Italy > France

Well, the World Cup has finally come to an end. I only say "finally" because we (the U.S.) can't buy a game in it. Anyway, Italy beat France 5-3 on penalty kicks to win the World Cup. Good to see France lost.

I'm tempted to head to North Beach ("Little Italy" part of SF) tonight ... they are probably partying in the streets.

That would be a fun time. Nothing like that goes on in Montana unless it's St. Patrick's day or something.

Even in my neighborhood (which is Asian if it is really anything), people were packed into every bar and watching through the windows during the last Italy game. When the winning goal was scored in overtime (or whatever they call it), the whole street filled up with cheers and groans. I still don't really "get" the game, but it does make it fun to pay attention to when so many people around me are so passionate about it.

I 'spose I was pulling for Italy-at least the USA can say we tied the world champs. The difference between them and us-they don't lose to Ghana!

The next tournament is scheduled for South Africa in 2010, but word is South Africa may not be able to pull it off and the tourney could be moved to somewhere else-like the USA. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Didn't make it to North Beach, but was told that they had the main street shut down for the partiers. This article and the photos makes it look like quite a crowd:

It would be cool to care this much about soccer ... maybe by next time I will be there.

Complaint about ABC/ESPN France vs. Italy coverage:

Not once did I hear the word "Freedom" substituted for "France".
