Good, bad, and ugly Oregon edition

Post by Prodigal Cat » Sat Aug 30, 2025 6:34 pm

Good:
Lamson. When he had time he seemed to be in control of the offense. Threw the ball accurately and made good decisions.
Taco. Cats best player today.
Sansted. 2-2 in FGs with a long of 42. 1-1 on extra points. If we need a kick I have confidence in this kid.

Bad:
Tackling. Broken tackles are one thing but when you see players trying to deliver ‘the big hit’ and not wrapping up that’s form. If they were sliding off guys trying to wrap up that’s understandable. They were trying hit in the open field.

Ugly:
Procedure penalties. False starts and even worse illegal formation penalties. Oregon is good but it shouldn’t affect your ability to get lined up.
Obviously I wanted to come out and compete. This wasn’t competitive at all.

On to the next.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

There were a few missed tackles but nothing out of the ordinary. I rewatched the game and watched for this. I think people see missed tackles liked they see basketball players not boxing out. If the other team gets an offensive rebound they scream “box out!” even though the ball just bounced right to the opposing player.

Some missed tackles are broken tackles. Players go in and make a great effort to just close but aren’t able to get into good enough position despite that effort and the attempt is broken. Receivers are accused of dropping passes then they make a great effort to get to but the ball is too hot or they hit the ground so hard it’s impossible to hang to. But hE gOT a HaNd on IT, sO He sHOuld’Ve caUgHT it!

How many missed tackles were a player making contact with no wrap up and Oregon player broke free and got more yards with another Cat player having to make the tackle. Those are missed tackles and it seems we had more than normal.

Seemed to get rolled back several times. Guessing ankle sprain. Once he came up limping in Second half he should not have been put back in.

The Good: We can pass over the middle 😎

Bad: a few alignment penalties.

Ugly: scheduling this game 8 years ago when we probably desperately needed the money. NEVER AGAIN!

My Mother-in-law bad: High-Line Bobcat cheering on failures (or lack there of) of players while the Cats are still on the field against a team that has a 23 million dollar NIL for the year and should finish inside the top 4 of the FBS.

I think people have the play in the first half (first score?) burned into their brains. That was a bad attempt. He went too high. It was a spectacular play and showed the strength of their stud TE, too. The second half had a few more misses but every team does that when they’re getting thumped. If you get a chance watch it again.

MSU had some great tackles. Oregon’s QB was very complimentary.

It’ll be interesting to see what Vigen says after watching the film. He usually comments on the previous games on Mondays.

Postgame presser he didn’t say anything and he seemed all smiles. It’s rare that an injured player goes to postgame presser. But you never know.

The good: I thought our qb play was really pretty solid
Kid from great falls played solid at LB
I think the secondary will be ok vs FCS
FGs !!

The bad: injuries and penalties

The ugly: playing these stupid overmatched games.

Tackling is a technique. The result of the play doesn’t change that. There were plenty of plays where the Bobcat made the tackle by launching without wrapping up. There’s a reason players do it. It does not change the fact that the form is bad. It’s like blocking on the O-line, people don’t notice the bad form until it affects the play. They see the player go down and think “good tackle” even though it wasn’t a great form tackle. Championship teams tackle well, tackle consistently, and tackle with good form. Cats missed some tackles today because they were not doing those. Even when they made plays they still didn’t have good form consistently. They need to be better at that to be a national title contender.

Good: Lamson. Very impressed by him today. Kicking game was very good as well.

Bad: a couple bad arm tackles, and PENALTIES.

Ugly: playing these spoiled brat ducks for a measly $650k (or whatever it is) when they have players who make more than that in NIL.

Go too high you get ran over, to low you get hurdled. Good stuff for the film room for someone.. 😬
