Not all of us had him as #1. We may in fact get the very person we've needed all along in Cooper Jones!PapaG wrote:Seems as if we dodged a bullet on this one, which is kind of a scary thought considering how sold everyone from Cruzado down to us fans were with the initial hire and Brennan's vision for improving facilities.Go Scats Go wrote:Did not see it... Great observation. It's unfortunate that Brennan handled things they way he did (which he will most likely have to address at some point in his future), but if the fit isn't there - better for both parties to move on.MSU01 wrote:
The one thing that is definitely true is that it's much better for Brennan to back out now, as opposed to coming to MSU for a year or two and do a half-assed job knowing that his heart isn't in it, and then bailing and leaving MSU in an even worse situation.
A couple other tidbits:
-MSU is not required to reopen the search and can hire from anyone in the pool if they desire. That doesn't mean it is the best move, but that's the policy. I personally had Jones hirer on my list.
-Housing in Bozeman IS a truly out of whack right now (as I'm in the midst of selling and buying). Prices were high two years ago when I bought in Bozeman and we just sold for 15% higher then when we bought - we can't afford the house we just sold. Houses are sold before they are listed and nothing in an affordable range is on the market for more than a week. If you are dealing with real estate in Bozeman right now, you understand. However, I don't expect that is the sole reason.
-I'm not sure how someone discovered who the #2 candidate is/was. I'm fairly sure, after attending MSU HR training today, that there are confidentiality requirements. Even then, with the process I'm not sure who you could realistically ask who was second on the list.
Next man up...

I agree with you that this does not look good on Brennan. He may of shot himself in the foot on this and is now destined to stay a #2 for quite some time because of it. For good reason...he wasn't ready!!!MSU Toddler wrote:Great observation. I would think that the other candidates would still be pretty interested in the job. The opportunity to become an AD at a Division I program doesn't come around all that often and if that's what you're yearning for you should probably take the offer if it's available.

Exactly how I feel on the situation. Those other four candidates have likely had an interesting morning/24 hours.tampa_griz wrote:I would think that the other candidates would still be pretty interested in the job. You don't find the physical and mental well being of your a child a valid excuse? And listing only a couple of your concerns on why you decided it wasn't a good fit and not saying "My son kind of made the decision easy as we need to stay close medically for him" would be ok to say? That's like in a divorce when your kids think it's their fault. Same kind of thing, You don't want to put that in their head. He wasn't lying, he clearly didn't want to say everything outright.Hi-Line Bobcat wrote:I did read it and maybe I should have elaborated, I guess I don't find that a valid excuse so I didn't put it in my post. In my own experience, my dad turned down two prominent jobs in Billings while I was in middle school and then once in high school. He turned them down so me and my brother could finish school with the people we have always known. I never felt blame or any responsibility for him turning down the jobs. I never had cancer, neither did my brother, but in my opinion I don't put much weight on that.BleedingBLue wrote:Did you not read what iaafan just said? " He may not have wanted to say that because he doesn't want his son to know he's the reason he turned it down. Those kinds of things can have a bad effect on a youngster, especially considering what he's going through."Hi-Line Bobcat wrote:Then why wouldn't he come out and say that it's because of his kid? That would be a hell of lot more credible than, his BS housing excuse. I wouldn't find as much fault if that was the actual reason. But still, as VIM said, he knows about his kid's health and his wife's opinion, so he should have been more upfront with that if it was such a big deal. That's on him, not Waded, because I'm sure they asked him if he was all in before he accepted the job.iaafan wrote:Keep in mind that Brennan was the last minute candidate. He's the one that Dennis Erickson recommended. I don't think the housing situation or the schools is the real reason why he bailed. I think it was a family decision. Keep in mind his son has cancer and the Huntsman Cancer hospital is right there in Utah. His son could've relapsed or his wife could've had a change of heart due to the son's situation. He may not have wanted to say that because he doesn't want his son to know he's the reason he turned it down. Those kinds of things can have a bad effect on a youngster, especially considering what he's going through.
I'm sure Costello will take the job if he's offered.
If that is his reason, then why hurt your own career and potential at making good money that will help support your sick child by lying?

I think you don't get it. Sleeping in until 6 won't get many people very far in life, especially if they want to play on Sunday.

Re: Kyle Brennan Bails on MSU
The other issue not being discussed here is why Utah would take him back? If an employee leaves for another job, and then decides the grass was greener where he was at previously, why would you want that employee back. He's already shown willingness to leave once, so there'd be no doubt he'd certainly look to leave again in the future. It's the reverse situation MSU is in, but with the same logic - if you don't want to be, we don't want you here. I'm just more amazed Utah took him back. Oh well, live goes on. MSU will be fine, and I'm sure he'll be fine.

Maybe I am unclear.
Did Brennan have a sick child and a wife with a job at U of U before he accepted the job!
He lacks leadership skills, presence, and the ability to know his market.
Others were better to begin with IMO.

It baffles me that people can afford Bozeman right now. Especially recent graduates.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

I think this just goes to show us how little we actually know about these candidates. I am less concerned about whether someone has "fundraising experience" or "facility enhancements" on his/her resume. I want someone who sees the value in this institution and state, a person who WANTS to be a part of something bigger than themselves, not someone who just wants to be an AD for the sake of being one.

Re: Kyle Brennan Bails on MSU
I just did a Salt Lake County property search. The Brennan's 2015 taxable house value was $355,700. They live one lot off one of the busiest streets in Salt Lake City proper. They could have easily bought a house in Bozeman, in a nicer, quieter location. However, they might have bought it in 2013 for really cheap, like $220,000 if the records imply them buying it. Now that I look at it, they might own two homes, one worth $418K and one worth $355K. One could be a rental. One is under both names, one is only under the wife's name. FWIW.
