GTF Scrim Notes
Just have time to post a couple of quick notes before heading back:
-Good crowd, 3,000 plus on a cold windy day. I'm sure nice weather would have put GTF at 4,000 plus. Don't remember any ball games last year as cold as this scrim.
-Good participation on camps, looked like 100 plus on both.
-Fund raising appeared to exceed expectations. Banquet was around 700?
-It looks like we are deep on receivers, 2nd string receivers were impressive, very impressive. Little Lulay did very good, #87 Toby Rundle really caught my eye, several catches, took some hard hits and bounced right back, nice end zone catch.
-Kicking game was 3 for 4. Bad contact kick at 35, and one at 35 that would have been good close to 50. Both PAT's good, one was legged/line driven in, looked like bad thread position.
-No big explosive running plays, several good hard runs, no big break aways. Dominineck does look thined down.
-D look good, several blocked passes up front, did not give up many big plays. Force looked good, seemed to hold back a little, at the end he did not hold back and had a int, and a couple real pretty defensive coverages.
-Back up QB's looked good, pretty even, but I thought Coppack looked sharper, seems to jel better with the team. This one should generate some discussion.

GREAT falls scrim.
I thought they looked great for it being the first scrimage on a short practice schedule. I won't reiterate (sp) what was already said.
*I noticed several people on the Dline, think they are trying to find the best combination with the syunts and pulls that go with a 3-4 defense.
*Was told that the Triangle classic was already over, are you ready for this.... $100,000.00 by last night however this was just what I was told. I know the 3 or 4 items in the auction went for a combined +10,000.00. Kudos to the Great Falls Boosters and JW for all their work.
*Thought the O was quyite a ways ahead of the D in the whole scheme of things, as the should be.
*Seemed to me that we ran a lot of stuff to Dominick, with running plays and passes out of the backfield, and all of them weren't screen passes. *S*
*Bolton looked fair to good I thought, his good kicks were great and he definatley has a leg, but the 2 bad ones were both mental errors, I had a perfect spot to watch and the laces were never a factor. On the PAT he just clubbed it high. And the I don't have a good name for it FG he came up to soon. The good news he should be able to easily work through both problems.
*I stopped by the Brick afterwards for a few Brews and they were replaying the 2003 Cat/Friz game it sure gives you a warm feeling when you watch that game.
*The highest selling item at the auction was a game day experience to the Okla. game. Sounds preetty cool with flying down with the team, staying with them eating with them going to all the meetings and in the lockeroom stuff. Sold for $5500.00

What did I miss; on the news tonight K said “we didn’t catch the ball very well”. Passing game looked stronger than the running game, no surprise. As stated earlier, I thought the young WR’s did pretty good. Granted I missed too many plays, too many trips running to get my kids hot chocolate.
-Talking to players on the field afterwards the younger receivers felt they had a good scrim, but a lot of improvement needed.
-Last years Red Shirts seem to be a pretty tight group. Appears they hang together, saw a lot of them huddled up discussing the scrim, with intensity, they stood out to me to be a pretty competitive crew, looking to take care of business.
-Sure is exciting to see Lulay to Lulay, and Rundel appears to be an exciting player that generates momentum.
-While talking on the field the holder apologized for a bad hold; said film will show bad ball position on one of the FG's.
-What about the program cover? Is thid program cover the poster for next year? Pretty cool picture. Lulay and Mollohan in flight suites in front of an F-16, theme “Firepower”, or was that just the triangle classic cover?
-All in all the mood on the field after the scrim was very positive, players seem to like the GTF scrim, anxious to review the film and hit the field next week.
-The big human seems very focused on nothing less than execution and winning.
-I was very encouraged by the attitude of the young guys, they seem focused and competitive to getting er done next year. Seemed to be a very successful first scrim, play on the field, attendance, and money generated, the fall looks to be very good!

If someone will scan it and email it to me rtb@bobcatnation.com I will put it up for everyone to see.LaCat wrote:Would sure like to see that program cover. Being 2000 miles away makes it difficult to ever view those things. Is there any way to view it or can someone post it here?
Thanks.

