Sterbick as next HC?

Post by coloradocat » Mon Nov 24, 2025 10:21 am

I think Howe will get snapped up by someone before we can give him the job. Whether Vigen leaves this year or next year what do people think of Sterbick? He's got HC experience, MT experience and could open up Colorado recruiting if Vigen doesn't go to CSU.

Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

I suspect that Leon has been preparing for the eventuality of Vigen leaving for quite some time now, and that he has a pretty good idea of who MSU's new coach is going to be if and when the need arises. Sterbick seems like a decent candidate although I don't know much about him after only one season coaching for MSU. Perhaps the hiring of a more veteran OC with prior HC experience was intentionally done to put someone on staff who could take over the HC job relatively seamlessly if needed.

This is all hypothetical at this point....as it's certainly possible none of this comes to fruition.

I don't know a lot about Sterbick, but in my mind, he'd be behind guys like Daly and Ioane.

I'm not sure Choate and crew have more than a year or two left before they are let go....this could be a great opportunity for Kane to leave a sinking ship.

I also wouldn't mind trying to poach Brian Wright from NAU....I really like him as a coach.

If a guy like Kane is hired, I'd love to Army come back as OL coach.

Good call on Brian Wright, I just thought of that name as another former Bobcat OC when Sterbick was brought up.

I will be shocked if Vigen stays. My fear is who he takes with him as far as both coaches and players. I hope that whoever gets brought in as the new coach can continue this success that we are having, so hopefully we attract some pretty big name coaches.

I'd love to see Brian come back to MSU.
I'd strongly consider Daly. Not sure on Kane. Years ago I thought he'd someday be a head coach at MSU...I don't feel like he's been great since leaving.

Army left Nevada for unspecified reasons. I suspect him and Choate didn’t part on good terms.

I would prefer Daly, Owens, or Ioane over Sterbick and way over Brian Wright.

What about Paul Wolff? I think Poly made a mistake, he was just turning the program into his program.

I think now is the fine to make the play for Kane, if we are ever going to get him. Choate doesn't have long at Nevada you gotta think that someone wanting a HC job would need to jump before the firings happen.

He lost some head scratcher down the stretch. Not sure he is the guy.

Heard he said a derogatory comment to a player and was let go.

I actually think he’d be a decent choice. Is level headed, has had success as a head coach, knows Montana. I’m not sure why we would look outside our program. Do people want Ione as he was a former player/coach? Do we want to change the culture that we have now, as a lot of coaches people are mentioning will change this culture. We are a top program, not sure why we would want a coach from a bottom feeder Big Sky school, regardless of past resume, we can do better.

I think Daly would jump at the opportunity to come back as HC, that would be exciting

You may be right. However recalling your posts on gameday thread Saturday I wonder what you know about “level headed”?

Daly will certainly be on the list, as will Howe if he wants it. Count me in the minority but I've never been excited about Kane. Can't put a finger on exactly why but I just don't know that he radiates head coaching, leader of men vibes.

Howe has the energy and relationships with the current team to probably transition best, but he's such a great DC I'd hate to lose him in that role.
