From what I’ve always heard in the past, Regular season attendance includes absolutely every warm body inside the stadium, including players, refs, chain gang, concession workers, etc.
That’s how we’re able to get 4k+ above our seating capacity.

Playoff attendance is either actual tickets sold or people through the gate, I don’t remember which. But it doesn’t include all of those other people.

That’s why we can have a sold out playoff game and every seat is packed and the SRO hill packed but only hit 20k attendance or whatever our official number has been.
This is exactly right

1996 team won BSC went to the big dance. That team was full of Montana boys, including Scott Hatler, Adam Leachman, and Danny Sullivan. There were probably other Montana boys, but those are the ones I can recall. Great team and an historic year!

lol, I forgot Danny Sprinkle, and I believe he was the MVP of the Big Sky that year. He returned to MSU a few years back as the men’s basketball coach.

Yep, and that's back before MSU became a football school, and before the state of Montana transitioned to a football state. All of the good HS athletes in the state today are playing football, because that's where they have the greatest chance to turn their athletic talent into a partial or full ride college scholarship (NCAA or NAIA). Also, it's where they have the best chance to play meaningful games that matter (playoffs). College Basketball just doesn't pack the same punch as college football does, and it's been like that for some time. NIL and the portal have made it even worse. MSU MBB and the rest of the teams in the BSC - and in similar low-major conferences - will continue to struggle to remain relevant given the current state of college athletics.

Think about it; MSU had likely the greatest run in it's history under Danny Sprinkle - just before NIL and the portal took off - and that's now a distant memory. The chances of that happening again anytime soon are slim to none when the best players leave for greener pasture (err greener wallets) every season.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Even with that fantastic and fun run with Sprinkle, we won a total of ZERO tournament games. For me, it’s hard to get super into a sport where we literally have no chance of ever being relevant on any kind of consistent basis. The absolute best we can get is a magical Sweet 16 run once every 25 years. And actually, that hasn’t happened yet, so that might be a generous timeline.

I would disagree with the statement that all good players are playing football for scholarships. Most high schoolers play what they like Best. Scholarships might factor in when they are seniors.

Not quite sure how this thread turned to discussing basketball attendance, but here we are. I think it's pretty simple, the university has successfully turned football games into a day-long event that students and older fans alike want to be a part of even if they're not necessarily big football fans. Basketball games don't have that excitement surrounding them for whatever reason even when the teams are good, so students don't come. It has nothing to do with which states the players come from.

Cats were relevant in Big Sky just like women Cat BB are now. Tough conference games, Big Sky tourney are exciting. Then a fun first round where you hope for an upset. 2 weekends of tourney fun. Not much different than playoff games. I think main difference is the atmosphere around home games has become an event and you don't have that with other sports

Probably a place for separate discussion, but I would sure like to hear the horror stories of what does not pan out and promised NIL money. I’ve heard small details on just a few.

Like you mentioned, not quite sure how this turned into a basketball thread. However, I would argue that it does matter what states the players come from. I think there needs to be a balance. I and several friends differ from your opinion on where players come from. I have absolutely no interest in MSU men’s basketball when there are no players from Montana on the roster Participating. Just my personal view.
When it comes to Cat/griz football, I also believe it’s important because it is a main subject from both schools every year about how many players are from the state of Montana. I appreciate the out of state players that contribute and many of them eventually become permanent Montana residence.
And with that I will stop hijacking this particular thread!

Maybe it didn't come across well in my post, but I was referring more to student attendance at basketball games and why they'll show up in the thousands to attend football games while the student section for basketball is mostly empty. I highly doubt that students are inspecting the team rosters to see where the players come from when deciding whether or not to attend. Hopefully MSU's new Montana player Seth Amunrud will have a great season and start to bring back some fans like yourself!

At least being a Montana kid, if he did have a great freshman season, he'd be somewhat less likely to chase a bag of NIL money...

Amunrud is a junior and already played two seasons for Dawson CC, although you're likely correct regarding the NIL stuff. We've seen with the football team that while there are no guarantees, players from Montana do appear to be likelier to stay for their entire careers.

Jimmy Fallon kinda looks like Steve Nash. Nash is from Canada the birthplace of basketball.

I'm thinking the plan must be to install a basketball court when the East side stands are redone. Outside practice facility maybe???

Can't make up my mind as to which is better - 55-21 or 48-14, but 34-11 will do.
