Re: OL Grades - 2025 SDSU
Last year ndsu had 275 and 328 in total offense vs SDSU. Thats not say MSU’s OL is playing great. Both games in Fargo.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

This is truly appreciate Vim. Appreciate the breakdown to help us understand a bit of the complexity of the o-line.

Re: OL Grades - 2025 SDSU
I wish I could do an All-22 look so I can show you guys things I see. They aren't as far away as it seems...the level of competition has been crazy for a new unit to get tested by this early on. Not sure that 2022 offensive line would've faired any better when they were new on the scene. They got to figure things out against McNeese State and Morehead State before performing really well at Oregon State. Its also crazy JT was part of that line as well.
For example, I thought Cedric Jefferson had a terrible game on Saturday and it turned out we probably wouldn't have been very successful on offense without him. Was told Braden Zimmer's pass pro is crazy for how young he is in his development as an OT dating back to when he played the position in high school and that wasn't a lie...he's crazy talented at pass pro. Everyone crapped on Everett Carr all week and he definitely struggled...but then I saw a kid suck it up and perform better in the second half. I saw a player in Titan Fleischmann who is definitely playing out of position and could blame that for his struggles but instead he keeps lining up every play looking for work. And then there is JT Reed...who just keeps plugging away despite adversity every year of his college career.

Re: OL Grades - 2025 SDSU
Thanks so much for this detailed write-up. Amazing to get an informed opinion so that I can begin to understand all of the stuff I don't know.
I still feel good about this team, though Lamson's pocket presence vs SDSU was not great and I didn't feel our playcalling did us any favors.
But we are likely going to "get well" over the next few games and build some confidence. We've played two really good teams-- likely far better than anyone else on our schedule. We were "almost there" vs. SDSU and just need to keep improving over the rest of the year to be very much in the mix.

When he had a bad pocket, he arguably played better. When we had clean pockets, our passing production was poor. Hopefully that gets cleaned up.Travelingcat wrote: ↑Fri Sep 12, 2025 5:21 pmThanks so much for this detailed write-up. No and thats why my grades are more broad when I do them because I'm only getting a side perspective. I can pick up most of it though.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Fri Sep 12, 2025 9:20 pmWait…do you have access to their all-22??VimSince03 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 12, 2025 5:16 pmI wish I could do an All-22 look so I can show you guys things I see. Rush stats last 7 FCS games (all playoff teams/6 top 10). Last year's opponent's yards per carry allowed in ( ).
SDSU 5.0 42-210 (3.1) +1.9
NDSU 5.4 37-198 (4.0) +1.4
USD 4.4 50-222 (3.3) +1.1
Idaho 5.3 53-283 (3.8') +1.5
UTM 6.1 33-201 (3.5) +2.6
UM 6.3 52-326 (3.9) +2.4
UCD 4.5 35-159 (3.7) +0.8
302-1599 5.3
SDSU's +/- of 1.9 is the third best in the group.

There hasn’t been much discussion of Mastel and his timeline of injury. I saw him dressed with a huge club on his hand last week. Could he have played? Upon his return what does the line look like?

I feel like they have to find a way to keep Jefferson and Zimmer on the field. I think Carr might become the odd man out.94VegasCat wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 7:20 amThere hasn’t been much discussion of Mastel and his timeline of injury. I’m sure he could have played, but he isn’t playing center with that club.94VegasCat wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 7:20 amThere hasn’t been much discussion of Mastel and his timeline of injury. Re: OL Grades - 2025 SDSU
It would be incredibly difficult to play any OL position without the full use of one hand. I can’t imagine he’s playing until the cast is off.catzz wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 9:42 amI’m sure he could have played, but he isn’t playing center with that club.94VegasCat wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 7:20 amThere hasn’t been much discussion of Mastel and his timeline of injury. I think you're probably right but I'm not so sure this isn't the better option, because it's putting the best player back at his natural position as well. Idk. I'm kind of torn about it.technoCat wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 8:40 amI feel like they have to find a way to keep Jefferson and Zimmer on the field. The group is doing good. I’m not calling anyone out or complaining but just wonder if there’s better combinations when Mastel is back.GoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 11:25 amI think you're probably right but I'm not so sure this isn't the better option, because it's putting the best player back at his natural position as well. My personal opinion is that they should do whatever they need to do to get Titan back at RT.94VegasCat wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 7:07 pmThe group is doing good. Re: OL Grades - 2025 SDSU
The OL generated 5.3 ypc but most of that was Davis, who was over 10. Lamson would've been around 6.0 were it not for a big sack. USD came in at 3.4 ypc, so this is 1.9 over that.
I kind of expect MSU to be around 5.5 ypc this year. I don't see that as any fault of the OL. Mostly it's due to Mellott being gone. He required a lot of attention from opponents and that freed RBs up a bit. I think this is a good thing though because now the OL has to be more diverse in what they do, and they seem to be doing just that.
Despite the strength of schedule MSU is third in pass efficiency in the BSC and just 3.1 out of first place at 145.2. The completion percentage is off the charts at 76%, which is 10% higher than the second best in the league. Both those numbers are against much tougher competition.
MSU had a good passing game last year in terms of completion pct and efficiency. However, it's a more important stat this year considering how much more balanced the offense is.
