To me that statement is infuriating. She's an um grad and in the tank for that school-but that just makes her sound petty and bitter. Very unprofessional.WolfPtCat wrote:"Montana State University's strong engineering presence over the decades has left many students to conclude that they may have a stronger academic undergraduate experience there," Stearns said. "I would say that's not factual, but it's an impression." Sheila Stearns, Montana Commissioner of Higher Education, when comparing MSU to other universities in MT (mainly UM)
I realize that Ms. Stearns has to play-up all the colleges in Montana.....but that quote seems "not factual". Especially considering all the data previously posted.

Re: Montana's Top Students Choose MSU:
One would understand Stearn's consternation were they to recall she got her bachelor's, master's and doctorate from dUMb. As far as jag's comments--he's just a carroll by-product on the football bandwagon from that other place yet he doesn't feel any regret cashing his checks from MSUBelgradeBobcat wrote:To me that statement is infuriating. Let's see...Sheila Stearns (former classmate of mine) is running the University system and a UM grad..catgrouch (MSU grad) is rubbing one off to an old recording of "stand up and cheer" and you guys claim your school has more successful citizens than ours?? That's funny, even for you idiots..

"My boy? How's he doin' at the 'U? Boy's a helluva dancer, I can say that much."Standardized tests, however, are not the only measurement of Montana's best and brightest students, said James McKusick, dean of UM's Davidson Honors College. Those tests don't measure artistic flair. Some of UM's top students excel in dance, art and creative writing, he said.
"They may or may not fair well on the ACT, but we sure want them at the University of Montana," McKusick said.

"It was like a coordinated effort by the Missoulian and the police to bring UM Football program down..." eGriz 11/30/12

This highly successful bachelors from 71 and a masters in 76 (hence the "creative" 197176 screen name) by-product who is so proud of his accomplishments and is leading this "HUGE," "OVERACHIEVING" washington state school system with all these great scores calls himself successfulinfo197176 wrote:Let's see...Sheila Stearns (former classmate of mine) is running the University system and a UM grad..catgrouch (MSU grad) is rubbing one off to an old recording of "stand up and cheer" and you guys claim your school has more successful citizens than ours?? I always say that the best ski hill is the one you're at. I wonder if that applies to colleges.

..says the guy who was an educator in that educational bastion of the south, Georgia. Is it true if two Georgia high school grads get married that they can still be brother and sister??

You always digress and attempt to circumvent the topic at hand; how's that working with Olympia and Bellingham

Get back on topic. The best and the brightest of this state go to MSU rather that go somewhere to learn how to dance. Our ag grads knew how to kick sh*t before they arrived in Bozo to go home and make more money on the family ranch.

Possibly. But your record as a zebra for I recall a basketball tournament during the time Brand Robinson was in Manhattan when Opheim played Frazer. Never saw such blatant bias by an officiating crew to ensure Frazer had more points than Opheim. You continually come into this among other sites and belittle your rival and/or overcompensate defending the school that threw the diploma in the window when you drove through Missoula once in 71 and again in 76. At least Georgia has the backbone to suspend offials and ensure none of this occurs within their schools:info197176 wrote:Bud, If you're an example of our "best and brightest" God help us!!

Anything to win out here, right? But I would never accuse anyone out here of changing answers to just about make AYP.

C'mon rtb help me out here. Quips like this are exactly what this thread needs. I agree SKI mag is lagging in the ski industry.
Carroll/Great Divide vs. Tech/Disco Basin
CGF/Showdown vs. MSU-N/Bear Paw
Rocky/Red Lodge vs. UM-W/Maverick.
MSU/Bridger Bowl/Big Sky vs. UM/Snow Bowl/Lost Trail (or should we give UM Big Mtn or whatever it's called now?)rtb wrote:They aren't even authoritative on the ski industry!!MashTun wrote:SKI magazine? Now there is an authority on academic excellence.

Both are good schools, and both sides realize that. Of course were gonna take some shots at our rival, and of course our rival is gonna come on here and defend themselves. It's the nature of a rivalry.
But similar to the old adage "Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer", if you come on here and make a stupid post...

You might want to go back and check your facts. Last year, UM had 62M in external grant funds. MSU has always led the way in that area, however given that MSU is the land grant school for Montana....that is as expected.seataccat wrote:University of Montana does not qualify on the list because they do no have $40 Million in annual Federal Research.
University Rankings in research dollars
MSU is 121
UM is 171
also national merit scholors
MSU 14 ranked 109
UM 7 ranked 159

By god you are correct! Sorry about that, it was in the link I originally posted. There they are at 171. 2007 was the latest information I could find on research funding.grizdoc wrote:You might want to go back and check your facts. Last year, UM had 62M in external grant funds. MSU 117 Million
UM 56 Million
Why does being the land grant school have anything to do with how much research funding a school gets? Is it because land grant schools generally focus on science and agriculture?

Isn't that why you are always here GIW? You have become a professional boaster about all things griz. I generally agree with you about most matters on here but you need to be more objective about the whole cat/griz thing. I am sure it hurts when facts relating to the academics of the two institutions come to light. It's hard to put a positive spin on it so you couch it as childish "My University can beat up your University".GrizinWashington wrote:Ahhh, the annual "My University can beat up your University" thread. Just a thought...

Some advice: If you are getting rattled I suggest watching some of the shows on ESPN where the sport reporters argue their points with each other, but mostly keep a smile on their face while doing it.

The reason you had to go back and explain your point (such an inconvienience that it is) is because you had to ask for clarification on something that most (not many, but most) people don't need. You were trying to take what he said "many" and imply that he might be saying "most" or "more than" when it was all but obvious he wasn't. You'd do well to save that kind of BS for the courtroom. It often works there.
