Re: All Bobcat RB & WR nominations
Please go easy on me, I'm a younger fan and only started really watching the cats in 2004-2005, but been a fan since 1998. Definite recency bias since I never saw the older players play
My running back nominees:
Cody Kirk, Isaiah Ifanse, Don Hass, Ryan Johnson, Orenzo Davis
My wide receiver nominees:
Kevin Kassis, Lance McCutcheon, Tanner Bleskin, Corey Smith, Elvis Akpla, Scott Turnquist
I wanted to include Eddie Sullivan and Ricky Gatewood but I feel like their brushes with the law kind of taint their "candidacy"

The best WR had to be Sam McCullum.

Re: All Bobcat RB & WR nominations
I'm surprised Michael Jefferson is never mention for WR. I would vote Junior Adams or Bleskin.
Rb is hard. So many greats but Ryan Johnson and Don Hass top it for me. If Ifanse has a great senior season, I'll give it to him.

Honorable Mentions: Rob Tesch, Eric Hopkins, Kevin Kassis, Scott Turnquist, Mike Jefferson, Tom White, Kelly Davis
RB
1) Don Hass - only played three seasons and still amassed 2954 career rushing yards; his 1460 yards in 1966 has only been broken twice (Ryan Johnson in 2001 and Ifanse in 2021); his 29 career rushing tds wasn't broken until Cody Kirk came along; number is retired
2) Ryan Johnson - carried the team on his back in so many ways; still holds the all-time rushing mark though Ifanse is within 200 yards of it; his 2001 season was special
3) Isaiah Ifanse - he'll probably be considered the best by the time the dust settles
WR
The WR records are so odd to me. So many great ones who amassed yards under run-focused head coaches. You have groups to choose from. Bleskin and Akpla were the Denarius receivers and are at the top of the career records. Herbert got two years of Dakota then a mix of Bruggman, Murray, and Troy and likely would've eclipsed 3,000 in a standard passing offense. Junior Adams and Scott Turnquist are Lulay's guys and each have Top 10 spots in either career or season records. Chip Hobbs squeezed out 2,000 career yards for Hysell teams that ran the rock. 90s counterpart Eric Hopkins still holds the record for most 100yard receiving games in a season. Jefferson was a wonderful transfer and who could forget that Colorado game. Tom White is a playoff hero in the 80s while Kelly Davis has the most receiving touchdowns as both were Kelly Bradley receivers. Sam McCullum was a draft pick and still holds the single season touchdown mark for a receiver. Kevin Kassis and Lance McCutcheon were on teams that featured arguably the best rushing attacks MSU has ever had while throwing out the worst passing attacks. The fact Kassis got the yards he did proves just how good he was while Lance bloomed much like his senior season of high school into an All-Conference star. Ron Bain's single season receiving mark has only been broken three times. Rob Tesch played three years for Earle Solomonson but still is #5 on the career receiving yards chart.
1) Elvis Akpla - I just feel like he had the ability to do it all; arguably the best talent we've ever had at WR
2) Tanner Bleskin - You can't argue with his production since he's currently #1 by 600 career receiving yards; Tanner was also a punishing run blocker
3) Sam McCullum - some could argue he should be #1 and they have a case; NFL draft pick and played 10 seasons; inducted into the MT Football HOF in 2018

One minor correction, Troy was a freshman Herbert’s senior year. Imagine Herbert in a EWU offense.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 11:32 amIf I had to rank a Top 3 for each:VimSince03 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 11:01 amRB Nominations:

Herbert made some of the most amazing catches I have ever seen. Fully extended or with just one hand on some of them. His body control was amazing.AFCAT wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 12:14 pmOne minor correction, Troy was a freshman Herbert’s senior year. And Arie Grey played three years for Solmonson and one year for Hysell. He was undersized but played all four years. He was named team captain and led the team in all purpose yardage his senior season. I think he was the last guy to both run track and play football at the same time.
Rob Tesch probably could have played as a safety. I loved his toughness at wide receiver and as a return specialist.

You are correct about the coaches! I had the wrong transition, but was thinking about the lack of offensive opportunities for Arie. But I don’t think there has been another athlete that has done both. Possibly the kid from Great Falls, Chris ?,, but I am not sure if he ever made the football team. And the only reason I know that is because it was mentioned in a Bobcat football media info this year.

Hmmm....Interesting, I was thinking Chris Wilson as well, but you might be right on that. I remember Lamont Bell being a sprinter and Shaun Ross throwing, but they are likely the same age as Arie....Shaun Ross may have been one year behind, as I think he took a redshirt and arie did not?Cataholic wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 3:02 pmYou are correct about the coaches!
3) Sam McCullum - some could argue he should be #1 and they have a case; NFL draft pick and played 10 seasons; inducted into the MT Football HOF in 2018
Also, I'm pretty sure we've had more football players compete in track since Arie.
But I don’t think there has been another athlete that has done both. Possibly the kid from Great Falls, Chris ?,, but I am not sure if he ever made the football team. And the only reason I know that is because it was mentioned in a Bobcat football media info this year.

I kind of remember some discussion on him running with the track team the during the indoor season. But I think it was “part time” to fill for injuries or extra conditioning, something out of the ordinary…. But I am getting older and my memory plays tricks on me.wbtfg wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 3:18 pmAlso, I'm pretty sure I remember Joey Thomas running the sprints in indoor track.Cataholic wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 3:02 pmYou are correct about the coaches! Re: All Bobcat RB & WR nominations
Choate had a recruit that played football (I wanna say he was a LB but Choate and staff may have converted him to DB) and ran track. There was a big debate on here at the time because the recruit would lose weight so he could run sprints and then have to bulk back up for football season. He was a transfer and I don't think he played much other than special teams, but I know he did both. I just don't remember his name.Cataholic wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 8:17 pmI kind of remember some discussion on him running with the track team the during the indoor season. Re: Bobcat football players who also ran track, I took the rather unorthodox approach of actually looking through the T&F rosters on MSU's website. The last to do both was Justin Paige in 2017 unless there was a football name I didn't recognize after him.

For goodness sake it's IFANSE. There is only one N in his name and it's at the end, not at the beginning.catsandcanes wrote: ↑Sat Jul 16, 2022 8:15 pmWR1. Herbert
