The Montana University System awards 285 in-state tuition waivers to the top graduating seniors in the state of Montana based on GPA and class rank. This tuition waiver is good at any state school in Montana.

Of the 285 recipients in 2004, 146 are attending MSU, UM has 89, 16 at Tech, 16 in Billings, Western 4, Northern 4, Miles CC 3, Billings COT 1, Great Falls COT 1. (5 were undecided when data was gathered)

Also, the academic profile of an incoming freshman is quite a bit higher at MSU than at UM (UM doesn't even post the pofile of incoming freshman class).

MSU is rightfully known as the best place to receive an undergraduate education in the state. (Aside from journalism, forestry, pharmacy, and probably foreign languages)
I actually don't really agree with your "barometer" as a measure of the actual quality of the schools. The problem is, the schools are completely different from one another, and since neither of these schools is going to be mistaken for Harvard or Stanford anytime soon, intelligent students will choose based on what they want to study, not based on perceived differences in prestige or overall quality.

The fact that more top students are currently choosing MSU reflects the fact that MSU is stronger in hard sciences and tech fields, which are the hot fields to go into right now. Thus, more top students are choosing those fields, and thus choosing MSU.

The last sentence of your post says it all: (paraphrasing for clarity): "MSU is better...except for the fields where UM is better (although you left out a few)."

Also, regarding the average academic profiles of the two schools: I stopped paying attention to this a few years ago, so maybe it is true in very recent years, but historically, I know it is not. When I was in school (1995-2001), I know that the two schools were comparable in that regard (and frankly, neither was particularly impressive); there may have been swings from year to year, but they were not significant. I doubt that there is a huge difference now, but if there is this year, I'm sure it will correct itself over time.

The bottom line is, no matter what anyone from either school says, UM and MSU are of equal status. Montana is not like, say, Michigan, where UMich is decisively better than MSU, and most MSU students would have gone to Ann Arbor had they gotten in. UM and MSU are both decent, albeit not great, state schools, and they are strong in different areas. If anyone seriously thinks that, *overall*, either one is significantly better than the other, they are deluding themselves.

We concede your school, overall, is average at best. We also realize we have the best chemical engineering program not called Rice or MIT as these are the products our products are frequently chosen over, to begin old discussions, what our CPA exam rate is...posted previously, this dead horse doesn't need to be beat anymore. Our students and graduates are among the best in the world, and they continue to contribute for the benefit of mankind.

Funny -- I always thought it was Griz fans who were supposed to be arrogant.

I'm done with this thread; I think all reasonable people reading this know that I've made my point. Goodbye.

"Our schools better than your school".....

Fella's, do you realize how goofy it is to argue over this topic. With no real way to measure or determine the "best", this is really only a good way to get your third gold bobcat next to your name. Que, I know you're hoping Kmax adds a "super" bobcat for those over a thousand posts.

I may only be a 3 gold bobcat, but in my heart I AM A SUPER BOBCAT!

p.s. I am happy that Grizlaw is out of this thread. We should talk s**t about him since he isn't here to protect his reputation!

p.s.s. Montana State Rules and UM Sucks! :x

Cat Grad wrote:What amazes me most about their arrogance is that very few of them today realize that their school was once in the conference that morphed into the PAC-8 and the only win they were able to get on a consistent basis was the little aggie school in the game that used to be played in Butte--and then they're too ignorant, I would assume, to realize the overall record in our series is something like 66-33  That'd be like counting their series record against Western  Kind of embarrassing on their part and makes you pretty proud of the old time Cats that would take them on, and evidently win more than a few times
Somehow I missed this post my first time through the thread. Let me see if I've got this straight:

It's wrong for us to talk smack about "The Streak," because if we do then we're only focusing on the past 20 years and ignoring the years when the Cats were good , and if we talk smack about the entire series record, then THAT'S wrong because we're focusing on years when the Griz were in a higher conference.

So let's see: since the last 20 years can't be discussed, and the period that the two teams were in separate conferences can't be discussed, then I suppose the only portion of the rivalry worth discussing is the years from 1956 through 1984 -- during which, conveniently enough, the Cats won three national titles and probably held an edge in the series. Does that pretty much sum up your logic?

Heh...sorry quast; I'm only out of the academic discussion (although I may weigh back into that one too, if anyone says anything intelligent about it -- I'm just not going to respond to people beating their chests and yelling "my school is better than your school!" anymore).

I will, however, still discuss other topics on the thread. :)

Grizlaw I thought you left this thread? This thread is dedicated to talking smack about you, and that isn’t nearly as fun when you are here…

Both have open admissions policies (i.e. the student bodies at both schools are comparable in terms of intelligence, and pretty much anybody who wants to can get accepted to either school).
Not that I care a lot, but technically UM is a 3rd Tier National University, and MSU is a 4th Tier National University according to US News ranking (for what that is worth). Here is a link, just click on the school and scroll down for US News ranking.

heh..no, no hostility. If I were feeling hostile, I would have wished a far worse fate on you than merely some bird poop on your car -- I probably would have said something like "I hereby condemn you to remain a Bobcat fan for the rest of your life!!!" ;)

I hate to disappoint you, Cat, but I don't think anything anyone has ever said on here has actually gotten me "pizzed" off. I like coming here; it's a good site with some intelligent posters (and some, er, not-so-intelligent ones as well), and I like exchanging viewpoints. When I disagree with something, I argue, but I don't really have an emotional stake in whether or not anyone agrees with me. *shrug*

I am getting a little worried for Grizlaw… I think he might want to become a Cat Fan soon. He is nearing the magical 100 posts mark and he isn’t even 3 months old on bobcatnation. Grizlaw how many posts do you have on egriz? I think you are starting to waiver in your loyalties! :P
