MBB vs SUU

Post by Helcat72 » Thu Feb 28, 2013 8:56 pm

32-27 SUU at the half. Cats shooting about 25%, winning on the boards only one turnover. Missed two front ends of 1 and 1. I look for SUU to pull away in 2nd half. Both Chessman and Hier have foul trouble in first half. Stevenette just warming up! Taking terrible shots...like Dison shooting a fall away from 10 feet while double teamed when at least three others were setting up from three! Egwonu challenging two players (offensive foul) on the baseline when a pass out would have given an open shot to at least three players.

Cats only led once in the game. At the end. 62-61.

Shot poorly bEgwu was the only player to hit half his shots. 6-8. MSU was +11 on the boards and Egwu had 13. Won it on the boards and with ball security. Need to play a little better team D and they could back where they were 4 weeks ago.

Wow-how did that happen? How bad did SUU play to lose to us? My attitude toward this team is so fatalistic and toxic-I couldn't bear to watch down the stretch. I saw SUU go on a 6-0 run with two three pointers in between Flavian Davis passing on a wide open layup and turning it over so I just turned it off and waited for the inevitable loss.

This is a great win. Credit to the guys for getting it done-however they did it.

The stats^^^ Other than the final score it's pretty darn ugly. Davis disappears on offense and Coleman isn't hitting and not getting minutes. If everybody shows up, this team could be dangerous...but will that ever happen?

Nice surprise win.
Maybe, just maybe it is the start of a turn around.
A win leads to confidence which hopefully will lead to a few more wins.
Maybe will be end up being a dark horse and win the Big Sky Conference tourny and get in the play-in game for the big dance.

I'm not sure if a 1 point win over Southern Utah gives me much more hope than I had that MSU could go into Missoula or Ogden and win on the road in the BSC Tourney, even if they did win a couple games to get that far. February road wins have certainly been very few and far between though, so it's nice to see that! MSU realistically needs only one more win in their next three to ensure a spot in the tourney - ISU (4 wins), PSU (5 wins), and EWU (6 wins) could not catch MSU if they get one more, and Sac State at 7-10 would need to win out against ISU at home and the Montana schools on the road. They could even get in by going 0-3 if Sac State loses to ISU and UM. MSU is in pretty good shape when it comes to seeding tiebreakers against teams they have split with, as they are the only school other than UM to have beaten Weber so far.

Yeah that is what I'm afraid of. Huse's teams have always made the Big Sky tourney, but they always seem to back in. They have the tie breakers to do just that this season. Wouldn't it be nice to see them go into the tourney on a little winning streak. To my knowledge that has never happened under Huse-even in 2010 when we made the run in the tournament.

As for winning the tournament...I really believe this Weber team is one of their best ever. They are loaded and with the right matchup could do some damage in the NCAA tournament. How we beat them I will never know-and I was there to see it! I think Weber wins the Big Sky tourament in a walk no matter where it's played.

Actually it was 2009 when we made the run to the title game in the tourney, after ending the regular season with a 5-game losing streak. Then in 2010 we were in the midst of our typical late season collapse before righting the ship a bit, and winning our last 3 regular season games to finish 10-6 in conference, grabbing the #3 seed and a home game in the 1st round. That was Huse's best regular season, both in terms of BSC record and tourney seeding...the only time we've managed to get a home game in the 1st round during his tenure, I believe. I went to that game against PSU and we had it pretty much in the bag, with the lead and possession of the ball with less than 10 seconds left, as I recall. But then in those final seconds, if I remember correctly, I think we missed a free throw, and PSU came up with a steal, and we ended up blowing it....how typical. Despite that very disappointing loss, I truly believed that we just might have turned the corner, and I was fully behind Huse at that point in time. And for those who say that the atmosphere sucks at The Brick, for that one night at least, I'd have to disagree. The crowd wasn't huge, as high school tourneys were being played that same night I believe, but those that were there were very into it...very loud and enthusiastic. I found myself thinking that I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed going to college hoops games. Alas, things have been gradually declining ever since then. Last night's win was great, but just as Rome wasn't built in a day, MSU hoops won't be rejuvinated by one win over SUU. I'm not being a Debbie Downer, I'm just being realistic.

I should have looked it up-2009 not 2010. That 2010 playoff game was so frustrating. If I recall we beat Portland State easily in Portland the week before. PSU came into Bozeman with their best player (can't remember his name) carrying an injury. MSU led most of the game but it was tight all the way. We pretty much had it won, but missed freethrows, a three by Charles Odom (I think), and a complete collapse when they put on a full court press.

I keep thinking these horredous breaks our basketball program has gone through will somehow even out...but they never do.

The best way to catch the best is to get better.

Jeremiah Dominguez is the Portland State player you're thinking of. The formula to win the Big Sky the past handful of years has been simple...Star coach, star player, league title. Krystowiak and Andrew Strait (2005, 2006), Ken Bone and Dominguez (2008, 2009), Tinkle and Anthony Johnson (2010) then Will Cherry (2012).

It takes just one or two transcendent players to thrust your program to the top of the conference. And it takes the coach to find him.

Maybe you guys are on to something with this whole new coach thing...

Then again, at this point nothing would surprise me. Montana State could win their next three at home and go into the Big Sky tournament as the third seed...If you've really been following this team this winter, you certainly agree.

No it was Dominic Waters (looked it up). He had a leg injury and it was thought he wouldn't play, but he put in 40 minutes tough he was far from 100% Odum hit the three that put them ahead in that game (2010).

Here's the stats: http://statsheet.com/mcb/games/2010/03/ ... a-state-65" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Geez that game sucked.
