was doing the same — bare sidewalks and subterranean walkways. He said basically, “No way! We don’t want our steam tunnels leaking any heat, nor would we ever consider using them for pedestrian traffic!” Hmmm. I guess you can get away with it in Bozeman’s mild weather, but in Mankato there was an all different attitude. My sister-in-law had a locker for her coat, and she could go to all her classes in different buildings without ever walking outside.

I have actually been in a couple of those tunnels, even the newer and larger ones would not make for good passageways for students. Best leave those for phantom of the opera and trolls.

Any chance of setting the webcam up again for all us with no life to sit and watch this project?
