Boise fans want no part of Tom Herman from what I can tell on some fan boards. Funny though, one of their complaints is he can't develop QBs, same issue those people have with Coach Choate. Sounds like there is some info floating around that Herman is a bit of a sleeze as well.
I'd be fine seeing Herman in Boise and keeping our coach. I don't think he's a good coach and probably won't get the job. He had all the advantages at U Texas. Far and away the richest program in the country, playing in the fourth best P5 conf, in a state that is loaded with football talent, and only managed finishing between second and fourth in the Big12. He wouldn't have those advantages at BSU and I think would struggle.
Herman did just fine at Houston.
Lot of coaches have struggled at Texas recently. Despite its advantages, it isn’t an easy job.
And honestly Herman did well at Texas too, it's just that Texas expects perfection.
5-4, 7-2, 5-4, 5-3 in Big12 conference play by the team that owns the Big12 is not good. UT runs that conference, has its own tv network, and revenues of over $150M per year. UT should always be playing for the conference championship and in the running for the FBS playoffs. Texas never won the Big12 or sniffed the playoffs under Herman.
Texas expects a lot because that team has all the advantages and resources to win.
Except he inherited an absolute garbage team/program from Charlie Strong that had been falling apart for a couple years prior to Strong taking over. He didn't even get the chance to have a large number of his own recruits play as juniors and seniors.
Texas doesn't, and hasn't run the Big 12 ever. 3 conference championships and 1 National Title since 96. Oklahoma has 14 conference championships and a National Title in that same time. Texas is the Big12s UM, over hyped every year and way to full of themselves. The only difference is Texas has fewer championships of both types in the last 25 years. Tom Herman was actually building something back up at Texas.
Why do you think Texas A&M and Nebraska left the Big12? Because UT had disproportionate influence and pull in the conference. That's what I mean when I said they run the conference. But whatever. I do think Herman is a good OC and looks like he may have that opportunity at Auburn.
I took it as you meaning on the field they run the conference. I see what you mean now though. I want more high profile candidates for the Boise job so Coach Choate doesn't leave

Herman's buyout at Texas was $15 million. The rest of the staff was another $9 million. That's a lot of money, especially considering what the players get. If I'm a Blue Chip (top 50 nationally) player I'd negotiate a buyout of my scholarship in case the team decides I'm not good enough to get X minutes/snaps of playing time to show off my mad NFL skills.

I'm with you on that. It would totally suck if Bryan Harsin hired Herman as the OC at Auburn and Avalos as the DC. That just may be the perfect storm.

I could see them selecting Choate if for no other reason Avalos is which way the crowd is going.

That's nerve-wracking. One thing MSU has going for it is Oregon is an attractive place for assistants/coordinators. Oregon could probably get a good DC for a song, but they also have the money to bump Avalos pay. MSU is not out of the woods yet.

It was just brought to my attention that Avalos is currently making $845,000 at Oregon. Cristobal is making $2.7 million and the DC is at $900,000. So a big bump in pay may not be in the offing. This could help BSU get Avalos.

A lot of conflicting information out there. Some say it's down to Choate or Avalos, others say that they're interviewing 5 or more candidates today. I tend to believe the latter, I kind of doubt that a new AD would come in and not expand the search at least a little.

I really think Choate is the front runner. Even if they talk to others, I think they'll come back to Choate. He might not be the flashiest candidate with the deepest resume, but when you consider his entire body of work here within the athletic department it's hard to see any other candidate matching that.

Brian Johnson would be perfect for Boise State! He was fun to watch as Utah's QB, never saw him make a real mistake, and loved watching him cap his college career going undefeated and giving Alabama an absolute beat-down. He has shown this level of excellence as a coach as well - at 33 he is an up and comer, future big-time HC.
Leave Choate alone BSU

I agree with this. If someone knows what they are doing at BSU they will recognize that Choate is probably the least risky of the candidates.

Tough to say. The new AD came from Baylor, so may well have connections outside the Boise State coaching tree he wants to pursue. I agree that Choate is a very strong candidate, although I've seen nothing to suggest he is the front runner.

Once they interview him - or if they already have, he will be the front runner. I assume if he gets offered and takes the job, his tenure with Boise State will begin immediately.

I think they look at Choate as a guy who's young enough to put in 20 years but not so young that he'll be champing at the bit to get a bigger job. If he gets the job and does a good job there, I think he's more likely than most to retire there. If BSU gets anybody really good, they'll have them for five years and they'll move on. Seems like Choate wouldn't be looking for that power 5 job unless he really knocked it out of the park in a hurry.

Does Boise need someone to come in and establish a culture? I don't think they do. They want someone that will keep them on track and keep the fans happy with a high-octane offense. Unless Choate has an OC in his hip pocket, then I'm not sure how he's all that enticing. The two new candidates coming in are OCs. Guy from Florida and now one from USC.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't really imagine BSU fans being all that excited to move to a ground and pound "drag them to the deep end" type offense like we've been seeing in Bozeman. But maybe that's just me being hopeful to still have Coach Choate at MSU next season, and beyond.
