Chant at Cat-Griz volleyball game

Post by aucat » Sat Nov 08, 2025 10:47 am

Last night I was truly impressed by the incredible turnout at the Cat-Griz volleyball game. The Brick looked packed to me--I don't know that we have ever had a bigger crowd even for the women's Cat-Griz basketball games.

I know this is the football forum but just wondering how other Cat fans feel about the fact that the "Eat S" chant has apparently offically become part of the Bobcat fight song? I deal with it okay I guess when we are playing the griz in football and maybe even men's basketball. I don't like it, but I deal with it.

Last night the volleyball game was attended by lots of families with children. After all it was a match between young ladies representing MSU and UM. The exellent PA announcer had JUST finished the announcement about the importance of good sportsmanship and that anyone exhibiting bad behavior would be escorted out of the arena. IRONICALLY, only moments after that our wonderful band played the Bobcat fight song and here comes the Eat S chant. Is this something we are proud of?

Granted, the chant does not come from our cheerleaders, spirit squad, band or even the fans. Rather it comes from the students, and we had a pretty good contingent of them there last night. I'm sorry but it was cringe worthy. Frankly, I find it odd that when we are playing a huge game against SDSU or some playoff team, the Eat S chant is there during the fight song even though there is not a griz in sight.

The players always exhibit good sportsmanship. Tommy Mellott was a great example. He played his butt off against the griz, but he always displayed outstanding sportsmanship. Why should the students be any different?

I for one would love to see the MSU administration provide some leadership to implore the student body to not chant this every damn time the Bobcat fight song is played, no matter what the sport or who we are playing. It is truly a bad look for a great universtiy.

You'll have to replace it with something. If you don't like something, come up with a better option, don't just complain..

I was there too, with young kids.

I totally agree that the atmosphere was incredible.

I also agree that, ideally, my kids wouldn’t hear that chant so often. However, I don’t really think it’s likely to change (especially not by the admin telling them to stop). So I take it as a teaching opportunity and move on.

:deadhorse:

But yes, I get it. I’m also fine with it at any and all Cat/gris games.

Hating the griz since 02.

I agree 100%. It is classless. Volleyball and basketball are in close quarters, and I always see a lot of children in attendance...not cool. It will probably be impossible to eliminate it from football games.

I'm not getting any younger so it's probably a good time to tell my wife and kids that I want a tailgating celebration of life, with everybody wearing Blue & Gold, and cranking Mony Mony. Now, if I could only figure out how to get the rodeo team to do the runout before my pallbearers.

I’ve sent recorded videos of the chant to some of my relatives and friends and most of them can’t even tell what’s being said.
