Griz as Vandals
When is a Griz a Vandal? Last night apparently. Someone painted Griz in Maroon and Grey on the outside of Bobcat stadium. They could have done more inside; I didn't look.

It might make the news. I noticed it during a walk this morning. I called campus police and they had just noticed it themselves. Just your typical Bobcats suck, Go griz stuff; nothing creative. They did their work on the outside of the stadium around the SE corner. They actually did more to the track area, ruining our track rules sign, and messing up some other signs. They painted over the handicapped parking signs, and painted Go Griz on the asphalt around the track and on some concrete pavement. Fortunately, our conference championship signs were stored away for the summer.

Or it could be a typical griz fan, Jag... the mindset between the two demographics is almost identical. God forbid something like this would ever happen in stinkytown... boy would there a lot of huffing and puffing from the frontbums in frizzlyville.jagur1 wrote:Sounds like kids that know what buttons to push.

I learned this morning that the stadium was vandalized during the Sweet Pea Festival last year as well, when they spelled out Go Griz with oil on the field, killing the grass. Maybe they did it again, don't know yet. So it may be the same people. Yes I'm sure it goes both ways, just takes someone to get the ball rolling. Push the right buttons? I would say wrong buttons, but "push" is appropriate.

I seem to remember an incident where some vandals scribed some pro-griz slogan onto the grass at Bobcat Stadium, maybe 5 years ago or so?
The interesting thing is that I've never heard of this happening at WaGriz and I generally read the Missoulian every day. griz fans, please provide some links/data/proof that similar things have happened in missoula.

I'll chime in. First, I hope whoever did this gets caught and appropriately punished. Vandalism is always inexcusable, and when it happens to public property, we all pay for it (not that that is the source for my outrage; it would be equally reprehensible if the stadium were privately owned).
I'll also freely admit that I do not have sources / links / proof of Cat fans ever having done anything like this in Missoula. (There is a common urban legend in Missoula that Cat fans once painted the "M" on Mount Sentinel blue before a Griz-Cat game, but I do not know if there is truth behind that rumor.) I have no doubt that in the 100+ year history of the rivalry, things like this have probably happened on both sides, but I am not specifically aware of such events, so if anyone wants to read this as a referendum on the moral superiority of Cat fans over Griz fans, then have at it, I guess.
The only point I want to make on this thread is with regard to Gavin's reference to this being the actions of "typical Griz fans." Are you really so blinded by hatred for UM that you actually think that the "average" Griz fan goes out and damages public property just to have a few laughs at MSU's expense?

There was an article in the Missoulian about how the Griz stay in Livingston now instead of Bozeman becaus their bus kept getting vandalized by Cat fans. I think it ran before the 2003 Griz-Cat game. I will post it here as soon as I find it.El_Gato wrote:I seem to remember an incident where some vandals scribed some pro-griz slogan onto the grass at Bobcat Stadium, maybe 5 years ago or so?

The Cats stay in Stevensville for the same reason. Plus it gives players from both teams, the opportunity to stay away from distractions of any kind before the game.Nick wrote:There was an article in the Missoulian about how the Griz stay in Livingston now instead of Bozeman becaus their bus kept getting vandalized by Cat fans. The one problem I have with Livingston is what happens when the Griz wake up Saturday morning and the Pass is closed. I wonder what the Highway Dept. would do to get the bus over the pass? You have to admit it's a funny thought.
Never mistake activity for accomplishment.

The stadium vandalism was scrubbed off yesterday, and you can't tell it was even there except for some paint they can't get out of the brick. Facilities services did a great job. The stuff around the track entrance will be cleaned up next. We may not be able to salvage the track rules sign. The rest of the damage was left on the asphalt road and the concrete path just inside the gate. No damage to the football field this time.