I can't add too much new, except that the GTF Boosters did a great job. A nice crowd at the game announced at 3527 even though the weather was less than desireable. I did not make the Friday nite dinner, but heard from others that it went great with almost 700 people. The dinner and auction reportedly pulled in $70,000! Not sure what the game itself pulled in, but all in all financially this was a great success. I am sure we will see this game in GTF again next year. Kudos to Al Getten and the rest of the GTF Booster Club.
I thought it was a pretty good scrimmage for a first effort and saw some very encouraging signs for both next year and the future. Next week's scrimmage will tell us quite a bit more, but this was a good start. JD looked slimmed down (GTF Tribune said he is 12 lbs lighter) and looked much quicker to me. Our second string WRs all impressed me. Mike Brown only played a bit due to a viral infection, but he looks like an athlete. Tyler Lulay played very well and Toby Rundle really stepped up and made a statement yesterday. I really feel very comfortable with our receiver corp-at least two deep at every position. we did have some drops but that does not worry me yet this early. Most drops seemed to be by the young tight ends. Tremaine Murray also dropped a few, but he does look like the real deal. Much bigger than I thought and definitely fast. I am excited about him and Gatewood together next year.
Carpenter looked better to me at QB than Coppack for the second QB. Both seem capable and we do need to get them in some games next year. A blowout game in Nov against um would be nice to see which one will take over the next year
The defense seems certainly better than late last year-and a lot bigger. The starting D-line was Matakis at nose and Cogley and Papich at ends. Kolone was sitting out with a slight knee problem from his car accident and Rogers was on crutches, but if those two guys come back fine, we will be soild. Saucedo played all day on the second unit at nose, but he looked good and he is huge. The new JC end Macciola played very well-he looks like he needs to gain some strength, but he is definitely quick and was in the backfield pretty regularly.
Our secondary looks better, especially since still learning. It was nice to see Kahaim Hunter back out there and he made some nice plays. I am hopeful that we get Eddie Smith back and the New Mexico transfer in the fall, because we do still look a bit thin there if we have any injuries. The safety position is a bit deeper, but not if we have to start moving some of them to CB again. LBs are deep and some of the young ones such as Bobby Daly and Wes Maiua looked very good.
O-line also looks solid and deep. The second unit looks even bigger than our first unit. The second unit had Verlanic at center, Chris Smith and Beniger at gaurd, and Jensen and Decock at tackle. I think we are in good shape behind the starters.
I hope the weather is better in Bozeman on Saturday and we have a fun time again.
Go Cats!

One thing I was impressed with was the speed and size of these kids. Absolutely amazed at how big some of the OL and DL kids have gotten.
And the size of these kids is muscle too. Joe Hirst is 300+ and he didnt look to have a bit of fat on him at all! Cats can field an OL that is athletic as any we've seen before, and that includes some 300 pounders out there too.

Ryan Kelly....another RS. You were right on with the huge number of them playing Saturday. Future is brightCat Grad wrote:#3 as a corner

Coppack and Carpenter had great scrimmage. Those young receivers were fantastic too. Nice to see the wideouts catching the ball BEFORE they run, and still able to make some yardage after the catch. Lulay (Tyler), Mike Brown, Stenslund and Rundle....solid solid corp to follow Greatwood and Murray. In fact, it wouldnt surprise me to see one of these young bucks challenge Chaz Guinn for playing time.

How tall is Guin? Gotta believe there's a real comfort level with that bunch and that we'll get a chance to see Carpenter and Coppack quite a bit this year
After looking down the roster, I kind of have a real appreciation as to what the coaching staff must have been thinking the last three games last year after burning how many redshirts the previous two years. REAL happy they resisted the temptation

Might as well chime in my thoughts about the Scrim.
Defense - looked pretty good, help the offense to very few big plays and got in the backfield a few times. I also saw a lot of batted balls, which a 3-4 defense must do well - have to cut off the passing lanes. Force had an INT and Smith made a couple nice knockdowns. But with all the tipped balls, I was hoping for more pics than just one. Matakis is going to be good, and the LB core was solid. Watch out of Papich, that kid is going to impress. I worry about pressure on the QB. They did snuff the run pretty well.
Offense, I'll break down player by player (I'm more of at O guy than D).
Lulay - Was off. Overthrew at least 3 receivers and one INT right into Forces hands. Had a few nice completions, but overall, needs to get his groove back, which he will. He wasn't impressive last year at the last scrim I saw, let alone this being the first.
Rundle - Impressive. Caugh everything thrown to him, must've had around 80 yards receiving. Looks fast, gets good seperation, could challenge for 3rd or 4th spot this year, and maybe start in a year or two.
M Brown - Looked quick, agile, and has pretty good hands. Expect to see good things from him next year.
Domineck - Trimmed down, looked quicker to the hole, and more explosive. Was shut down most of the day, as was Gathing. JD had one run for about 10 yards, I think that was his biggest. But he has great hands out of the backfield, he made several good catches. He will be a good double threat.
Murray - Quick, pretty good hands. Needs to gel more with the offense, but I do expect him to be #2 or #3 next year. If he reaches full potential, Gatewood/Murray may be the best tandum I've seen in years.
OL - Looked strong, big. Was able to contain the 3-4 (nonblitzh) fairly easily, and picked up the blitzes pretty nicely too.
Guinn - Made a few nice catches, I still feel this guy is going to be a good WR for us, I hope this is his breakout year, he can finish 2nd or 3rd in yards.
Twolay - He is quick, gets great seperation, and has good hands. He had several big catches, and give him a few years and he'll be a great one.
Overall, for a first scrimmage, I was impressed. Teams often look horrid after only what, 4 practices? But we look big, physical, and fast. Yes Cat fans, next year could be a great one.

O'Toole was in there with the second string. Not bad at all. Will provide some nice depth for us this year.CARDIAC_CATS wrote:Did anyone happen to see O'tool in the scrimmage at all? I'm just curious as he and Rogers were standing by each other last year and they are about the same size it looked like? Is he still on the team?
