Exactly. We were almost exclusively in nickel. Okada was the nickel back and was manned up against JML almost the entire game and did a great job. Okada looked quick and a sure tackler.Cataholic wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2019 11:43 amI had mentioned the same thing earlier. Whether he was LB or S, he assumed Troy’s role on the defense with his speed. Troy will play a lot of coverage and can minimize an opponents speed. I thought Okada was asked to do the same things and was a brilliant replacement by Ioane.allcat wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2019 10:07 amI just did not see him much before, also I saw him start plays at the linebacker level. It just stood out to me when he made several plays.

R. J. Fitzgerald, every time one of our backs had a break away run you can just about guarantee he had a good block. Dude is a blocking machine, I hope the coaches reward him one of these upcoming games by letting him pack the brick.

Re: Unsung Heroes
The Cats have been playing a lot of base against 11 personnel because Troy can cover the slot receiver. Against the Griz, the Bobcats played a lot of nickel with Okada on JLM. So Okada was playing for Troy in the sense of taking his responsibility for the slot receiver in man-under and/or the underneath zones. Hairy Louie-McGee had like five yards a catch, which tells you all you need to know about how Okada looked as the nickel safety. Obviously Okada gives up a lot of size and strength in the running game compared to Troy. Nevertheless, I thought he played will against the run, too.
I think Okada has a bright future with the Bobcats.

JLM is a pretty dynamic player, but the Cats have held him in check in all 4 games
2017 is his best year by far against the Cats
He will graduate 0-4 and never scored against the Cats
2016
6-29 receiving
no punt returns
2017
8-95 receiving
3-22 punt returns
3-97 ko returns
2018
2-16 receiving
1-7 punt returns
2019
7-36 receiving
no punt returns

Re: Unsung Heroes
Hauck is a bit of a special teams guru, I have always especially been impresses with his kickoff returns
Flowers was 5-119 for an average return of 23.8, and this includes one return of 60 yards
the other 4 returns went for 59 yards for an average of 14.8
Special teams really stepped up and deserve some props especially when you see above that JLM had a goose egg for punt returns

MSU had the 60 yarder stopped, but Flowers was able to get out of it. Good play by him.cats2506 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 9:51 amHauck is a bit of a special teams guru, I have always especially been impresses with his kickoff returns

Re: Unsung Heroes
If I'm remembering correctly, Choate basically covered JLM man-to-man with a quick footed nickel back who is a sure tackler in open space, and that pretty shut him down. Bignell in 2016, JCole in '17 and '18, and Okada this year. And obviously Padmos has done a great job, pretty much his entire career, in limiting punt return yards.cats2506 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 9:39 amJLM is a pretty dynamic player, but the Cats have held him in check in all 4 games

Yeah, it looked like he was done but bounced out of it.iaafan wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 9:54 amMSU had the 60 yarder stopped, but Flowers was able to get out of it. I credit the good put return teams right now to #10, he has done really well as the primary gunner. he is fast and is a pretty damn good tackler for a former QB and current WR. I would think that his stats on punt teams may have been what tipped the scales for the Multi-purpose 1st team player
I think that is a role he plays that is often overlooked

yeah, we had it all wadded up inside, but just didn't get him to the ground and he made a nice play getting to the outside.....were he was helped out by a block in the back by #35.cats2506 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 10:01 amYeah, it looked like he was done but bounced out of it.iaafan wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 9:54 amMSU had the 60 yarder stopped, but Flowers was able to get out of it. Kane Ioane. Since the SS game, the defense has been lights out. The tackling last Saturday was the best of the season. IMO. Griz just could not get anything going.
