Agreed. Not to say that Murray wont be good, he just wont be Greatwood. I actually think Murray can be pretty special this upcoming season. He is extremely fast, and looks to have some good hands. I can see him having a season comparable to Greatwood last year.JahGriz wrote:This Griz fan voted no, as I think Gatewood will be the man. He has had time to adjust to the system and Lulay.

Could be a dangerous combination, with Lulay at the helm. I don't recall much about Guinn or your other WRs, but looking thru your WRs there are some guys who appear to have a lot of potential to add to Murray and Gatewood.
Sadly, the Griz don't have anyone with real speed at WR, but instead a host of reception type guys, a few of which, have potential to make plays after the catch, but might have trouble getting good separation. Good height and some athletes who could break out and have good years, or it could take them a year to get their bearing...but still no great speed.
It looks to be a year of speed at WR in the Big Sky though. PSU will have tons of speed at WR, Carey, Costa, along with their burner from last year, EWU will have Kimble and some potential others, ISU always has good WR and will have Lacey, Okabar(though not a burner), and a couple others back. Not sure about NAU or SAC.

We've only seen Murray in one scrimmage; I was upset initially when he couldn't hang onto the slants but I also realize who we have sitting back at the safeties ready to give him a little kiss
What he definitely brings to us is the ablility to separate and stretch the field so we won't have to rely so much on that crap underneath. We're going to look very different this year from last year; I predict we're simply going to manhandle most of our schedule, especially if we keep the kids in Bozo working out over the summer. Have to wonder how bad these kids want to play on Sunday because that thing called desire is the only thing that'll keep a half dozen of them off the draft board next year
We're going to be REAL good in all phases of the game.

That is a great assessment of our recievers Jah, great assessment. This group has the potential to be...well...great!JahGriz wrote:Could be a dangerous combination, with Lulay at the helm. I dont remember seeing him drop too many passes. In fact I dont recall seeing a kid drop much if anything (until the end of scrim) w/ exception to some of the young TEs, and many of those were caused by hard hits from the LBs.Cat Grad wrote:We've only seen Murray in one scrimmage; I was upset initially when he couldn't hang onto the slants but I also realize who we have sitting back at the safeties ready to give him a little kissWhat he definitely brings to us is the ablility to separate and stretch the field so we won't have to rely so much on that crap underneath. As for the "under crap" maybe I am just misreading you, but slants, curls and out patterns open things up for pump fakes, double routes, and the deep patterns as well as the running game. The short passing game is important as anything the offense does because of what it sets the table for later in the game.

What we were forced to run last year is indicative of not having two tight ends, a fullback or at least one tackle that will allow you to run simple leads, blasts or traps, unless of course Bolton was his own line
We could pass block pretty good, but...this year I think we'll move people off the line when we get our tight ends back.

I agree with you there Cat Grad. I'd love to see the Cats run the ball more this year, and I think that point will be driven in hard by Kramer.Cat Grad wrote:What we were forced to run last year is indicative of not having two tight ends, a fullback or at least one tackle that will allow you to run simple leads, blasts or traps, unless of course Bolton was his own lineWe could pass block pretty good, but...this year I think we'll move people off the line when we get our tight ends back.

I hope when Travis looks up at the scoreboard this year at about--say 11:41 in the third--and we're on our own twenty and our 2-3 touch lead, we can go to the bank that after three possessions, the lead is still the same and the game clock ticks to 0:00
We've got the horses this year to play ball control and clock management with a lead

I like the optimism, but 'whoa nellie' it sounds like we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves here. This team still has a huge question mark in the special teams area, because I don't think any of the three kickers has made one kick yet at MSU and this stadium is not easy on kickers (wind, sloppy field). Not to mention the coach has a short fuse with kickers. The return game is not set and the punter is still the QB, which has its pluses and minuses.
Also, the defense is going to TRY to transition from 4-3 to 3-4, which means growing pains at the least or a switch back to 4-3. Probalby will do some 4-3 still, but it's just another thing they have to iron out. The secondary is also up in the air. Will Hunter be effective? Will Smith come back from a bad injury that he's still nursing? If not, then what?
This running game that is suddenly a mauler is made of essentially the same players as a year ago. And if I remember right, it was all but abandoned then. The QB position is one-deep right now.
I realize that Coach K is trying to get things lined out and says he has the talent to do so, but how much of that is coach speak and how much of it is reality?
Unless ALL of these Q-marks are straightened out this team certainly isn't going to just cake-walk through the schedule with playoff home games waiting for it. It's a nice thought, but there are way too many Qs out there to dive in right now.

What is different this year is how Kramer talked in Helena. He said that in the past few years he has...well...sort of been over enthusiastic...not really lying but "almost" as he put it.
This year he said that honestly he doesn't know what to expect. To me it sounded like he is guardedly optimistic and afraid to say so. I think he really likes the way the team has come out of winter workouts and would like to say they're going to be good but feels they can show us wrather than have to be hyped.

i agree with you on this one there helcat - judging from what i read about kramers visit to helena he seems a bit more optimistic.Helcat72 wrote:What is different this year is how Kramer talked in Helena. also i looked at the stats from the gf scrimige and these stand out
one of the backup qbs only missed one pass
which means we are more then a one quarterback team
dominik is slimmer, faster, and more productive, lets hope the fumbalitis he had last year is only a one year thing
we are deaper at wr - meaning no more cringing when chaz guinn is passed the ball

one word: twoley
This space for rent....

I am confident about this staff's ability to help this young bunch achieve what they're capable of from the opening kickoff in Stillwater (which is screwing around with the GSU-Navy option, btw). Check them out in Bozo without Lulay this weekend and then compare them at the SH Classic. Wish I could be in Bozo because I think Carpenter has a better arm and Coppock is a better athlete. They are just plain good and all it's going to take is winning this fall. By not giving up the redshirts last year, we're set for many years to come.
