I actually think it's going to take longer than just the first two non-conf. games to realize what kind of team we have this year. We could be going into week 6 with a 3-1 record and a bye and still have no idea. South Dakota and Weber haven't been exactly power houses the last few years. With the exception of Oregon, I think our schedule, even with a D-II in it, is a good start for a rookie QB.I'm just saying that this year's non-conference games are more critical for the Griz than normal because they have question marks at so many KEY positions.

The reason that most people think that the Cats are going to do better then the Griz in the money games this year is because of Oklahoma States weak secondary. I had read somewhere that OSU only has 2 scholarship players at CB. With our passing game that really makes it seem like an area that we can exploit. I am not saying that the Cats are going to beat OSU, but I would much rather play OSU than Oregon.

What makes it tough is the variability of the teams involved. Oregon and Montana State keep a lot of last year's talent (which could have been far better / worse) whereas the Gecko doesn't know jack about Ok. State but does know Montana returns some very good players and has some losses.
One of the main questions is attitude. Before the C-State game last year, one could tell the players simply didn't have their hearts set on the win. They were excited to go to the game, but didn't think they were going to win. Montana State doesn't have a record of performing well against I-A schools, Montana does.
And for all the love that everyone gives Oregon, Oregon is an inconsistent program. It's the school that beat Michigan then went on a 3 game slide in 2003. It's the school that lost to Indiana to start 2004 and scared California on the road. The Ducks had quite a bit of Rose Bowl talk leading up to the 2004 season, which evaporated after week two.
The Gecko just can't see Montana State playing well in Stillwater, but he'd love to be proven wrong. On the other hand, Montana doesn't know how to get blown out. The Gecko would take Montana to have a better game, but admits there's way too much variability in the equations to give any sort of accurate prediction.

I agree that the Griz play a lot differently on the road than at home, mainly because the Griz have a huge home field advantage at Washington-Griz. The road win over Eastern Washington did a lot to prove that the Griz can win away from Wash-Griz. As far as the crowd noise, I have been to both Autzen and Wash-Griz. Although others disagree, Wash-Griz is far louder than Autzen.hokeyfine wrote:gecko: good thoughts. one thing you forgot to point out was that the griz are just average on the road. against a "real" 1-a opponent, not idawho or the old oregon state, this becomes a major factor.
There's one thing that makes it very difficult to predict how the Griz will do against Oregon. The Griz haven't played a payout game since Oregon State, and I don't see the Griz getting a payout mentality. You are exactly right that the Griz haven't played a team with Rose Bowl aspirations in a very long time. I still think that Oregon could be in big trouble very quickly if they underestimate the Griz chances. I've seen lower-level I-A schools either beat or put huge scares into BCS schools. Montana is better than a lower-level I-A.

Gecko,
The only way Oregon would pay for sleep-walking into the griz game or looking past them or not taking the griz seriously would be if the griz came into Eugene with a VETERAN, experienced ballclub that had a ton of confidence.
No matter what the blowhards from Missou might say, there is no way that team goes in with the same mind-set they might have, say, if Dave D. or Ah Yat or Ochs was at the helm.
If anyone doubts this viewpoint, keep the following in mind:
I know some of you griz fans will blast me for spreading rumors and/or just "making up" negative shiznit about the Griz, but the following story was told to me by a buddy of mine who is a big griz fan. He told me that he was in Stock's a few weeks ago and that Lex is apparently tending bar there this summer. He struck up a conversation with Lex & simply asked him how he felt about the upcoming season. My buddy swears that Lex's first comments were "I don't know; our quarterbacks SUCK!".
If you accept this story as true (and if you knew the source, you'd know he has NO desire or reason to lie about something like this), I think you'd have to accept that at least ONE important component on the Griz offense is not as confident as he'd like to be...

Their QB's can't suck .. I mean Baby Hauck was voted 1-AA's top recruiter. I'm sure he has to have 2-3 sweet QB's on the roster?El_Gato wrote:Gecko,

Put it this way. If Spring Ball was Fall practice then I'd be worried. Lex was right if you limit his comments to Spring. The QB's did pretty much suck!
However, there is a lot of time between Spring and Fall and I expect better play this fall. Both QB's were new but they were also playing with a lot of guys that won't be seeing much practice time once things get serious. I once heard someone comment, Spring is for teaching, Fall is for preaching. (Or something like that.)
IMO the Griz will do fine even if the QB play is just adequate. With the team the Griz have this year we don't need spectacular QB play. Just someone who is steady and doesn't make stupid mistakes (We could use another John Edwards type). The rest will take care of itself.

As promised, here is the 1st response from my inlaws. Sorry about the caps but I'm "cut and pasting" it from my email.VictorG wrote: My inlaws are BIG OSU fans and make all home games and several road games every year. I'll try to get some feeling from them on this years team.
NEW COACH IS REAL TOUGH, KICKED OFF 4 STARTERS ALREADY FOR BREAKING TEAM RULES. TRAGIC STORY ABOUT THE MOST POPULAR DEFENSIVE PLAYER WHO WAS ON THE ALL BIG 12 TEAM LAST YEAR WAS KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT LAST MONTH. COACH MILES WAS 5 YARDS AND A CLOUD OF DUST TYPE, COACH GUNDY, WAS COWBOY QUARTERBACK, LIKES TO OPEN IT UP AND AIR IT OUT. STRONG POINTS WILL BE AT QUARTERBACK , WITH WOODS WHO STARTED ALL GAMES LAST YEAR AS A TRUE FRESHMAN AND A REDSHIRT FRESHMAN WHO SAT OUT LAST YEAR. HE WAS RATED AS ONE OF THE TOP 5 HIGH SCHOOL QUARTERBACKS IN NATION , PLAYED AT SOME SCHOOL IN HOUSTON. DEFENSIVE SECONDARY HAS ALMOST ALL SENIORS WITH 3 YEARS EXPIRENCE. LOST THEIR BEST RUNNING BACK WHO WENT PRO AFTER HIS JUNIOR YEAR. WENT LAST SPRING PRACTICE AND WAS SUPRISED TO SEE THEM USE THE NO HUDDLE ABOUT 75% OF THE TIME. TIME FLYS, I THINK THE BOBCAT GAME IS LABOR DAY WEEK END. MOST LIKLEY GOING TO BE HOT AND HUMID, WILL BE TOUGH ON THE KITTYS DEFENSE GOING AGAINST THE NO HUDDLE GO GO OFFENSE. I BELIEVE THE BEST RUNNING BACK WILL BE THE QUARTERBACK, WOODS, WHO WILL RUN A LOT OF OPTIONS AND COMPLETES A LOT OF PASSES AFTER HE ROLLS OUT. IF THE KID BEATS HIM OUT WOODS WILL PROBABLY BE THE NUMBER ONE RUNNING BACK. HE'S A GREAT ATHLETE, HIS BROTHER IS A WIDE RECEIVER, AND HIS OLDER BROTHER IS PLAYING FOR THE 49ERS.

Another set of inlaw reporting:
OSU has a new coach and new offensive and defensive systems this year so it's
hard to predict what they will do. Offense should be more wide open with the
no huddle and more passing. Defense going back to regular 4 - 3 which I hope
will be better. We still probably be favored by at least 28.
