Kid and family wanted to be a Cat dang it!
Hammond? I’m guessing we just didn’t offer him.
Huge Cat family. Good luck to Dawson. He'll obviously have to grow into a FCS corner physically but arguably has the best ball skills of any corner in the state. Was also the fastest player at one of the camps this summer in Bozeman. Really good student too. Literally no reason not to offer him. This is a miss in my book.
Judging by the corners it’s been getting, MSU probably has other corners higher on their board. I have no idea how it works but MSU has had good luck getting out of state corners recently and has a bunch of young corners on the roster. Kory Boyd is third string and he’s really good. Montana high schools don’t produce a lot of corners. I would say that position is the most difficult to succeed in D1 for Montana players.
I understand why MSU wouldn't offer...but at the same time I don't because to me Dawson is a pretty safe investment at a relatively low cost who will likely earn academic scholarship money anyway. JJ Dolan was an undersized player from Missoula who didn't have Dawson's speed but is now a starting caliber Big Sky safety. Dawson could also compete at receiver but he's good enough to play corner. I really don't care about what Montana has produced in the past at a certain position. If you see it, you recruit it. I mostly just don't like losing recruits to the rival school when you know the kid wanted to come here. Seems like a layup and to me it's a missed one.

now to keep them from entering the portal.
Polidore and Powdrell both portaled and we’re better now. I’d love to keep them all here, don’t get me wrong, but if we have a rep for getting dbs to the FBS and they keep coming here that’s fine by me.

I agree with you, but to play the devils advocate, they're not going to have a lot of scholarship spots available for this class and they likely didn't have one to give one to him. I wish they did, I always want to see good Montana players on the team, but at the same time, I think the staff has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to recruiting. If he was willing to walk-on, well, then that's a whole different story I think. Unfortunately for the kid, WR & CB are two spots where they're really young and have plenty of players already.

By opting in to the house settlement, aren't we now allowed to offer more scholarships, or are we still capped?

The Big Sky Conference has all teams capped at 63.

I think the House Settlement has to do with roster size trimming it down to 95 players?

To a certain extent it really doesn’t matter. This is a small senior class, and while there can be more scholarships, the roster spots are limited to a set amount and there’s only so much money to spread around.

Kids usually post offers ieven if preferred walk on. Doesn't look like he got that from Cats even though he seemed to post a lot of correspondence from both Cats and Griz. Is there a chance they would have or still may offer walk on before signing day. I would think every school pressures you to commit as early as possible hoping to discourage other schools.

And in this age of NIL, teams can get non-scholarship players money in other ways to help them pay for school.

Yes, but I wouldn’t recommend that route if you want to keep the best players here. There’s only so much money to spread around.

Head scratcher! Maybe it’s an academic decision or personal one.
Not sure why we wouldn’t give some sort of offer. Maybe we did and you got a better one
