Came away very impressed with Jabez Woods, imagine we’ll see more of him.
Jared White, Colson Coon, Seth Brock and Braden Zimmer also stood out to me.
I wish I would've tracked Woods closer Saturday. Not that he was hard to notice. He had 7 catches and most, if not all, of those were short, crossing routes, which MSU appears to be featuring this year. I'm wondering how many targets he had. He was a prolific receiver in high school. The number of catches he had (averaged around 9 receptions per game) tells me he's got great hands.
I think the toughness after the catch was the most noticeable part. Really wanted those extra yards.
He had a great day.
I went into the scrimmage thinking MSU may go 6’6”, 6’4”, 6’4” at times at WR this year. I’m now intrigued by a 6’0”, 5’11”, 5’9” set.

Woods looked damn good in the scrimmage. He welcomes and initiates hard contact. He also falls forward. Overall, I was extremely impressed with the team! Sterbick’s offense felt familiar and also new, some of the formations he was putting out on the field were definitely confusing our own defense.

What did you think about the off-platform/Mahomes passes?

Excited to hear that maybe MSU will be involving the WRs in the passing game more this year than they have in the past. "Run the damn ball" looks great when you're racking up 400 yards against Northern Colorado and Portland State but I feel like MSU has struggled to adjust a bit when they've finally come up against a team who they couldn't just run against at will.

I wish I saw the prior scrimmage, as I felt it would be able to get a better sense of their capabilities with more contact. At times I felt they were even more rushed with the off-platform throws as they wanted the ball out prior to a sack being called.
Duchien throws a great ball, and especially at the beginning of the scrimmage he was on point. Wilson I think performs a better throw off-platform but not by much. Same thing that happened to Wilson in the scrimmage happened to him in a number of passing opportunities in the 2024 season, he throws a ball without his feet quite set, the ball is a bullet right to the target and its just straight up dropped. Maybe the receivers aren’t expecting it as that would have been a time Tommy scrambled to get a better passing position or just tucks and run. Wilson did have a few deep passes that were reminiscent of playing 500 at recess.

I think the wobbler that Trimble got away from the db was a case of being a little too confident. I watched him from snap to throw because he looked and probably was feeling pretty good about the previous drive. He looked great from the snap to his drop to setting his feet and then it went haywire. I’m not sure if he lost focus or was caught off guard by how open Trimble was.
Duchien looked really good and had it not been for two bad drops he has a big day. He’s 18-22-1 150 instead of 16-22-2 132.
They both looked good throwing off-platform to my untrained eye. I didn’t even know what that was until I saw all three doing it during drills.

Who do we have to replace a healthy Ty McCulloch as a multiple threat? We have taco, but he can only carry so much of a load.

Started vs UNM and helped generate the fourth most yards in the season vs Lobos. Only Wyoming, Hawaii and Arizona had more.

We maintain possession on the two fumbles probably would’ve been the most yards against New Mexico this year if I saw the correct numbers

Has anybody made a projection of the offensive lineman starters and too deep for fall? Seems like I might’ve seen it here somewhere and missed it.

Yes, I believe Vim had something on that. Looking like Jefferson, Mastel, battle at C, Reed, Titan. Lots of good battles for 2s and I wouldn’t be surprised if a starting spot or two isn’t highly contested. There are a boatload of good OL players.

My best guess:
LT: Jefferson/Zimmer
LG: Rollins/Nyland or Luhmann
C: Reed/Nilson or Kaplan
RG: Mastel/Carr
RT: Fleischmann/Ezekial or Noble
We also have a ridiculously talented freshman class coming in. Zimmer could've been viewed as one of the biggest risers of spring. I think Reed will be our center but Nilson, Kaplan, or Nyland all could have a shot. Even Burke was getting pushed into trying out at that spot though I think he helps us the most as a power guard. Rollins is going to start at one of the guard spots. Our tackles are set. Everett Carr also had a really good spring and is a flexible player. Ezekial has guard and tackle flexibility as well. Dalton Noble may be our next RT when Titan graduates. The MSU offensive line is looking great once again.

13. Not one that isn’t capable of starting. I remember not having enough to fill all five spots during camp.

Running back I think we are in good shape. Maybe could use one more transfer unless an incoming freshman can fit the bill.

13 good OL competing for five spots. I don’t know what it’s like at other places but that seems like an enviable situation.

I have no guesses at the offensive line other than the two deep that have been suggested by quite a few. I’ve been to a couple of practices and that’s been about it.
