Is Kramer Staying a Good Thing?

Post by The Butcher » Fri Dec 15, 2006 3:31 pm

After this week’s firestorm dealing with Bobcat Athletics I was left wondering, “Is MSU Athletics better off with Kramer staying or worse off?”

I would love to hear some feedback from both sides, and I don’t want people to start blasting each other because they disagree.

I vote Yay!

I like his work!
I am not naive, he can be an ass but that is what preassure does to college coaches!
I don't blame him for the player problems, that is not a phenomenon unique to Montana State University.

One thing, if other jobs (Air Force could start another dominoe effect) open up he and Hauck may be in line for positions there so, this may not be over.

I am still a little uneasy about the problems that have taken place under Kramers tenure.

We've had a coach sell drugs, a player sell drugs, some ex-players sell drugs, ex-players involved in a murder. ALL while Kramer has been head coach.

I don't know if I can blame him, but I don't think I can look the other way.

I think Coach Kramer's staying is the best the could happen. Oh thank you Santa!!!!

I do not think that we can hold the coach responsible for actions of players who were dismissed from the team, not even his players (b-ball players) or for actions that were taken during the off season (fuller).

If Fuller's alleged drug sale happened during football season or during practice season then one could (in my opionion) possibly ask for the coach to explain how this could happen.

While I agree that it makes all of us look bad, I will not blame the coach for these actions.

I'm a Kramer homer, and in no way do I associate the off-season actions of a few with the overall integrity he brings to work every day.

Thanks Krames for making my week.

Kramer staying is the best news all week. In no way do I place blame for the stupid actions of a current player and a couple former players on Kramer. I feel it's even more ludicrous to blame Kramer for the stupid action of a former assistant coach.

I was not at all looking forward to a coaching change and look forward to a great year and a great future for Bobcat football under Mike Kramer.

Go Cats!!

I am glad he is staying, however knowing that he will continue to look at some point I would like to see an effort to bring in an assistant to groom to be the next HC. i would like that from a level of stability it could bring to the program.

I'm somewhat surprised that there are 7 "no" votes already. My other thought on this poll is, It would completely depend on who his replacement was. If it were Glanville - I may be included to say I'd prefer him over Kramer...

Anyone can vote.......they could easily be votes from the 'dark pink' side.

No doubt there a few 'alleged' Cat fans that would vote that way, but as my dear departed Dad used to say, "some folks would bitch if they were hung with a new rope".

I am glad Kramer is staying. He knows this team and where they can go. I did however like the replacements we had for him. Kramer has a lot of work to do and this won't be easy for him to do. Keep this team together and rolling Kramer and MSU will take care of you.

Does this mean Kramer is going to sign a 3 year deal and stay around for a while or was Idaho just a poor place to go?

I really can't see Kramer getting a head coaching job at any I-A school other than Idaho at this point unless he wins a national championship in the next couple years. I also doubt Fields will offer him a 3-year contract at this time given all that has happened, but we'll see...

He should stay; anyone familiar with the thugs Glanville coached and the penalties his teams received? Made the out of control Miami teams look like choir boys, but after all, it is football

I have mixed feelings about Coach Kramer staying as head football coach. I do not hold Kramer responsible for the conduct of the players or coaches off the field. I don’t think he can baby sit them or run their lives outside of football. People have free will and this is a free country. I do believe, however, that the coach is responsible for how the players conduct themselves on the field. We can only ask that he keep that respectable.

Like it or not collegiate athletics is a business, at least football and basketball are. Coaches make their living and move up the food chain by winning games. Coaches put the athletes on the field that they think can help them win games. Coaches talk a lot about molding young men into good people and making good decisions but for the most part it’s a lot of hot air. Show me a coach that wouldn’t recruit Randy Moss because of off field problems. They may kick him off the team eventually when they are forced to but he will just go down the road to the next coach. Even the great Don James recruited some real losers that were great football players.

Any university that offers scholarships to athletes and has boosters that pressure the coach to win is susceptible to these problems. This is not a problem unique at MSU or ISU, it just happens to be our turn in the barrel. It does and always has pissed me off when people from this board talk about the trouble makers that Rick Neheisal and Dennis Ericson recruit. Hopefully, the bobcatnation has learned this lesson.

I am of the (small) camp that believes we can do better than Kramer, not because of morals or ethics but pure coaching ability. I know everyone here on this board just loves the guy. I realize Coach Kramer is a fantastic recruiter and he is a tireless promoter of bobcat football and I love him for it. I also think if Kramer were the UM coach and Hauck were the MSU coach we wouldn’t stand a chance in the Cat/Griz game.

Please don’t get me wrong here; I think Kramer is a great 7-5 or 8-4 coach. I do not see him keeping a team focused enough to pull off a 9-2 or 10-1 season. He will get you the occasional big win and the embarrassing loss. Our offense this year had way too much talent to be as streaky as they were.

I may be all wet here, it’s just my opinion.

Yes, I think it is great that Kramer is staying. That should help recruiting and Kramer is about as good an abassador as you can ever find. However, I wish there had been a change this year. Kramer has not hired the best assistants and the turnover amoung his coaches has been a little high. I guess I just wanted a change. Kramer has brought the program back to the top of the BSC and he should be commended. I feel he has done the best he can and maybe someone else can help us take the next step.

Then again, someone new could send us back into the tank.

So, his National Runner up EWU team that had a 12 win season was a complete fluke??

I think not. At the end of the day THE PLAYERS play it out on the field, and THE PLAYERS win the game. The coaching is there, execution is not. This year, Rolo/Carpenter simply made too many mistakes and our recievers dropped too many balls to have a 10+ win season. Add to that our "walking wounded" RB corps, and I think we did quite well this season to win 8 games.

If we can keep everyone on O relatively healthy, the offense should score better, because we will have more continuity. I don't even think Kramer needs to go out and get a X-fer reciever. Between Lewis, Tolliver, Lulay, Green, and some of the younger reicievers, we should be fine there. O-line will be fine, with the core mostly back (sans Hirst), and both QB's and RB's back.

Then on to D. With the unfortunate events of last week, we get weaker in the secondary, which was the weakest returning part of our D (with Force, LeBlanc, Henderson graduating). Beach may start as one of the corners, instead of the nickelback. The rest of the D will be fine.

I'll quit rambling now...
