Gibb’s standout football season caught the eyes of schools like Montana and Montana State. Admittedly, Gibb said, it’d be fun to remain teammates with Jesse Owens and Trevin Gradney with the Griz. But Gibb has already been accepted to Duke, where he plans to study engineering.

30-21 scouting reports are complete. 20-16 are up with 15-11 coming out tomorrow. Reports for 20-11 will be done by Sunday night so the final 10-1 can be presented 2-per-day from Jan. 28-Feb. 1 with full reports. Don't want to present a player without a report when I roll out the Top 10.

15-11 added. Many of you can probably make a "process of elimination" guess who is in the Top 10.

20-11 reports are up. I overshot my completion date by a few days but its nothing but the Top 10 left. As stated earlier in the week, I won't release the next 10 players without a report attached. Stay tuned!

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
I understand Sampson in the "lock" category because you can about guarantee he will be a starter sooner than later in his career.
I understand Lonergan, Gradney, and Owens as solids though I would take out Olson and Johnson and add Poetzl.
I understand Blake Thelen in that category but explain to me how Garrison Poetzl is a "tweener" as an interior defensive line recruit? He is 6'4", 250 lbs. and can move like a strong-side end. He'll get up to around 280-290 by the time he is a starter. How is that a "tweener?" If anything, Alex Johnson and Joe Olson belong in the tweener category. Alex doesn't have a defined position (the definition of a tweener) and it isn't 100% certain Joe will be fast enough to handle FCS defenses.
Also, Ryan Tirrell isn't even listed and he would definitely be in the "solid" category. UM/MSU each had him in their Top 5 recruits in the state. MSU pushed for him hard even after he committed to UM. He's also a really, really talented LB.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. #10 on my list is dropping this morning.

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
I'm surprised you think Olson may not have the speed - he looks shifty and fast to me on film, certainly faster than your average MT running back. His HUDL page says he runs a 4.5 which is plenty fast at this level.

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
Do you know how many people actually run a 4.5?
Very, very few. I can assure you that Olson is not one of them.

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
Oh I know to take a self-reported 40 with a huge grain of salt. On film he looks fast to me but I really am not good at evaluating anything on HUDL tapes.

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
Just for a fun comparison, Olson's best 100M time in 2018 was 11.44, while Gabe Sulser's was 11.31.

I can't remember why Sulser didn't run the 100 much last year. I know he was focusing more on the 110 Hurdles, which he won at state by a mile. I think he ran 11 flat as a sophomore in the 100 then didn't run it much after that year. Sulser probably would've been in the 10.7 range if he'd have really kept focusing on it.

He did run an 11 flat, his personal best.

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
Valid point CelticCat and its not like I'm trying to say Joe is slow and won't be able to handle quicker defenders at the next level. Joe's strengths are his balance, toughness, and vision mixed with good bursts of speed during runs.
But as far as long speed, use Gunnar Brekke for example. Played at about 5'11", 190-195 lbs. in high school and ran a PR of 11.04 in the 100M dash. Even with that speed, Gunnar did not display consistent run-away ability at the next level. Joe is built similarly and runs in that 11.4-11.5 range. But again, what Joe has going for him is his ability to press the line and explode into runs with a physicality unmatched by his peers in-state. Joe also runs harder than Gunnar in my opinion (in my best Brian Armstrong voice "if that makes sense).

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
IT DOES MAKE SENSE.
Those are valid points. But I think Brekke played closer to 175-180 in high school, whereas Olson is around 195. I think Brekke lost some of his speed putting on the weight to be at every down type back in college, whereas Olson is already there.
Olson may end up packing on 15 pounds and being the next Cody Kirk, but with more speed than Cody ever possessed.

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
Olson would’ve had a shot at 2,300 I think, he was at at 971 yards on 135 carries in 5 games (I took out the 1 carry 3 yard performance in his 6th bame where he broke his arm on the first play from scrimmage). So that’s 194.2 YPG, if we times that by 12 that’s 2,330 yards.

Re: Montana Recruits 2019
There was a distinct possibility that Joe would've broke the record over Blake as Bozeman would've had a better chance to beat Flathead with Joe in the semifinal. It was lining up to be a Sosa/McGuire season-long slugfest for the rushing record. That injury was really too bad because that would've been a great story.CelticCat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 4:03 pmOlson would’ve had a shot at 2,300 I think, he was at at 971 yards on 135 carries in 5 games (I took out the 1 carry 3 yard performance in his 6th bame where he broke his arm on the first play from scrimmage). Counts actually had 1,024 yards in the five games before the Flathead/Bozeman match-up and with his season ending totals, averaged 199.1 y/g. He is extremely impressive to say the least. Without the injury to Olson, the race for the record would have been fun to watch, agreed.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 4:08 pmThere was a distinct possibility that Joe would've broke the record over Blake as Bozeman would've had a better chance to beat Flathead with Joe in the semifinal.
