What say you?? From the names that are being thrown around today I vote Van Diest.

I would hope that we have some higher-profile guys at least on the radar...

Horrible choices---none of the above. Only 1 has D1 head coaching experience and he inherited a good program. Hasn't proven he can stay at that level.

Like who??? I have not seen much talk of other names. I Just wrote down name that are on the board and are being talked about. I would like it if there was a higher profile name also but I just don't know where we could find one. That is why I am not AD.

I think a lot of our posts today show why none of us are athletic directors (me being at the top of that list).

I, too, hope that Fields has a much better short list in mind.

Sorry, but I have to vote other as well. I definitely believe there has to be better candidates.

Most people are only talking about the people they have some familiarity with. Here is my short list:

Steve Spurrier
Pete Carroll
Lou Holtz
Bobby Bowden

On a more serious note - I hope we have some great candidates on the short list, but I do agree it will be tough attracting a bright star with the given salary...

Well, if that's the way you want it - here's my list:

Urban Meyer
Jim Tressel
Rich Rodriquiz
Lloyd Carr

How about Nick Saban. Do you think MSU is Alabama? How high of a profile do you guys really think we can get here. Plus high profile guys like D. Erickson would leave after a year. Give some names if you think there are others out there. Van Diest could coach at any level. He has coached at every college level. What kind of coach are you guys looking for?

BOB GREEN. There is noone else on the list that would make me want to listen to the postgame, more than the actual game. God I love that man.

your serious note is RIGHT ON - there are high school coaches in Texas that make almost double what Kramer makes - if we want to attract and keep good talent we need to get serious about some salary increases and get more flexibility from the Board of Regents - three years is a good start but we (and the griz) are way behind.

On that note ... I was told the other day that the high school football coach at De La Salle (the team that didn't lose for 10 years) makes over $400K per year ... almost all funded by the booster club.

This was told to me by a guy whose kids go there.

It's off-topic, but maybe good for context.

Also, I am not getting into the name-dropping game for two reasons: 1) There has been no official announcement on this yet. We are all running about like little children who lost their candy; and 2) I am still not sold on the fact that Coach K wants to go to Idaho. I really, truly believe he feels we have a job to do in 2007 and he wants to be stick around and be part of something special next year. We have the best crop of returners since I have been following the Cats in the early 80s.

By TIM DUMAS Chronicle Sports Writer

When asked if he had an interview scheduled, Kramer replied, "No, I do not."

Kramer did say that he is interested in the Idaho job, but that the school "hasn't outlined its process yet."

You are probably right. Why would any coach want to leave MSU. With all the money he makes here why would he want more. No coach ever leaves to coach at his alma mater or move closer to home. Kramer isn't going anywhere so there is no reason to drop names and hope that something gets done soon. :?

I don't see any harm in speculating, though. It's not like people are slighting Kramer when discussing the other potential names ... and it's not like there is any secret that Kramer at least MIGHT be leaving.

And I have to say that this brainstorming session has been really interesting and educational to read for me personally.

I wouldn't say that Wulff inherited a good program. Kramer left it good, but he didn't have much talent when he got there (I know because I was going to school there). Wulff has done good at get some great homegrown kids and making them solid players much like Kramer has done here at MT.
