It’s based on a computer algorithm. Teams basically start where last season ended up, so Sac had a HUGE hole to dig out of. Plus, it’s cumulative, so you never see big swings week to week. It takes a while for the computers to spot stories like Sac. Also, stories like UCD and EWU.

And if a team that a um beat goes on and continues to win In later weeks, that initial win looks better and better.
So in this case I believe the majority of teams the griz have already played this season also won this weekend, effectively helping the griz rating as well.

The ranking and the strength of schedule ONLY include DI games. So Sac's State's game against Southern Oregon (77-19) does NOT count which means they have one less game to go into the algorithm. Here is quote from Sagarin: "In COLLEGE FOOTBALL the W-L records include ALL games, but ONLY games between the 256 TEAMS RATED here are used for RATING and SCHEDULE STRENGTH computations." This means Sac State has one less win and game in the mix. They will pull ahead if they keep winning because their SOS is quite a bit better than UM or MSU (Sac - 113; UM - 133; MSU - 165). Whether you believe Sagarin's SOS algorithm or not, it is part of the formula for the rank.

I realize that the playoff field isn’t picked from these rankings, but it’s interesting to see both EWU and UCD so high in these rankings with 5 losses right now. In theory, they could both win out and be in the top 10 in the Sagarin Rankings and be at home watching the playoffs.
I don’t see either one getting in at 7-5, although UCD would probably have the best shot, if they won out that would mean back to back wins against MSU and Sac St to finish the season.

If the playoffs were picked via the Sagarin Rankings, this is what they’d look like.
It’ll be interesting to see how reality matches up with this:

The Seeds:
1. NDSU
2. JMU
3. South Dakota State
4. UM
5. Weber
6. Sac St
7. MSU
8. Northern Iowa

The rest, in order:
Eastern Washington
Wofford
Villanova
Towson
Southern Illinois
UC Davis
SE Louisiana
Furman
Illinois St
Monmouth
New Hampshire
South Dakota
Nicholls State
Austin Peay
Albany
Maine

It’s really interesting to see EWU so high here. They’re officially on the bubble, and most assume they’re not in (myself included), but they could be a surprise 5th Big Sky team.

I can't imagine that they'd award 4 of the 8 seeds to BSC teams, even if they're legitimately deserving of that many (and I think they may be). I could see them getting 3 seeds though, with UM the odd man out. I think Sac and WSU are deserving of being seeded ahead of us, since they tied for the title, and Sac beat us easily. If they give the BSC a 3rd seed, we'd have to get the nod over UM, after the beatdown we gave them yesterday. I believe the BSC got 3 seeds last year...right?

I'd say there's almost no way the Big Sky doesn't get 4 seeds today, especially after the carnage yesterday. If SDSU and ISU and others hadn't lost then maybe, but don't think they have 8 teams to reasonably put in front of UM.
