Hubris or Humility?

Post by kwcat » Thu Nov 27, 2025 11:40 am

Most all of us have had a comment at one time or another about an opposing team, especially one over the hill. More so we’ve had comments about their fans or at least I know I have. Going forward I hope I choose humility, but still have confidence in my Montana State Bobcats.

I sat in the north end zone dead center about eight rows from the top on Saturday and was surrounded by some pretty good fans. The amazing thing was after the game. I still ran into real knot heads that felt cheated after watching their team Play the best game of the year in front of their record setting crowd and yet lost. they came across as feeling cheated and angry.

Got to admit, I felt sorry for them. But had great conversations with other opposing fans on my way out.
Go Bobcats. Stay humble, work hard, take nothing for granted and play to the best your abilities, which I think will carry you the whole way to the end of the year

I have friends who are Griz fans and they are not the whiny, entitled fans one often encounters. I credit Booby Hack for injecting the toxicity into the rivalry as well as the arrogance and entitlement expectations in the gris fans and team. Started during his first stint, didn't subside after left (he wasn't gone long enough), and he's only fueled it since his return.

Our son attended dUMb (we were bad parents - but there was a woman involved). He also worked in um food service and was around their players. Took him to a Cat game and onto the field afterward to chat with players. Afterwards he said he didn't think that would ever be allowed at um. He was impressed with the politeness and appreciativeness of the Cat players. Said he didn't think gris players would be anything like that.

I listened to the Nuanez/Schmidt you tube video where they discussed how the Cats have overtaken the gris. Enlightening - especially that since they've identified the problem(s) they haven't been able to convince anyone to even consider changing. Give it a listen.

Can't make up my mind as to which is better - 55-21 or 48-14, but 34-11 will do.

I watched the Nuanez/Schmidt video, and Schmidt was spot-on. Unfortunately for the Griz, the problems won't end until Bobby retires. Bobby's hatred for the Cats blinds him to the reality that U of M is no longer the flagship university. They are desperately hanging on to the past, while MSU is on an upward trajectory that will continue for years to come. Go CATS Go!

I watched this Snapback Sports video on the Cat-gris game. Gris hubris is a definite understatement.
I guess these guys were the back up prize for not getting Game Day.

There are assholes within every fanbase. All you can do is ignore them and choose to associate with the normal, reasonable, respectful fans as much as possible. And try to act yourself like the opposing fans you have good interactions with.

I go down on the field a few times every season to chat with players. Monte Gillman and Cannon Panfiloff are the two players I try to find every time. They are super nice and fun to talk to. All of the Griz players I have encountered are great people and will often give their gloves/armbands to the young fans and will always take a picture with fans. I also said hi to Coach Green as he passed by the rec center, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

I know three of the Gris players fairly well. They are good kids that just happen to wear Maroon. They know I am a die hard Cat, but also know that I would be there for them in any time of need.

Just like any program, there are good kids and there are bad kids. The culture of the program is defined by the coaches. When you bring in 50+ players every year, it is hard to maintain a positive culture. We will see if Bobby can do that as he relies on the transfer portal. Next year will be a huge test as he will be forced to rely on the portal again. MSU learned hard lessons from the Kramer era. I almost gave up my season tickets even though we were competitive.

As for fans, the lack of humility by Gris fans has been evident for decades. I don’t know what to attribute it to. Being the big dog throughout the 90’s changed that fan base. I love my Cats but I also remember the dark days. I regularly reflect on how far our program has come. Gris fans regularly take a win over a terrible team and make it sound like they just played the Dallas Cowboys. They are insufferable fan base.

From what I have seen from this years Griz team, we have a great culture. A few transfers we brought in, such as Caleb Moran, were from service academies and carried high GPAs there. There is good fans and bad fans, I have encountered plenty of insufferable cat fans. The lack of humility by some cat fans can be attributed to the streak and newfound success. The lack of humility by some Griz fans can be attributed to the streak as well, we got so used to winning that some don't know how to handle it when we lose.

The players are not the problem with the Griz. Most, if not all, are very nice people who just happen to wear maroon. I hope they all have fun and have zero injuries, because at the end of the day this is just a game

F that! When it comes to the griz I am a very sore loser and a very sore winner. I hate the team, the town, their fans and the school! When they come to Bozeman I am in full attack mode the whole game! I had one couple sat next to me and lasted one play. Last year a young griz fan sat next to me and was gone by halftime!

I lived through the dark years, and it took me decades to let it go. But I don't have any dbag griz fans so once the streak stopped and we started competing it just happened. My griz friends are all good humans, a little misguided mind you, but good humans. The Schmidt interview this week was the first time I've heard a griz fan say what every other person who watches these teams knows; The Cat athletics and the University have lapped UM. 7 of the last 9 football games, and possibly 8/10 this year. Egriz, the land of living in the past.

Good for you Gary. I saw a generation of wall mart griz fans with no humility dish nothing but ****** for years. The fan base over there deserves some humble pie and then some.
