I gave up somewhere in Chapter 2.

Just couldn’t get invested in the plot.

Does someone like the sound of their own voice or what? Good grief that was 5 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Because as much as they accuse Cat fans of being little brother and having an inferiority complex (which is true sometimes), a big chunk of their fan base still have an attitude that they’re royalty.
Griz fans act like they're the school with 10 FCS titles in the last 15 years. Bison fans act less entitled and they have every reason to be dicks about it
There is a big chunk of that fanbase that genuinely think their program is on the same level as NDSU. Real “How do you do, fellow elites?” energy
Tbf the Griz are the NDSU of losing titles games. Their 6 losses is the FCS record
Wow! That’s a record the gris™ should talk about — it’s virtually unbreakable!

So many words. Written in such a holier-than-thou way. You could smell the Griz fandom about two sentences in. It just kept going, no way I'm reading all of that.

I do agree with the overall premise but gibberish like this is why Mony Mony even exists in the first place.

I started reading this article and I’m thinking definitely a boomer that is trying to say we wherent that bad during the streak towards cat fans.

But the little jabs throughout the article just kept making my blood boil a little more and a little more. Don’t try to ask for a truce when you mention “the best game day experience” being Bobcat stadium west. Don’t expect us to stop mony mony when you continue to mention the streak ftc and poor bobcats. These are all the reasons why mony mony exists, this is why we do it because it gets under your skin.

Damn right it was being sung in Nashville and across the state. We have DOUBLE the national championship football teams as the fizz. We have more conference championships than the gris (soon to be tied in big sky play). And we won two cat griz in one year, and kicked your asses in the first playoff meeting. ESG GCG

Long winded SOB. I quit reading about ten lines into it. He should get to his proctologist soon as it appears he has been butt hurt for a number of years.

I became a Cat fan when I first learned about football, sometime in the early 70's. I have stuck with them through the highs and the lows. I have many good friends that are Gris fans and alums. I will chant ESG when I hear Mony Mony and the Fight Song forever.

This guy doesn't understand our history and what we have been through to get where we are.

On a side note we sat near some UT Voll fans at the game in Nashville, They loved it and chanted with us, told me we have a great fanbase and that they will follow the Cats in the future.

First off, he was born in 1983 so he has zero knowledge of the rivalry before the streak which makes anything he says worthless. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, have the self awareness to understand that you literally have no idea what you are talking about. The old saying applies, it is better the keep you mouth shut and let people think you are an idiot than to open it and prove them right.

For anyone that is under the age of 50 you never experienced this rivalry before the streak. While it has always been a very heated rivalry, prior to the streak and up to about 3 or 4 games into it, it was still a very fun rivalry. For one, the game wasn't played the last week of the season. So it was typically played in much warmer weather, it didn't feel live or die, and the tailgates, regardless of which stadium, were a much more festive atmosphere (I have video from the day the streak started that show a much different atmosphere then what takes place today).

Starting about 5 years into the streak things started to change with the Griz fans starting to become almost unbearable. By year 10 (which was UM's first NC), Griz fans became the most obnoxious fans I have ever been around (while that is a generalization and there are certainly Griz fans that were not part of that group, by year 10 at best it was less than 20%). But seriously, it wasn't just the typical "glory day" fans and the college kids, it was PTA moms and grandmas.

Starting around year 10 we had the first Griz idiots start referring to the game as Griz-Cat which not only sounds stupid but was entirely intentional as an "in your face" to Bobcat nation. Has anyone ever referred to the Navy-Army game? Then the Griz fans started telling everyone that MSU wasn't UM's true rivalry, it was Idaho (and then later Eastern Washington). And if you are offended by ESG, since you are a librarian, try to do some research and look at Griz paraphernalia starting in about 1997. One that comes instantly to mind was the lovely t-shirts depiction of a Grizzly Bear raping a Bobcat. Now that's what you want your child looking at during the game. And it wasn't 3 ****** college Griz fans that had those printed up, it was in the thousands running around the stadium (and not just the Griz Stadium). Back in the day, the Griz fans came to Bozeman in the thousands (literally outnumbering the Cat fans in those mid to late streak years) and acted like entitled pricks.

Now let's fast forward to 2003. The Griz decided to up their game. It wasn't just the fans, now it was their head coach, who for you youngsters came of age just as the streak was starting and his brother was an all American on the team. We now had the BS that you couldn't say the name of your rivalry school and it was only referred to as State or that school to the east. He refused to set foot in Bozeman except for the game and the Griz stayed in Livingston. This despite the fact he essentially grew up 60 miles east of Bozeman. Now add in all the other inane comments (such as I wish there were 5 quarters so we could kick their asses some more or I don't know what they call the game but we call it an ass kicking). Now go back and tell me any Cat coach that ever acted this way. Sure some may have made a salty statement or two in private at a booster gathering, but not at press conferences. And certainly no Cat coach gave Griz fans the finger when they got off the bus.

YOU REEP WHAT YOU SOW.

Long story short, Griz Fans started it and now they are crying like little girls because a prettier girl moved into the neighborhood and the boys won't talk to them. Have some self respect. For those of us who actually lived through the streak start to finish no one was writing letters to the editors crying about how awful the Griz fans were.

