Players aren’t going to suddenly swarm to OSU because they hired a new coach. They’d swarm there if that coach turned the program around. I get wanting the new coach there ASAP, but this portal is going to be the least important of his career at OSUProdigal Cat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:54 pmForfeiting years of loyalty and character in a coach for 1 month. 1 damn month.CalgaryCat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:50 pmThat’s all well and good in the short term, but you’ll get mercenary coaches who will happily use you as their next step regardless of how it affects the program in the future.catatac wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:48 pmTotally agree. I for one am hoping that Lane kiffen at Ole Miss says yes to the 14m a year and stays. Florida pilled the plug so it is LSU and maybe Penn ST? This doesn't have much to do with BV, but it would reinforce that sometimes loyalty matters. Ole Miss has a shot at a title just like the Bobcats, we should know tonight anyway if Lane stays through the playoffs, stays for next year, or jumps ship.Prodigal Cat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:54 pmForfeiting years of loyalty and character in a coach for 1 month. North Texas coach is going to Oklahoma State next year. Coaching today and sounds like at least in their conference championship. They have a chance to be in playoffs. Sounds like that OSU knows if you got your guy you work with them. It's mot like either OSU is going to the playoffs next year regardless who they hire.catatac wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:48 pmTotally agree. If they’re good enough to build the program to where a better team wants them, that’s a win-win. There aren’t any lifer coaches unless you’re at one of the top programs where you’re liable to get fired for any drop.CalgaryCat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:50 pmThat’s all well and good in the short term, but you’ll get mercenary coaches who will happily use you as their next step regardless of how it affects the program in the future.catatac wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:48 pmTotally agree. Look at it this way. If Vigen went 8-4 the next 2 years, there would be a ton of talk about canning him, and rightfully so. The coaches aren’t the only “mercenaries” out there.

Yeah CFP is cut throat, but at this point he’s earned a nice contract at MSU that may even get better this offseason. If he did drop off and get canned, his loyalty had earned him a nice payoff from the extended contract.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 4:51 pmIf they’re good enough to build the program to where a better team wants them, that’s a win-win. That might not be a bad idea, if the players were signed to four or five year contracts at their schools. Currently, most schollys are year to year. The players could enter the portal to transfer, but gaining teams would have to buy out their remaining contracts. That buy out fee would be lower each year left on the contract, kind of like how the coaches contracts work.vike_king wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 5:32 pmYupCalgaryCat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:30 pmSounds a lot better than the current “nothing” the team losing the player currently gets.JoeCatsJoe wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:20 pmPerhaps a solution would be when a player transfers up/across, the team getting the player pays the price of a scholly to the team losing a player. It sure would move us one step closer to professional sports, unfortunately. But I think programs like MSU need to be compensated for the development they put into the athletes they recruit. Might slow the roll on the insane NIL deals and player movement we see, if there are additional costs involved. Might help correct the market.nanacat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 6:13 pmHow hard would it be to implement something like that?AFCAT wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 6:03 pmThat might not be a bad idea, if the players were signed to four or five year contracts at their schools. Nothing to stop a booster writing NIL checks from doing it either.
They don’t WANT to make those offers because then can’t cut kids.

I don't see why you couldn't cut kids, would just need to insert buyout clauses into the NIL contracts like the coaches have in case they leave or are fired prior to the contract ending.onceacat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 9:47 pmThere’s nothing prohibiting schools from offering a 4-5 year scholarship that would come with buyout type provisions.vike_king wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 5:32 pmYupCalgaryCat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:30 pmSounds a lot better than the current “nothing” the team losing the player currently gets.JoeCatsJoe wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:20 pmPerhaps a solution would be when a player transfers up/across, the team getting the player pays the price of a scholly to the team losing a player. Plus I would think we probably lose a lot more guys to transferring out than we cut so it would still be a net benefit.MSU01 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 10:18 pmI don't see why you couldn't cut kids, would just need to insert buyout clauses into the NIL contracts like the coaches have in case they leave or are fired prior to the contract ending.onceacat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 9:47 pmThere’s nothing prohibiting schools from offering a 4-5 year scholarship that would come with buyout type provisions.vike_king wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 5:32 pmYupCalgaryCat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:30 pmSounds a lot better than the current “nothing” the team losing the player currently gets.JoeCatsJoe wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:20 pmPerhaps a solution would be when a player transfers up/across, the team getting the player pays the price of a scholly to the team losing a player. Its probably a net benefit to MSU...I'm thinking more holistically and theres a lot of history that goes into where the current situation is:coloradocat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 10:20 pmPlus I would think we probably lose a lot more guys to transferring out than we cut so it would still be a net benefit.MSU01 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 10:18 pmI don't see why you couldn't cut kids, would just need to insert buyout clauses into the NIL contracts like the coaches have in case they leave or are fired prior to the contract ending.onceacat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 9:47 pmThere’s nothing prohibiting schools from offering a 4-5 year scholarship that would come with buyout type provisions.vike_king wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 5:32 pmYupCalgaryCat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:30 pmSounds a lot better than the current “nothing” the team losing the player currently gets.JoeCatsJoe wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:20 pmPerhaps a solution would be when a player transfers up/across, the team getting the player pays the price of a scholly to the team losing a player. For years, the NCAA prohibited 4 and 5 year guaranteed scholarships-mostly so that schools could cut kids who got injured. Now, a handful of schools offer them...it's problematic for the lower tier because things get complicated. Does a player lose his scholarship if he suffers a career ending injury? Most NFL players have some level of protection against that, and have some degree of guarantee built into their contracts. Lots of schools don't want to take on that risk.
Also, if a student is under a 4 year contract, hes much more likely to be considered an employee & subject to employee protections like work comp & union representation than if the student is on a year to year "scholarship".
Of course, I think MSU has benefitted a lot from the transfer situation because MSU has been able to recruit elite level FBS players who use MSU as a farm system to get better & then transfer out. Obviously a two edged sword for MSU. If you included some sort of buyout clause, would guys like Ifanse or Omar come here? Maybe, maybe not.
All that said, anything at all is better than what the NCAA is doing right now: No salary cap & every single athlete is a free agent every single season. Pro sports leagues (and let's face it, NCAA football has 100% turned into a pro sports league) need rules in place to make competition work well.
4-5 year contracts...er um I totally mean SCHOLARSHIPS (because using the word contracts would require us all to recognize reality & lots of us prefer living in a fantasy land where sports is somehow tangentially related to academics) would probably help the overall situation, but it would open up a ton of other issues.

Those are some thoughtful points. Of course, it’s also difficult to actually determine who is transferring for playing time or transferring “across”. Think of guys like Wing and Wortham for the Gris, that was pretty clearly a transfer across that had nothing to do with playing time. Not every case would be that easy.onceacat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 11:09 pmIts probably a net benefit to MSU...I'm thinking more holistically and theres a lot of history that goes into where the current situation is:coloradocat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 10:20 pmPlus I would think we probably lose a lot more guys to transferring out than we cut so it would still be a net benefit.MSU01 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 10:18 pmI don't see why you couldn't cut kids, would just need to insert buyout clauses into the NIL contracts like the coaches have in case they leave or are fired prior to the contract ending.onceacat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 9:47 pmThere’s nothing prohibiting schools from offering a 4-5 year scholarship that would come with buyout type provisions.vike_king wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 5:32 pmYupCalgaryCat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:30 pmSounds a lot better than the current “nothing” the team losing the player currently gets.JoeCatsJoe wrote: ↑Fri Nov 28, 2025 2:20 pmPerhaps a solution would be when a player transfers up/across, the team getting the player pays the price of a scholly to the team losing a player.
