Vigen: "National championships is the vision."

Really really like the way Vigen commands the room already. I think the guy is a natural as a head coach. Time will tell as always.

However, this was my initial reaction to the video: "You're not Jeff Choate."

FWIW I went thru the same scenario my sophomore year of college. Our legendary coach surprisingly retired and in came a new HC no one had ever heard of (pre social media) along with all new assistants. They even replaced the head trainer and the entire S&C crew, it was literally like hitting the BIG reset button. After the initial shock and emotion wore off we understood, in no uncertain terms, that "every" starter was in jeopardy of losing their job as a robust open competition ensued through the spring & summer. Many 2's and 3's ended up starting while multiple 1's fell down the depth chart. Spring practices were 90% game speed and we found out real quick who the real dudes were. A few guys transferred out but the team galvanized around the new staff and their philosophies. We improved from 4-7 my sophomore year to 8-4 and 9-3 respectively and attended bowl games 2 years in a row. We punched through what we thought was our collective ceiling and never looked back. I was skeptical of Vigen against the candidate field a week ago as a Bobcat fan, but as a former player this change could likely be the missing ingredient to the Championship recipe. I'm all in... let's ****ing roll.

Vigen is just right for us. I don't know why these P5 coordinators put in for FCS jobs anyway. They want their position and their old pay too! I don't know what they think will happen...we'll go to the safe and pull out an extra $100,000 or so just because that's how much they expect?
Most of them are just trying to get a raise or promotion from their present team. I think we got the best of the second tier. Just about where our program fits. Of course we couldn't get a big time name like Bobby Hauck. A retread who couldn't make it in the FBS. I noticed he's not as cocky this time around. Then add the 0-2 with the Cats....he's just about at the end of his rope!
I do not like Bobby Hauck, but I do not agree he was a bad hire for the griz. I cannot deny the success he enjoyed in his first stint. Hiring him was much less risky then giving someone their first HC opportunity. If the Cats had coach who was as successful here, failed at the next level and was available, I would be all for bringing him back.

Besides, Bobby is so much fun to beat.
I think Hauck gets too much credit sometimes for UM's success even though they won two national championships before he came. He did a nice job but he was handed the keys to a pretty great program with maybe the biggest donor in all of FCS football. HOWEVER, he's a good coach and I don't see him going anywhere for a while. I have my doubts about whether he understands today's athletes but I have a feeling he'll learn that if he hasn't already. If he does that, I see him staying in Missoula for a long time and that continuity is huge at this level. The griz are lucky to have him and I don't see us getting somebody good who would want to stay for a long time.

Hauck doesn't seem like the same guy he was the first time through UM. Doesn't have the same energy. 2021 is going to be a real test for him. They lost a lot of good players. His Xs and Os are much better than his PR. I would've taken him back on the Xs and Os, but the off field stuff was way too much. MSU, WSU, SAC, to name a few have had great success hiring coaches with national searches. The Grizz botched the only national search they've done since first hiring Hauck. They hired in-house with Pflugrad, Delaney and basically Hauck2. The Stitt hire was a joke. I think UM will be looking for a new coach after 2022.

I think Vigen has stayed at most of his jobs for an extended time. With his resume on QB's probably could have moved up to large conferences. Choose to stay with Bohls. My main concern is will he have the connections to get the up and coming assistants that we have had the last 10 it so years.

Great Information! Hopefully we can sprinkle in a little more pass and get our stud set of TE's mixed into the equation.

So....my only concern with hiring a guy with the name of Vigen (and the way it's pronounced), Bobcat football probably just lost the support of the Montana Beef Council, Montana Stockgrowers Association, Montana Cattlemen Association, Montana Pork Producers Council, etc. Are we losing our ag roots???

PS: please note the tones of sarcasm in my voice 8)

His name was the first thing my dad (a rancher) brought up! I told him if Vigen eats a steak at his first press conference everyone will be fine.

That's great! We need to get some photos of the new coach on a local ranch during a branding day.

Here are some quotes from egriz when Choate was hired. I will admit there is a lot of "seems like a good hire" chat on the thread, but there are some gems - some smack, some legit:
"Yeaaaaaah who ordered the punching bag?" Bob Stitt stands up from his table "That's me, right over here!"
I've heard athletic directors refer to the football coach as 'the tip of the spear'. This is the first time I've ever heard an AD refer to a newly hired football coach as 'the nose of the clown' before. Way to go, Bozo!
WHOOOOOOO????????????????

never heard of him, he's a specials teams coach and DLine coach? that's it? oh boy, watch out !!! hahahaha.
Yeah, this year sucked. I thought it'd be a tough year for you when you put Kane in as a Coordinator for a few years, just like us with Ty ( sort of). But you all puked on Ash for that. Write it down, I think in 2 yrs you guys miss Ash more than you like Choate. Just my opinion.
Psssst . . . He wasn't their first choice . . . maybe not even their second! Peter Fields is my new favorite cat.
So this guy was a high school head coach 14 years ago. This could very well turn out to be a "Faustian" decision by the cats. By Faustian, I mean the hilarious Gerry Faust hiring by Notre Dame in the early 80s. Poor bobcats. The buffoonery just never seems to end.
I missed this yesterday. Is this seriously the best they could get? Don't get me wrong, the hiring of Coach Jon Choate definitely makes me very happy for several obvious reasons. Is a Choate another term for taint? Or is a Choate an old lady who has one big boob and one little boob? Either way, that program just can't seem to make a good decision. If you were to ask an alien who just landed on Earth which program has a coach named Jon Choate, he would guess Montana State.
I can honestly say I think they were better off with Ash then the hiring of Choate. I'm sure little brother will be banging the drum loudly and proudly for their new savior but I think they are headed right back to annual mediocrity.
It is interesting that the Wombats chose someone who didn't even make it into the final interviews at UM. He certainly doesn't come to the job as an earth-shaker; really kind of an odd choice given the hysteria in Bozeman over the state of the football program. A definite let-down for those all fired up over the prospects of Hill coming to Bozeman but, face it, the 'Bats managed to make a bad situation worse; a clumsy firing of a winning coach who had a bad year, a 40 year record of being a graveyard for collegiate coaches, a rabid irrational fanbase, a QB and asst coach conspiring to pressure the AD, an AD whose spine is kept in a closet in the president's office, and Montana's largest outdoor septic tank placed next to a stadium widely derided as a kitty litter box.

He is, if nothing else, a brave man.
There are plenty more but that's as much time as I want to waste on this project.

It's going to confuse a lot of tourists when they go into Burger Bob's and order a "Vigen Friendly Burger", and get actual burger meat.
