I have questions.

1. Are they FCS playoff eligible. My understanding is that once a team publicly declares their intent to move to FBS, they are no longer eligible for playoffs due to the recruiting advantages they may have over other FCS teams.

2. What is their current scholarship level. The BSC has said the would join the House Settlement but would stay at 63 scholarships. My understanding is that they are over that they would be in violation of BSC limits and should not be eligible for BSC Championship.

3. Have they notified the BSC of intent to leave and paid any penalties for leaving.

I am just not sure what their status is, I think they are kind of in limbo here.

nothing happens until they are accepted as fbs indi. after they get the yes, not eligible for playoffs by fcs.

still the same

not yet

I think their football program will go the way of so many California public universities. Long Beach State, Cal Stae Fullerton and so many others used to have football and don't anymore. Sac State will be the same.

The Big West makes a ton of sense for them geographically speaking given that by the time they join the membership of the conference will be entirely within the state of California. I'm sure it's a lot less expensive to make your road trips from Sacramento to southern California than it is to travel to all the Big Sky cities. If they're going to be an FCS Independent in 2026 they might set the record for outgoing transfer portal players after this season. The Big Sky football schedule will need some adjusting as well, MSU was scheduled to play in Sacramento in 2026 and host them in 2027. Maybe there's a team out there (Utah Tech?) that can come in and fill their spot fairly cleanly.

Utah Tech is going to want to do more than fill their spot on the schedule.
The Big West does not feature football in its conference sports, and Sac State's announcement did not mention football. However, multiple reports Tuesday night said Sac State plans to play next season as an FCS independent.
I imagine Sac is going to want to keep as many BSC opponents as possible for the 2026 season once they realize that not many teams (FBS or FCS) are dying to schedule an FCS Independent. Hopefully the BSC unanimously decides to tell them to pound some California sand.

Agreed, I was referring to Utah Tech taking Sac's spot in the conference and not just on the football schedule. But if UTU (for example) is added starting in 2026 the conference could just swap them into Sac State's original schedule for the first couple years so that it doesn't affect other previously scheduled games.
