#3 team in the country fires its coach because he lost twice. That would be absolutely crazy.

Re: Bobby Hauck is 7-8 vs the Cats
Yeah, that would never happen. A “suggested retirement” is the only way he leaves that isn’t totally on his own terms, and I as a Bobcat am thankful they put themselves in this position with him. If they slip at all next season, it will get ugly within their base of boosters.

As long as they are still selling enough tickets the administration is happy. Bobby owns that place, and will only leave when he wants to.

Either MSU fans are suffering from HDS or UM fans are in a cult.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

I don’t think they will get rid of Bobby. They would be frickin nuts to run him out a 2nd time (but it’s the griz and they are dumb, so maybe…)
It does kinda remind me of rob ash though. All time most winning bobcat coach, couldn’t beat the griz…. Was let go.
Now there were obviously other issues with rob ash teams toward the end there…. But it just shows how much this rivalry means. If you can’t beat the team over the hill, that is all that really matters to fans, doners, etc.

Agreed. Bobby, or really any FCS coach, isn’t getting fired for losing two games. That’s the kind of decision you might see from an SEC or Big Ten program, but not from schools that aren’t operating at an Alabama or Texas level.

As I have mentioned before, Hauck 2.0 had an average Big Sky Conference finishing position of 3.75 before this season. So tip of the cap to them for finishing closer to first than fourth this year. I do attribute some of that to missing UC Davis and playing 8 regular season games at home. Next year may very well be back to 3rd/4th place for them if they don’t improve their defense.

Ha! My first Cat GRiZ game was back in the year of our lord nineteen hundred and eighty one. Hard to be humble given our in state fan history. Bobby won’t be fired but I wonder is he’s ready to leave? If not, how do they encourage the changes they need to hit the top tier & compete consistently for the natty? I doubt he’d listen to lowly boosters or their qb club. His snarky press conferences just reinforce recruiting issues and you can’t fix that arrogance. They’re trapped in a black hole of their own hubris.

Re: Bobby Hauck is 7-8 vs the Cats
My prediction: he’s going to go all in on the portal again(he has to with his upcoming loss of 40+ players).
If it doesn’t work as well as it did this year and he loses to the Cats again, maybe goes 1-1 in the playoffs, then I could see the school not renewing his contract that will be up. It’ll look like a retirement, but it’ll be more of a “we’re done here” type of situation.
If he does have a good year and somehow pulls off a win in Bozeman, he’ll be renewed and we’ll see him for another 3-4 years. Then he’ll be done after that regardless how those seasons go.
I think he’s getting close to being done coaching one way or another, next year will go a long ways in deciding if it’s completely on his terms or if he is nicely told that he’s done.

Re: Bobby Hauck is 7-8 vs the Cats
If his contract runs out after next season the bigger question isn't if he gets fired/retired this offseason but if he gets a contract extension. Generally neither the team or the coach wants to go into a lame duck year. It's more likely they give him an extension with the unofficial condition that if he doesn't perform as expected he may be pushed into retirement next December.
Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

This is correct. Next years schedule has several more challenges though for them then this years did. They have to go to Davis, to NAU, and to MSU. Add a trip to OSU, hosting Idaho and fringe playoff team SUU, and an 11-1 repeat is very unlikely. If they get the same hit rate on their transfers along with the portal not taking any of their returning young stars, 10-2 9-3ish type of season and a home playoff win or two followed by a trip to Bozeman or one of the Dakotas for a loss is likely but he gets a new contract. If they get '24 type of results from the portal it could be a pretty disappointing season by UM standards. If that happens and its true that its the end of his contract you have to think there could be a "mutual parting of ways" or "its time to hang it up and go fishing." There just seems to be to many fans unhappy with the results.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 9:23 amMy prediction: he’s going to go all in on the portal again(he has to with his upcoming loss of 40+ players).

Not sure what you're arguing here Tom. They may have announced that they were going to play NCAA in 1956 but they were playing NAIA that year. The championship was NAIA.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 7:01 amMSU announced it was going to the NCAA in 1956 and thus began the Modern Era of the Cat-Griz sports rivalry. He has also not won in Bozeman since November 21, 2009 (16 years), and the Griz have not won in Bozeman since November 21, 2015 (10 years).
Some other fun Cat/Griz stats include the Cats lead the series 38-37 when both schools are in the same classification, and the Cats lead the Great Divide Trophy series (since 2000) 12-11.
Just thought you all might like to know!
Since MSU announced it was moving to the NCAA in 1956, MSU went 22-8 from '56 to 1985, then 0-16 from 1986 to 2001, then 13-10 from 2002 to 2025 (excludes 2011 game and no game in 2020). That's 35-34.
I just look at Cat-Griz as being on the same page starting in 1956. I call it the Modern Era of Cat-Griz.

I noticed in a few closeups of him during interviews, and on the sidelines, he looks...old. Now, he is 60 and Vigen is about 10 years younger I think, but he just seems a bit haggard to me. He said in his post game that he's loved being the head coach this year, loved his players, etc. But he just looks really tired. I'm sure after Cat-Griz he was getting alot of "you better beat them next time" comments from boosters. Can't imagine the texts and calls he got after Saturday but I doubt they were kind. Maybe he'll surprise us all and bow out gracefully after the first of the year. An 11-1 record is likely not in the cards for next year, nor is beating the Cats in Bozeman for Cat-Griz. Just not sure he can take another loss to the Cats; the tar and feathers might come out lol.

Maybe I'm feeling a bit sentimental around the holidays, but here's the deal. I am going to get lambasted for this but I kind of feel sorry for him. Hear me out. Yes he's a total dick, douchebag, a$$hole towards everything Bobcats... but I have heard from so many people that if you get him away from all that, he's actually a good guy and fun to be around, having beers on the river, etc. I talked to his sister at a house party several years back and she was incredibly cool and nice. It's the majority of the mouth breathing Griz Nation fan base that is the problem. They expect and demand that he treats the Cats like garbage..... and he knows who butters his bread. Plus, when you grow up getting beat up by your older brother, and keep thinking "some day...", and then you become bigger and stronger than him and start beating his ass over and over and over and over again, and know that he'll never get back on top, it starts to get old.

My first game was in Dornblaser (1982?) and the Bobcats won. Too many family things with the Gris to bore you all with but that crap during The Streak was always “good natured” on their thought pattern. Those guys could give me sh*t during it even when I was at WashGris watching,Vamos Gatos Vamos wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 9:15 amHa! Knuckleheads from the Bobby years forward are living in the past and a joke. It doesn’t matter other than it’s fun to be on this side of it at present.

I’ve heard this for years, and I get it, he probably is a guy you can sit down and have a beer with and is not all bad. But after 14 years of seeing his public “persona” in the rivalry, I don’t really care.
The old saying “when someone shows you who they are, believe them” applies here.
His back handed “compliments” after a loss, inability to give credit where credit is due the vast majority of the time, not staying in Bozeman because he won’t spend money here (while his daughter attended and graduated from MSU), his absolute inability to win gracefully (“battle of the brawl or whatever, I call it an ass kicking” comment in 23’ comes to mind) even though that was only 1 of 2 wins he’s had in his 7 years back, and the list can go on.
I for one hope like crazy he’s back next year, in Bobcat stadium, and gets run out of the place again and becomes the all time leader in Cat/gris losses for either team, in the process.
I don’t hate him, that’s extreme, it’s just a game that I have no influence over, but I don’t lose sleep at night feeling sorry for him, that’s for sure.

I actually agree with you. I’ve heard time and time again away from football how much people like him. He’s not a bad human, he just has chosen to bring out the worst in the rivalry.
