Shouldn't there be a "Going to be Cats thread"? It is fine if kids want to go to other schools, but worry about who you get, not who you wish you had!UMLawCat wrote:Cats offered Featherston a full and griz offered him a half...and he said one of the reasons he wanted to go to the griz, is b/c they wanted him to red shirt, but the Cats wanted him to play special teams right away.
Most kids want to get on the field right off the bat, but apparently he had different reasoning. It's tough to win when every kid wants somthing different.
Maybe Bignell will end up with the Cats...
Capital boys seem to be better gamers than Helena high boys anyway...McIntyre, Crebo, Carothers, Daly, Sampson, Emmert, the majority of players at Carroll College the last 6 years...I guess, Helena High does produce good kickers, Carpenter, and Petek was a beast.
(Of course, I am a little biased...ha ha)

I don't really buy this... on several levels. First off - Kramer doesn't like to play true Freshman unless it's absolutely necessary, and I certainly don't think he's going to waste a Red Shirt for a special teams player. Secondly - if this kid truly turned down a full with us for a half with UM... it's because he's a griz fan.UMLawCat wrote:Cats offered Featherston a full and griz offered him a half...and he said one of the reasons he wanted to go to the griz, is b/c they wanted him to red shirt, but the Cats wanted him to play special teams right away.

This is actually a funny thread. Everyone gets pisses because we did recruit one guy but not the other, did we offer or did we not, who has talked to who. I don't think anyone ever hears the real story from a recruit unless you are the parents. They may say someone is recruiting them to try to get someone else to. We only have so many scholarships to give and we need to cover multiple positions. If we go offer the 4 best linebackers in the State and then they all say yes I will take that what do we do. I am sure the coaches zone in on their preferred recruits while keeping in contact with others. When it becomes apparent, as now with Featherston that he is not coming they will concentrate on the next in line or others they have offered.
People need to realize, we cannot get everyone, this is a great case where we offered more (supposedly) and still did not get the guy. Gives us great stuff to talk about but lets wait to rip on coaches until we see who they get. I for one have been very happy with the recruits we have gotten the last several years. Some are players we would never have had a chance with 5 years ago.

I think Taito was a necessity - but I was perplexed by Gazzero as well - unless he though he may have had a chance to start at LB or safety...rollo_tumasi wrote:He did with Gazzero & Taito.
I don't know, maybe I'm wrong - but I know I remember hearing Kramer say it's real tough for a true Freshman to get playing time on one of his teams...

I know nothing about the family, but for many families, money isn't really a huge factor. If it was, nobody would ever to go Carroll or Rocky, even on a "full scholarship."

Not for everyone. I didn't have that luxury going to school, but I know several people that had better offers from schools, but their parents encouraged them to go to the right school even if they had to pay for some of the schooling. There are people in Montana that have enough money to cover their kids education.LoyalCat wrote:Maybe not in California, but $$$ is an issue in Montana

I didn't mean to rip on coaches by any means. I was just passing on gossip that actually did come from his parents (via a third party). Of course, two weeks ago when the Cats offered him a full, the same source told me he was excited for cats...then the two days later after Booby made the trip to Helena, he flip-flopped and went to Griz.catatac wrote:I don't really buy this... on several levels. I do agree, though everything is complete speculation and parents and eighteen-year-old kids can change plans a dozen times in the next month. What really matters is who signs on the dotted line at the end of Jan.
If a kid turns down a full for a half, the coach may probably did everything they could to land him.
You are right, it does give us something to talk about, and I thought that was the point of the boards. (It's kinda fun to speculate though, especially when I only have information about Helena kids, so it would be great to hear from other venues).
So if someone wants to start "Going to the Bobcats" Thread, please do...I would love to read it...but right now the only info I have is from the four athletes from Helena,
Bignell (Offered half from Griz, still wants to be a Cat),
Shirley (Unsure if he has been offered from the Griz or Cats and wants to be a Nebraska Corn Husker)
Hustad (Talked to by the from the Griz, still wants to go to the Pac-10...or ASU???)
Featherston (Dead horse...smothered and kicked and to death).

