Hard to win a game when you are shooting 33% from the field and... 7% form 3 point range while the other team is shooting 55% from the field and 61% from 3 point range

I can see getting your hopes up a little that the football team might crack into the great category on any given year, but I would advise not getting your hopes up for basketball, you know Huse is still the coach right?

The MSU men's basketball team eked out a close 55-54 win today over the Eastern Washington football team. #lookonthebrightside

Tough way to begin the season

I missed the first half...was it basically the same ol' same ol' with no flow or movement on offense at all leading to guards chucking up ill-advised shots? Looking at the low number of assists and horrible shooting percentages for the Cats I'm kind of guessing that's how it was.

Maybe Brad Huse and Jamie Marshall can get together for a coffee and discuss strategy.

UCR was 4-24 last year (in d1 games) and finished #337 (out of 347) in RPI. Not very good last year anyway. No idea about how good or bad they are yet this year.MSU01 wrote:Wow, UC Riverside must be TERRIBLE.wbtfg wrote:Bball team loses. 72-67
I'm kind of surprised honestly, I thought the Cats would pick up a win here. I see it was a rough day from 3 again

Guys who were good shooters in high school or junior college immediately become terrible when they get in Huse's system. Whatever he's doing doesn't work...but he keeps doing it year after year after year after year.Potomac Griz wrote:UCR was 4-24 last year (in d1 games) and finished #337 (out of 347) in RPI. Translation "We are trying to run slow down 1/2 court offence"
That would be great if we had 1/2 court players like Wentz and Holms in the starting line up, instead we have players like Dison, Bigalow, Davis, Coleman and Colbert who are at their best in the open court and creating not passing the ball around the perimeter hoping to get a wide open shot.
What ever happens this year is on Fields now

Re: Tanking against Cal State Fullerton
I try to watch every Cat BB game I can (unless it conflicts with a Griz game) and that pretty much sums up what I've seen. The Cats often seem to be a team that's built more for a pushing the tempo. Instead they are used in a slow 1/2 offense that "waits" for great shots. Then the "great shots" are not there so they take ****** forced shots or ill-advised 3s, and make just about anyone watching the game that's a fan wonder WTF?! Many many games over the past few years I've watched and the offense was often almost painful to watch.mslacat wrote:Huse: "We stress to our players not settle for average shots but wait for Great shots"

Reminds me a bit of what the coach of the Denver Nuggets is doing now.... He's taking the team Karl built that was built to push the tempo and decided to try to slow it down... Working great so far

Very glad the Griz have Tinkle who seems to like the idea of pushing the tempo when the Griz get a rebound or a steal, not slowing things down and "waiting" for a great shot to open up. He's big on keeping the offense moving and active if the Griz do end up in their 1/2 court offense though. You can frequently hear him reminding players to "MOVE MOVE MOVE!!" when they are slipping a bit offensively. Whenever the Griz get a rebound you can see him trying to get them to push the ball up the court fast and I think the players love that. When you have the speedy guards and athletes who can push the tempo and create offense it's obviously best to allow them to do that instead of slowing things down!
You'd think after many years of the same problems being very evident Huse might try to change some things up a bit... Is it stubbornness that prevents him from doing so or is it fear of mistakes and turnovers that keep him from pushing the tempo offensively?

Re: Tanking against Cal State Fullerton
This is a perfect translation for the Seattle U game I went to out here two years ago. When we ran and put our foot on the throttle we created wide open looks and got up on them by ten or more if my memory serves correctly. Then all of a sudden we stopped pushing the tempo and started setting up in 1/2 court offense sets. The air just went out the team and the lead evaporated within a few possessions. Ended up losing....Potomac Griz wrote:I try to watch every Cat BB game I can (unless it conflicts with a Griz game) and that pretty much sums up what I've seen. You need to be able to play the style of offense that best suits your team. If it's run and gun, you run and gun. If you're big and strong with great set up shooters than you can slow the game down and create open looks. But you have to be able to play SUPER physical down low and someone on the perimeter that can catch-shoot and convert a high percentage of three's.
Or conversely, you have to recruit to the style of game you want to play.
