Not if he only had one year of eligibility left. If he has only one year, then he must be a graduate student. The no-penalty rule applies to athletes that have 2 or more years left.
Oh yeah, well, I mean, if you want to go by that rule. Then I guess so.
I forgot that part.

That changed in like 2007 or so? I think Jefferson was right around the last time you could drop down with only a year left.

Didn't we have a safety from UAB last year . . . Carter that dropped down for just his senior year . . .

Yes that was a special circumstance because UAB nixed their football program.

Well don't put a question mark after it and I won't assume you are uncertain.

After watching his hudl, a few thoughts.
He's definitely BIG, but his initial reaction and start is slow and he starts with a very high pad level. But his overall speed is decent for a guy over 3 bills and his strength more than makes up for slow starts.
Definitely run stopper type of DT, while I don't see him pushing the pocket against the pass, he's probably strong enough to hold a couple blocks to spring a linebacker. If you had enough time you could probably mold this kid into a really good nose tackle in a 3-4.

Some recruits take their time. Wait for a better offer. Look at Bozeman's own Payton O'Reilly this year. He still hasn't confirmed where he is going to school, even though it looks like Miami of Ohio at the moment. Regardless, instead of worrying about the why my fellow Viking fan, watch his highlight tape. The only thing maybe holding this kid back was his height. Other than that, it looks like we have a very good high school linebacker committed to our program. His footwork and instincts are outstanding and he is always around the ball. It also helps that Austin looks like a stereotypical middle linebacker. I want him on my side in a fight!

Plus the high school he went to is one of the best in the country . . . he will come to MSU fundamentally sound and well coached.

Pretty athletic based on his numbers from The Opening. Good lateral movements, really important for a LB.
Favorite part of the tape is the first play (I think) where he takes on a block, sheds it and tackles the back. So many HS players try to run around blocks, so it's good to see that. Good instincts. You can tell he has some issues seeing over the OL, but the instincts help with that. Like him at MLB...could be a 3 year starter IMO.