Does anybody have any idea how many scholarships are going to be used on new recruits? I am assuming Kramer will give some deserving kids that are on our roster some of scholarships available.
What positions should we be recruiting for? I would imagine our secondary is taking a big hit across the board and that Kramer will want to offer a scholarship or two to some juco transfers along with one or two transfers for wide recievers.
I see Lulay, Tolliver, Lewis, perhaps Brown and a juco transfer competing for wide reciever spots.
I would think we should be set at the offensive line unless there is a stud out there somewhere. I believe we have a lot of young talented kids on the roster right now that should do the job.
Would we look for a "Clive Lowe" clone for depth, behind Bobo etc?
Any ideas who will start for us in the secondary next year. I could picture Retorriano??? at one safety spot. But with Fuller likely gone, I do not know who will fill out the rest of spots.
I can see Kramer giving out about 4-6 scholarships to JUCO transfers and use the rest on high school students.

I believe he is waiting to see if he is convicted - he hasn't gone to trial yet. Innocent until proven guilty, eh Wyo?WyomingGrizFan wrote:Only 'likely' gone; well, I guess that's how it goes over there. Who knows, with time off for 'good behavior?'But with Fuller likely gone,

Granted, I fully acknowledge that affirmation of civil liberties, and with the cost to the State I would assume a case would not go to trial unless there is strong evidence to support the District Attorney with his prosecution of that case. Otherwise the DA would be just wasting everybody's time & money, now wouldn't he? Ideals are good to have, especially when they're principled, but that really doesn't preclude the fact that 'The State' has a right to defend itself. The 'General Will' is the 'Will of the citizen' comes to mind, something by Rousseau I believe, 'Sovereignty of the Body Politic' and all that that allows innocence until proven otherwise.
But I really don't think I was out of line with the word 'likely' emphasized and the attendant assumption of what that entails if more so than a mere 'likely,' subsequently a hypothetical statement reflecting the 'likely' result.

I agree that you were not out of like with the likely emphasis. Irritation may stem from the wiseass "that's how it goes over there" remark. Once again, a Griz fan implying that Bozeman and/or the MSU football program looks like "New Jack City". I'm amazed that martial law hasn't been imposed, as the entire football team is running amok with Coach Kramer's blessing. Ridiculous.WyomingGrizFan wrote:Granted, I fully acknowledge that affirmation of civil liberties, and with the cost to the State I would assume a case would not go to trial unless there is strong evidence to support the District Attorney with his prosecution of that case. Re: Featherston
I know I will get flamed on this board for saying this, cause you guys, as usual, will just call me an arrogant Griz fan, but I believe we get a lot of Montana kids right now due to the Griz tradition built over the last 20 years, 14 straight playoffs, too many BSC titles to count, 2 national champs, the best stadium in 1-AA, etc.Hell's Bells wrote:UMLawCat wrote:Cats offered Featherston a full and griz offered him a half...and he said one of the reasons he wanted to go to the griz, is b/c they wanted him to red shirt, but the Cats wanted him to play special teams right away.

I know someone who coaches football in Minnesota. He had not been to a game in Wa-Griz for over 10 years. Due to a funeral he had to come back to Missoula the week of the Semifinal, so he went with a friend to the game. He is not a Griz fan or a Cat fan, but the next day his comment was, "With that stadium and that game atmosphere, how does MSU get any of the good in state kids?" I tend to agree. I know those kind of comments make Cat fans mad, and you think your Game day atmosphere compares to UM, but it just doesn't. Whether you want to believe it or not, a lot of kids just want to go play in the environment at Wa-Griz. If saying that makes me an arrogant Griz fan, so sorry!!

I would have to agree that the CATS have to work to do before our GAME DAY can compete with the griz. No doubt the griz have performed well, they've also had some very lucky breaks (Dennis Washington being the main one).
Still, when you boil it all down - MSU does have a decent game day environment (getting better every year), solid academics (I would agrue stronger than the griz) and a program on the upswing. If I were not well to do (which I wasn't when I started college) it would have been a no-brainer - I would have taken the full and MSU's up and coming program over the griz - any time!
