I was reading the NDSU forum (Bisonville) earlier and they seem rather unbothered by the prospect of Polasek possibly going to Oregon State. I guess if any fanbase should be well aware that losing a successful head coach doesn't necessarily mean that your program will take a huge step backward, it would be them.
Because they know, like we should know, it’s the program more than the coach.
They have either hired within or deep ties haven't they? That would ne my only concern if we went away from either of those options.

I looked online and from the perspective of several journalists in Oregon, Polasek is the favorite. Guess we'll see.
John Canzano of Oregonlive.com will have the scoop, but he has a paywall and I'm not in the mood to pay coin to see when my coach is leaving.

Oregon State is really hard to recruit to, even with the large area of availability. Corvallis will be Vigen's coaching deathbed, in my opinion. Denny and Mike Riley are the only two coaches with overall winning records since I was born, and I will be 59 next month. Denny did it with his connections with JC players like Nick Barnett, Ocho Cinco, TJ Houshmenzadeh, DeLawrence Grant, Richard Siegler, etc.

Another point - not sure if Vigen is the rebuilder that Choate is, very similar to the fact that Choate is, in my mind, not the CEO coach that Vigen is to get a program over that final hurdle that we are staring at right now. I think those are two different traits for coaches, businessmen, etc.
Great point. Vigen would face an extremely different set of challenges than what he had to face when coming to MSU into a building that had recently been to the FCS semifinals and had multiple future NFL draft picks on the roster plus a future Payton Award winner as a freshman QB.
This is very true, but what are the chances he gets to take over a successful FBS program?
Very low, but I was thinking less of his ability to get an FBS job (which I think he will if he wants one) and more of the likelihood of him being able to rebuild a bad program into a winner if he gets one.
His first FBS job isn't going to be a great one but it's up to him if he wants it to be a bad one or not. Going to a team that just fired its head coach on a short leash and will want a quick turnaround doesn't seem like the best spot for Vigen (at least there's no evidence that it would be). I think he'd be better off trying to get a job out of the second round of openings rather than the first. Replace a guy that walked out the door, not one that was thrown out.
I had similar thoughts. My Monday morning quarterbacking observations on rebuilds are they can be a resume boost or a death knell depending on how it goes and stress is there all the time to improve.
If he goes to OSU/CSU and fails it's going to be a long road to his next FBS job. If he succeeds, whatever that would look like there, he's on his way up. High risk, high reward.

Vigen is now in his 50s in a career that is increasingly trending towards younger and younger coaches getting head coaching jobs. If he wants to be a head coach at the FBS level I don't think he has a lot of time to be selective and wait for the perfect opportunity to come along. I doubt he's going to do better than the Pac-12 level so OSU and CSU both seem like pretty desirable landing spots. If he fails, worst case scenario he will have made millions of dollars to support his family for life and would have no trouble dropping back down to the FCS as a head coach somewhere.

Heck yeah! I'm pretty certain we would take him back at MSU if the timing was right.

This is exactly correct. Coach Vigan would be an absolute fool not to take the OSU job if offered. It pays $3 mil instead of $500k. Whether or not he's out of a job in four years is completely irrelevant. Who wants to work past 55 anyway? He could always get a coordinator position or fall back to the FCS if he really wanted to work or needs a job.

Honestly, Herder did a good job of laying it out and just saying "chill". OSU is not a good job, but these candidates will still go interview. We shall see.

Any chance he would be in running for Cal and be in the ACC.

A source with the Griz program is telling me that Vigen just signed a $30 million/5 year deal with TCU. DeNarius McGhee will be going with him with 2 years of eligibility left that was granted due to Covid and medical redshirt. 😂 😂

If you get the chance to coach against Stanford, SMU and Miami all in the same conference you take it!

Also, they've taken enough of our players. Might as well take our coach.

MSU has what’s referred to as a player run program. That’s not literally what’s going on, it just basically points out that the players are told what to do and they take it from there, give feedback and bounce ideas off the coaches and adapt.

Coaches strive to have their teams do this. It makes their job much easier. Vigen refers to this a lot. Whether the coach(es) leave and take a bunch of players with them, doesn’t ruin the program in place. It makes it vulnerable (depth/injuries) but the core remains.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

I think if he leaves we lose Lamson and both Dowler brothers, I'm hoping I'm wrong but I don't see Vigen not taking who can to help jumpstart the rebuild at OSU.

You might be right. I'm wondering if Lamson is willing to go to his fourth program to play for a team that might not be very good. The Dowler brothers might not want to end their careers on a rebuild either. Depends on how much cash is thrown their way, I'd guess. If someone can convince them to stay and play for a championship instead of a lower-end FBS program (currently), it's gotta look pretty appealing. I don't think any of their NFL stock rises by going to OSU, so why not play where you know you can be successful?

Vigen has known Lamson for awhile and he was able to get him to come to MSU instead of going to Bowling Green. The PAC is not the PAC of old but it will be and already is being seen as one of the top 2 G6 Conferences, Lamson for sure will go with Vigen.

The Dowler brothers may be different but OSU (despite their poor season) has a very passionate fanbase and some $$ to offer players. It sucks but we're considered 2nd fiddle to FBS, the allure are playing at the next level + some $$ could be hard to resist

I don’t think Lamson is going to leave unless the money is very substantial, and if they’re willing to pay a substantial amount, they can do better.

I'm sure we'll know more after tonight's QB Club meeting.

Was there a noon presser today?
