I guess in retrospect, Choate has never been anywhere longer than six years, so this is spot on. The five years at MSU is the second longest stay he has been anywhere since he left Western. I hope MSU does do a nationwide search though but anyone they hire better have some sort of Montana connections and understand the rivalry.

We have the luxury of having some very well informed posters on this board that are accurate 95% of the time. We eat up what they say and it is almost always true. Choate (and possibly Ioane) pull a 180 and make a decision contrary to popular belief and we chastise these informed posters? I still appreciate the hell out of these “in the know” posters.

Many of us have connections and try to share where we can appropriately. I’m saying we all need to be very careful about making guarantees. When someone guarantees something, like they got it straight from the coach himself, then it looks really really bad when that turns out false. That is what happened here. Like I said, I’m probably just venting and pissy.RobertCats wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 10:41 pmWe have the luxury of having some very well informed posters on this board that are accurate 95% of the time. Anyone getting mad at guarantee’s that a poster makes on a forum (regardless of how good their info usually is) really needs to step away from the keyboard for a bit anyway.

Gained valuable head coaching experience, and a darn good job of it, too. Really sad to see him go. We were cheated out of what likely would have been his most successful season at MSU in 2020 due to some stupid bat-eating Chinese... Yeah it's changed a whole bunch, some for the better and some for the worse in my opinion. I had a friend who grew up in Bozeman in the late thirties and lived there his entire life, he would tell you that at least once a decade and more likely once a year the old timers and originals would lament that the town was changing and not always for the better. So when you guys showed up in town and for the time you were there, like it or not someone probably thought you were a transplant ruining the town they once knew.grizzh8r wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 10:21 pmDon't forget CO and VT, two more yuppie, liberal breeding grounds. Lot of frustration being vented here. I am frustrated as well but choose to take a more optimistic view. Choate did a fantastic job here (4-0 is the bottom line for me) and has set up a good program. He deserves a ton of credit for that. If he is leaving, he must have good reasons and I wish him well. Whoever we hire will inherit a program with a solid foundation. I look forward to welcoming the new coach to the family and will hope for the best. Go Cats.

From the sounds of this article, looks like Coach will get the co-DC title, which I would assume would come with nice pay bump. Makes more sense of the move rather than just going to Texas to be the LB coach:

Also sounds like Coach Sark wanted Bob Stoops for this spot, but that didn't fly with many in Texas.Camo_Cat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 11:18 pmFrom the sounds of this article, looks like Coach will get the co-DC title, which I would assume would come with nice pay bump. Re: Choate to Texas - Co-DC - Inside LB Coach - Confirmed
So, here’s some details.
This got leaked early on the Texas side, before Choate was able to talk to all of the players. He’s obviously not very pleased about that, but people love to be the “first” to get the information out.
Choate loved his time at MSU. So why is he moving on? He wants to be an FBS HC. After the Boise search, he seemed to realize that FCS to FBS HC hires are not that common/frequent. So he became more open to the idea of a DC job at a major P5 school.
He did not approach this job, they approached him. Kwiatkoski is close with Choate, after Mike Stoops fell through he convinced Sark on Choate.
At the end of the day, I get why Choate is leaving. He’s making the better career choice. I feel bad for him that it got leaked out before he could talk to his players. I think all of us, when we look back and reflect, know that he cares a ton about these players. Good luck to Choate in Texas.

Re: Choate to Texas - Co-DC - Inside LB Coach - Confirmed
Well, I have always felt that if a player or a coach does not want to be at Montana State, then I am happy to see them go. I really don't want to have a coach continue leading Montana State who obviously no longer wants to be here. The reason WHY Choate wants to leave really doesn't matter. So Coach, good luck. I think you are heading to a sorry ass job, but that's just my opinion about the situation at the U. of Texas compared to what you had here. Instead of being the big fish in the little pond and the head guy, you are now going to be a tiny fish in an ocean and hardly anyone will know who the hell you are. MSU and SW Montana are growing; I'm not sure what you are going to find at Texas under their new coach.
As for all of the moaning and groaning, yes I would feel that way if something bad had happened to Choate, like a disease, where he could no longer coach. But hell he wants outta here, so let him go. I have to look at the times NDSU was on top and their coach moved up to FBS, but NDSU just kept on winning. Choate lost 22 games in four years and the last game he coached, he had his tail handed to him, 14-42. So it's not like a miracle was performed. Maybe we make too much out of beating UM four straight years, since they haven't exactly been world beaters. I have said before that Montana State is clearly on the ascent in every way while UM is in decline. Some of that is because of the academic programs featured at UM vs. MSU. Montana State right now is a fantastic head coaching opportunity. It is now a matter of finding the right guy. At least the timing is good for making an excellent hire. Go Cats!

Re: Choate to Texas - LB Coach - Confirmed
Not likely. Both hi-line and I are from small town rural montana. I grew up a lot closer to BZN than he likely did (my optometrist and dentist trips always required a drive over the pass to Bozeman). Frontier Pies used to be THE PLACE to go after Bobcat basketball games, I still remember how good their baked lasagna and chile and cornbread were. North 19th was a two lane road, as was Huffine. Used to drop a load of full cows off at the stockyards and grab a bite to eat at the Stockyard Cafe. Used to be 2 western wear stores downtown. The CNFR was the highlight of spring for me. All of that has since changed, and that's just since the mid 90's.Joe Bobcat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 10:56 pmYeah it's changed a whole bunch, some for the better and some for the worse in my opinion. If the decision is solely based on salary, then I can understand his move. But no way do I think this puts him in a better position to move to a HC job in FBS.grizzh8r wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 12:09 amThanks 99, not at all surprised the news broke/leaked before he could tell the team, it's a product of the Twitter age and instant gratification that comes from our hyper connected lives.bobcat99 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 11:55 pmSo, here’s some details.
