Re: Coaching candidates
This is a bit off topic but I found this information on Gary Hulst. He was the Bobcat coach for three seasons (1969-1972). He did quite well in DII.

Re: Coaching candidates
Are we sure about the above names? I have heard (I know it’s all rumors but for what it’s worth) that Hill is not involved and that Purdue’s Steve Lutz IS interviewing.Helcat72 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 2:54 pmDanny Sprinkle. Ex Bobcat star guard asst at Cal Fullerton.
Andy Hill — Hill has worked for former University of Montana Hall of Fame player and head coach Larry Krystkowiak over the last eight seasons at the University of Utah.
Jono Metzger-Jones — The current UC Davis assistant spent five seasons as an assistant at the University of Montana, the first three working for Wayne Tinkle and the last two working for current Griz head coach Travis DeCuire.
Jim Shaw — Shaw, an All-American at Western Oregon in 1985, is now in his fourth season as the head coach at his alma mater. But his first coaching job came in the Big Sky Conference back in 1986.
Ryan Looney — Looney’s Point Loma Nazarene school earned the No. 1 seed in the Division II West Regional on the way to winning the regional title. The 29-4 Sea Lions will face Queens (New York) in the NCAA Division II national tournament on Wednesday night.

Re: Coaching candidates
Like wise mid week I had head Jono Metzger Jones did not make the final 5 but Ben McCollum of Northwest Missouri state was on the to be interviewed in Bozeman short list. At the time I thought Coulter seems to get these ting right and went with it.Willneal wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 7:36 amAre we sure about the above names? Re: Coaching candidates
There is certainly no guarantee that success at the DII level will translate to DI. However, I do think the likelihood of success is higher for a proven head coach than for an assistant. If I was equally impressed by the interviews, I would lean towards the proven head coach.

Will they fly to Bozeman together for interviews after the game? That would be an interesting flight...

Looney is 69-27 in three years at Point Loma and maybe a D-2 national championship today
Apparently Hommes is an NBA prospect and might be a grad transfer next year

Re: Coaching candidates
Did anyone else watch Point Loma's semifinal game? 10 assists on 27 made baskets. Only three players had assists, and only three assists came from other than the point guard position. A lot of one-on-one play. Maybe the defense dictated that? I'd like to know what you all thought. There are many of you far more expert in the game than I am.

Are these Big Sky officials? Pretty questionable calls.Bobcat4Ever wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 1:48 pmDid anyone else watch Point Loma's semifinal game? 10 assists on 27 made baskets. This game reminds me of Duke and VaTech except Daulton Hommes is no Zion Williamson! PL getting torched by 3s. They are 3-13 from 3. Not impressed with Looney's game plan; however, Duke can't shoot 3's very well either. It seems as if when it came down to crunch time he gave the ball to a 6'-8" power forward on the perimeter and said "win this one for us". He may be the player of the year...but it's a team game. Nothing against Hommes, but you need another option!

Re: Coaching candidates
The champion had an undefeated season. Looney coaches that way and always has even at Eastern Oregon. If he could get players to come to Lagrande, Oregon he can get them to Bozeman.

Re: Coaching candidates
I wasn't impressed by Looney's game plan for today's game. Unable to adjust at halftime, relying in hero ball, etc. One or two really good athletes can make you a really big success in D2.
While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

Re: Coaching candidates
I think it was more about NWMSU's defense. They were suffocating. They didn't have any flashy players, but all 5 on the floor were solid in all phases. Their 2nd national title in 3 years and undefeated this season. That's amazing. If that coach is a candidate as Mslacat speculates it would make sense. He's an Iowa guy so maybe Costello knows him? The other possible candidate, Steve Lutz, is an assistant at Purdue-who is leading Virginia by one at halftime in the elite eight.

Re: Coaching candidates
I am hearing from a couple sources that Jim Shaw may have declined an interview with MSU because he is taking an Assistant head coaching job at Washington State

This guy is incredibly impressive. He's turned a basketball team at a football school in the boondocks of Missouri into a powerhouse. https://www.kansascity.com/article228418944.html

Work ethic reminds me of Choate and I like that.

Wow. Sounds like everything you would want in a coach. I hope he is an applicant.BelgradeBobcat wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 8:04 pmThis guy is incredibly impressive.
