Golden To Play In CV/McNary Showdown
Michael Golden hasn't let injuries get him down
There are only two teams still undefeated in Valley League play, and pretty soon only one will be left standing. Crescent Valley makes the jaunt to Keizer to take on McNary and all indications are that Michael Golden will be playing. The solid 6-foot-5, 200-pound wing/post has missed essentially the past three games due to a dislocated bone in his foot, and while he's still not at full strength, he plans on taking the floor on Tuesday night.
"I'm about 75, 80 percent," Golden said. "It's getting better. Hopefully I'll be able to play well."
The plan is for Golden to match up with Celtics star Phil Nelson, and even though Golden isn't 100 percent, it should be a great battle. Despite the recent injury problem, it's been a good year for the senior forward who has helped lead the Raiders to an 11-1 record and a number five ranking in the OregonPreps.com Top Ten.
"It's going good," Golden said. "The team is doing well, and I think I am playing pretty well. I could probably step it up more on rebounds though."
On the recruiting front, things have unfortunately slowed down. While not to a complete halt, there haven't been too many new developments for Golden. He didn't sign with the University of Seattle in the fall and while he's still considering them he's also hoping to hear more from the D-I schools he used to hear from.
"It's still pretty much the same - not much has changed," Golden said. "I'm still hearing from Seattle, and Montana State said they were going to come down and watch me play at the end of the month."
Golden isn't too worried about all that right now however, as Crescent Valley is riding high, racking up wins, and getting contributions from the guys on the team outside the big three of Golden, Brett Casey, and Brice Kelly.
"Guys are stepping up and getting better and better," Golden said. "More people are taking on the load in scoring."

******** Rumor Alert **********
Here Is the name and picture of 6-8 Dennis Pease, of Panola JC. In Texas. He is from Lubbock, TX Coronado High School. My understanding he is one of Durhams main targets for this springs signing period. He is averaging 11 points a game but is more known for his rebounding at over 11.5 per game. He is shooting 58% from the field and 77% from the line. His hi game so far this season was 17 points and 19 rebounds. He played for Midland Texas last year,

You only cut down on those if the guards actually work the ball inside. Besides, 34 3's in a two game weekend isnt that many. Its all how those are taken in the flow of the game and offense.peedintunnel wrote:Can we get a big man who can score that rock. Maybe we can cut down on 5 - 34 3pt weekends that way.
Its when we have 3-4 kids standing 2 feet outside the 3-point line, no cuts, no screens, no movement at all...those are the 3's that kill us.
Teams who play good man-to-man defense must drool over playing the Cats when they get lazy on the perimeter.

This kid plays on a team that has two 20 points a game scorers on his JC team. In high school he was 19 point a game scorer, besided, if the guards can get the ball to Beye and/or Moss those guys can score it. What I would really like to see is more rebounding.peedintunnel wrote:Can we get a big man who can score that rock. Maybe we can cut down on 5 - 34 3pt weekends that way.

Boy, I agree with mslacat. A big time rebounder would be a novel idea for MSU! Even if a guy could not shoot from farther than 2 feet away from the basket, if we had a guy who crashed the boards hard all the time, he could easily average 12+ points a game with offensive rebound putbacks. Anybody remember Doug Hashley?

Saw Doug this weekend. Boy the guy pissed me off!! I believe he is at least two years older than me, and he looks like he could lace the sneakers up today and play for the Cats tomorrow, and no one would think he was out of place!! He is sick!HelenaCat wrote:Boy, I agree with mslacat. A big time rebounder would be a novel idea for MSU! I knew that; just wanted to respond to what I've watched over the years how both schools in Montana seem to forget how good the B/C kids are. Sure would be nice to see some of the kids that can shoot the ball in the Helena tournament come off the bench this year. Montana girls are going out of state at an alarming rate and coming back and embarrassing us of late.

What I ment by that is that in the past and present Durham seems to get alot of guys form JC's that are big, but are never scorers. We have had some big dudes that could do alot of things except score. Maybe that is because we have not had anybody who could coach them. I was thinking of guys like Plummer, Ento, Baye, Towsley, Rufas, and so on and so on. None of these guys could get the ball on the block and score consistantly.peedintunnel wrote:Can we get a big man who can score that rock. Maybe we can cut down on 5 - 34 3pt weekends that way.
I do see things that are encouraging. I think the new assistant is teaching big al and moss some things.

OK lets make this Official
Durham is recruiting Jack McGillis. My info comes from sources from the Missoula side
and from Bozeman. I feel real comfortable in what I am posting. The best way to put
this is that "Mick is very intrigued" by McGillis. They have had phone contact and Mick
is going to try to catch a game or two of McGillis/Hellgate this week. He has never seen
McGillis play in person, yet. McGillis has done a great job of selling himself to Mick
and Mick like wise has really impressed McGillis. The position McGillis plays/
projected to play fit into exactly one of the spots Durham wants to recruit this spring.
As far competition to sign McGillis, I have heard Kysco is feeling the heat and has asked
McGillis to walk-on his first year with a promise of a Scholarship his second year (very
similar to what Durham originally did with Owsley). Additionally NAU has become
very interested/active, the last week along with D-1, Sienna in New York. With
McGillis's production the last two weeks also schools like Pepperdine and Wyoming
have started to call Hellgate Coach Sampson.
For the record I have watched McGillis three times this year in basketball and twice in
football. The guy who he is reminding me of is Adam Leachman. He would need to
work on his dibbling as a Guard, but he is good in the open court. He is a little bit of a
tweener forward but with a 36" vertical leap he definitely can compensate for that.
I am usually bias when it comes to Missoula kids and more so with Hellgate kids, so I
will just trust Durham on this one........ but he is from Hellgate so sign him!

Only kid I can think of who is redshirting is Ted Morris. He is a 7-footer from Indiana State - junior next year?
To get McGillis and have him redshirt next season would be perfect! Unless of course he is ready to step in and make a contribution next year. I saw him play against Bozeman a week or two ago, and the comparison to Leachman is a good one. I would also compare him to John Lazosky - talent wise of course, nobody compares with the ego/attitude Big John had.

The compaison to Leachman is good, but McGillis has a better springs, and he is not as tubby and Laz. McGillis will need to get in the Weight room a little, but most freshman do anyway.

Ok 1 part Adam Leachman and 1 part Spoja.
I thought of Spoja, because of the springs, but Spoja was outstanding as an athlete, but he also had the advantage of having other big men on his team and could roam a litle bit more. I have seen some of McGilli's athletisism on the brake and he is pretty good but in the Half court game he has less oppertunity to show this side. It is not a knock but I put Kral Ferch, Spoja, and Rodger Fasting in in pretty select company.
