I actually meant to add an amendment to this after talking this out with Montana State sports information.
Tommy Mellott currently is credited with 26 "starter" wins. He also should get credit for two more wins that he finished.
The Montana State record is 30 wins by DeNarius McGhee. He broke Paul Dennehy's previous school record in 2012 against Sac State.
Vernon Adams went 28-6 at Eastern Washington. I credited him with 35 wins off the cuff, which is correct for career wins, but he went 7-3 at Oregon.
Dave Dickenson has the Big Sky record 33 wins, including the playoffs.
PS - the fact that Tommy played key roles as a special teams player, back up linebacker, receiver, Wildcat quarterback....even when he wasn't the starting quarterback...means there should be an amendment to this category...Still, if he and the Bobcats win out, he'll tie McGhee's school record. He could beat beat Dickenson if Montana State run the table all the way through Frisco....
Thanks for setting everything straight. Do you happen to know what the career records of Tommy and DeNarius are? I believe at one point Tommy had never lost a game that he both started and finished so he can't have many losses at this point, although if we lose after he goes out that counts against him, which is probably a majority of his losses.
DeNarius McGhee was 30-7 as a starter and would've had more wins (and losses) had he not missed time as a senior.
Tommy Mellott won the first 17 games he started AND finished in his career and is 25-3 overall in those scenarios. He has won 26 games and lost six games that he started, although he did not finish three of those.
@Colter_Nuanez @TomCat88
Denarious was 30-7 after his Junior year, he won 6 more games in 2013, so it's really 36 wins. Note that roster bio was completed going into his senior season.
https://msubobcats.com/sports/football/ ... cghee/2072
Thanks 4kk. That explains the discrepancy. 36 wins is going to hold up for a long time. Special player.
It might, but it might not. Vigen has 40 wins halfway through his 4th season. If they are able to hold on to him and the momentum, and if the FCS divide continues to widen, I could see this falling in the next few years.
For example, if Chance Wilson is the future, and starts the next three years, and they only lose 1 regular season game, that puts him at 30-33 wins depending on if they play 11 or 12. A few playoff wins puts him right in that window. Denarious was incredible at the time, but put him on the current team with the current staff and he's easily over 40 wins, those teams never really made deep playoff runs.
The new redshirt rules change that too. A guy can easily play 5 FULL seasons now (4 regular season plus the playoffs, potentially 9 games). 40 wins only translates into 8 wins per season. And the NCAA has become much more lenient on medical redshirts. AND FCS has become so watered down & uncompetitive.
So an incoming star in the right circumstances (think if Tommy hadn't played in so many games as a gadget player in 2021) could easily play in 60-70 games over their college career. (Imagine if theres another 2020 covid season) Frankly, 40 wins in a career doesn't look that impressive given the new landscape of college football.

Mellott went over 3,000 rushing. Fourth player in MSU history to do that.

Blows my mind that three of the top four (two tied for third place) players for career rushing TDs did it primarily from the QB position. Yes, I know, Troy had some as a RB.

Getting close, the top 10 starts around 90 points (ish), so they are like 15/20 points away. I was gonna add that list after next week when they get closer to breaking into the top 10.

Cool! I thought Sansted was at 66 last week, so he should be 72 now or something like that. And thanks for all you do with the list.

Keaton mentioned a very cool stat last night at Cat Chat, which is that Tommy passed both Don Hass and Steve Kracher in career rushing AND also went over 3,000 career rushing yards on the same play, his long TD run in the 3rd quarter.
I've brought this one up before but I still find it amazing that Vigen is now tied with Cliff Hysell for #3 in all-time coaching wins without even being through four full seasons yet. We as fans are very lucky right now!

Sac state updates....... holy crap that was a dominating win. couple notes:
-added the top 10 scoring in a season list, couple players getting close
-added the top 10 team rushing yards in a game, 508... unreal.
-Cats are averaging over 7 YPC again this year.
-7 rushing TD's, that is tied for 1st place, most team rushing TD's in a single game.
-Tommy went over 8,000 Total Offense career yards.
10-0!!!!!!!!

@TomCat88
This is random- But I have read a bunch of write-ups from the sac state game and/or people tweeting (like yerself) saying the 7 rushing TD’s was a new program record…
I’m pretty sure last year they had 7 rushing TD’s against Utah tech. So this last games rushing number would tie the record….
Maybe I’m wrong though?

-Taco is now tied for 2nd all time for career Punt Return TD's with 3. And is closing in on the punt return yard records for both a season and career.

Didn't Bergen just get the BSC TD punt return record with 6? Taco has 3 but how many of them were conference? Has a shot for sure.

Does the record only count conference TDs. I don't believe other records only count conference games.
Taco has 1 PR TD in conference play. His other two TDs were in a non-conference game and in the playoffs.

Taco will easily be the best punt returner in Bobcat history if he stays healthy.

So, Adam Jones in one season has two of the four longest runs in Bobcat history.
