NDSU has had starting S, Wisniewski out all year, and he probably won't be back. Have an OL who went down before the CO game and hasn't returned. All-American DE Hendricks injured his knee last Saturday and is out indefinitely. Cam Miller has a bad ankle.

SDSU has had a safety out since September, injuries on both lines as well.

Its not just us.

Who would any of you say has seen the most heart breaking season/career ending injury with the football team? No limits on time frame.

Preston Gale is in the top 3 I think. But I can only reference 2000ish to present time.

I remember everybody had big things expected for him after his freshman season. He missed his entire sophomore year due to knee injury in the preseason. His Junior year, he was impressive playing in the same group as Daly and Schreibeis. He hurt his knee in scrimmage fall camp his senior season and made it back sometime in the second half of the season to end his time here. He was a big quick dude.

I think it was Evan Groves that got injured on an interception that was called back(kinda like Danny U) and just never really came back after that. Thought that guy was going to be an all-timer...

Evin Groves was a tailback — and a very explosive runner. His career ended way too soon. Was it an ankle injury / surgery that just wouldn’t heal?

Yes I know, I think he was injured on an interception return and then the play was negated for a penalty or something.

Brad Smith was one who was the heir apparent to Dane Fletcher at DE who had all the promise of being incredible. Unfortunately his career was cut short. We had Schreibeis and Brad Daly after that, but Smith looked like he could be the next Dane.

If Brad Smith stayed healthy, he would’ve been better than Dane. I knew quite a few of the players back then, they all said Smith was one of the meanest and most athletic players they’ve been around.

Shannon Blixt. Linebacker. Bad automobile accident before he set foot on campus. Went on to have a very successful rodeo (bulldogging) career.

Tony Strainer. Blew knee in one of his first practices. AA all state at center and middle linebacker.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Man, I remember Strainer. I didn't know he blew out his knee at MSU. I always wondered why he didn't play at MSU after High School.

Yep, Evin Groves is my vote. He was a really good RB before injuries derailed his career. Will never forget how he almost single handedly won Cat/gris 2005 in a sloppy mudfest behind a banged up Travis Lulay...

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Okay, thanks for clarifying. I don’t remember how he was injured, but I agree with you that, in my mind, Evin Groves had the best potential career derailed very early by injury.

Evin absolutely had the ability to be the best RB ever at MSU. His muddy Cat/Griz game will always be one of my favorite rivalry performances. He played his ass off and had a brilliant game.

Jase Muri would have have been an amazing Slot Receiver for the Cats, but a near fatal traffic accident ended that dream before he could even get here…

They’re all really bad and none of them out rank the other. It’s the worst thing about sports. Some players get hurt in little league and never play again. It just sucks and can be incredibly depressing.

On a more positive note, you really gotta love the talk about Schmidt, Uluilakepa and Dowler making the PSU trip to help coach up the players at their positions. Uplifting to hear about their ability to rise above their own misfortune and be selfless for their teammates and their team. Very motivating.

This team needs Danny on the sideline as much as they need him on the field.

That’s a great observation and I get what you’re saying.

It’s going to be great for O’Reilly just having him there. Uluilakepa knows him better than anyone and knows how much is too much etc.

He’s good in general for the whole team to have around. Just his presence.

I knew I heard his name around town recently. Looks like he owns and runs the Billings Hotel & Convention Center.