Also, get out in to the world and experience true "heated rivalries" before you get behind your computer and start whining. If you think ESG is offensive then I suggest you never go to a Yankee-Red Sox game. They have songs they have been singing for decades and every song has a verse about the other team that would make a sailor blush. And they don't just sing them at Yankee-Red Sox games. They sing them at every game and change the words for the team/players they are playing, but there is still always at least one verse for their "rival." And guess what, after 2004 things have gotten even more heated.

Finally, enough with the all-time record, Griz fans you are only making yourselves look pathetic. Between 1897 and 1956,the two teams were not only in different conferences (or independent), they were never in the same division of competition. It would be like a Cat or Griz fan bragging about their team's lifetime record against Montana Tech (ouch maybe too soon for you Griz fans . . . but let's not forget about the Cats recent showing against Rocky). Griz fans if you want to start yapping about lifetime records, at least have the integrity to talk about the lifetime record when the two teams actually were playing at the the same level.

Post of the year nomination. I'm guessing I am of a similar age as you. Vividly remember bad football thru the Solmonson years. Took more than my fair share of sh$t from griz fans during the streak. Even lost long-time good friends because they couldn't refrain being arrogant, bloviated a-holes. Used to go to Missoula for Cat/griz games until I got tired of insults and vulgar name-calling. Last straw was when I had the back window of my 4-Runner busted out while I was having dinner after a game there. Well, tables have turned and they are finding out that it ain't so fun now.

My intent did not come out well.

I was trying for the fact it started out as a back in the day type of post which I think could have had potential to be a decent article. But instead being written by someone in my age bracket made the entire thing that much worse and just a whiney gris fan that got their panties in a bunch and doesn't know how to handle life without a participation trophy.

No disrespect was intended towards our more experienced fans with my boomer comment

Dude, it's science:

ChatGPT: Do grizzly bears eat feces?

Yes—grizzly bears sometimes eat feces, but it’s opportunistic and not a regular part of their diet.

Here’s why it happens:

Nutrient scavenging: Feces (especially from herbivores like elk or moose) can contain undigested plant matter, seeds, or nutrients that are still useful to a bear.

Protein and minerals: Carnivore scat may contain hair, bone fragments, or fat residues that provide calories or minerals.

Food scarcity: During lean periods—early spring or late fall—grizzlies may eat almost anything edible to survive.

Curiosity and investigation: Bears rely heavily on smell and may sample feces while exploring a scent, even if they don’t consume much.

Was at the game with some friends who reside in Tennessee and they thought it was very funny. Both the gris and Red Bird version. It made quite the impression. I know not everyone likes it but they sure did.

So the cheer is actually wishing them well? That's awesome! Once again the Bobcat fandom proves that character and sportsmanship come before all else. Good on us.

What bothered me about the article was the pretense of objectivity until the "full disclosure" of being a gris fan. Like many of you, I'm old enough to have lived through the streak and have experienced that insufferable fan base, some of which were even family members. It's really a heavy dose of irony how they complain about our obsession with sh*t when segments of their fanbase refer to us as the "scats", our stadium as the "litter box", our duck pond as the "****** pond" etc. Starting to see a pattern yet? Having said that, however, I believe that ESG/FTG and Mony Mony loses relevancy outside of the rivalry. My preference is to not even dignify that team by bringing up their name while facing other opposition, especially during a National Championship. I want the rest of the country to know there is only one school in Montana. In the end, we'll all conduct ourselves as we see fit going forward. This author lacked a sense of history about this rivalry and many of the early fans who lived through "The Streak", as well as dismissing the segment of their fanbase that have helped fuel it.

You could throw in, so to speak, their fans hurling human excrement at our players in Missoula.

I haven't heard of fans hurling excrement but I've almost been struck by Twinkies at wa-wiz before. They have an odd ritual of fans throwing things into the crowd which I've never understood. Guess I should be thankful it wasn't a turd. :D

This is very well done.

I've been around long enough to remember a good chunk of the 1956-1985 era when MSU beat UM 22 out of 30 times and won three national titles in the process. They only chant I recall MSU fans doing was "Pooooooor Grizzlies!" That was just your standard rivalry chant across the nation. Things didn't get out of hand until the UM's run from 1986 to 2009 when it beat MSU 21 out of 24 times. Griz fans were relentless during that stretch. Email was just getting popular and the lewd, tasteless jokes circulating were nonstop. You couldn't get away from it. I'm not sure that the ESG GCG chant is enough to wipe away all of that. Most fans that didn't catch any of the 1956-85 era probably don't think so.

MSU - 17 team National Champions (most recent 2025); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Sounds like someone is over sensitive if that hurt his feelers. Maybe a bit jealous. Typical gris fan!

CRY!

And I'm on record saying the ESG GCG cheer shouldn't be done when we're playing other teams... but it's not that big of a deal, just my preference. Great response doe... you hit the nail on the head.

There are thousands more examples of lack of class by Gris fans, but one specific instance comes to mind for me. About twenty years ago I was playing in a softball tournament in Great Falls, and I went to concessions to grab some food. I had my Bobcat hat on. The girl working looked college age-ish. I smiled at her and gave her my order. She looked at my hat and said, "Why do you still support that ****** team after all the ass kickings the Griz give them"" She was dead serious and there was zero... I'm joking, good natured ribbing. I was just like, wow... give me my hotdog you b*^&$. (I didn't really say that... I think I just said that yes things were rough, but it was going to turn around some day.

Great time to be a BOBCAT!
