I'm not sure of the

reference, but a lot of bands and musicians use myspace.com to get their work out in the public eye and to network with people who are interested in similar things.

(CBS) It all started on the social networking Web site MySpace.com. A 14-year-old girl began receiving graphic messages from a much older man, asking whether she was "OK with me being 38?"

It wasn't the first time the alleged predator, Robert Wise, trolled the Internet looking for sex, according to Sgt. Dan Krieger of the League City, Texas, police department. But this time, reports CBS News Correspondent Sandra Hughes, the authorities stepped in.

"We assumed her online identity and started chatting with this guy," Krieger explains. "During that point, he made it very clear he wanted to meet her for sex. We were able to find another 14-year-old female that he's actually had sex with."

Wise is now in custody, charged with multiple counts of sexual assault.

But the incident is just one of many cases nationwide — and some of them have ended tragically.

In New Jersey, Majalie Cajuste is grieving the murder of her daughter Judy. The 14-year-old reportedly told friends she met a man in his 20s through MySpace.com.

Across the country, in Northern California, friends are mourning 15-year-old Kayla Reed. She was active on MySpace until the day she disappeared.

Police are investigating possible MySpace connections in both murder cases.

The Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported more than 1,200 incidents last year of adults using the Internet to entice children. With numbers like that, you'd think parents would be hovering over their kids, wanting to know what they're doing online. But authorities say many parents are clueless about their kids' MySpace profiles.

CBS News Technology Analyst Larry Magid had a look at one personal profile on the site, belonging to a 15-year-old girl.

Magid says the girl writes in her description, "Drink a 40, smoke a bowl, sex is good, life is great, we are the class of 2008."

"Now if you were a predator and you read something like that," asks Hughes, "what would it tell you about this young lady?"

"I'd target her, I think," Magid replies.

In talking to some teens who regularly use MySpace, it's easy to see that a lot of kids aren't very careful about the information they put on their pages.

"So many people don't even use common sense," says Katie Pirtle, a high school student. "Some people even put their phone number on there."

And while they information kids put on MySpace may be intended for their friends, do they think, "Hey there's 35-year-old or 45-year-old guys out there looking at my site?"

"Definitely not," says April Ehrlich, another high school student. "When they think MySpace, they think other teenagers. They don't think there are adults pretending to be teenagers on there."

A lot of MySpace users post "the survey," which asks for responses about issues like drinking, drug use and skinny dipping. Users can also put up pictures.

MySpace declined CBS News' request for an interview. The site warns users not to post any "personally identifiable" material — but the teens we spoke to say that advice is routinely ignored.

"Just like a car accident, it can happen to you," says high school student Julia Rinaldi. "Predators can come to you — and that's what they don't think when they post those things."

Those predators include men like 26-year-old Jeffrey Neil Peters, who was arrested last month for sexually assaulting Susie Granger's daughter. Granger says parents should keep their kids off the site.

"Please don't allow your children to go onto MySpace," she says. "It's a very unsafe environment for them to be in."

But for the thousands of teens who are hooked on the site, it's a warning that's lost in cyberspace.

I had to move this as I didn't want Evin's hard work to get lost in a discussion of is everyone on myspace a predator.

People actually use myspace as a networking thing and like BAC said for promoting their music as well. Sure there are predators just being pervs there, but that doesn't make every user a perv.

This whole issue is probably just as common with instant messenging like AIM, or MSN. It is a lot easier to read up on someone and get a lot info on them in MySpace, but it is extremely easy to hide your identity on an IM service and be a predator on there.

I had a vague notion that you were making a reference to pervs ... but that same analogy holds to simply using the internet in general ... especially those of us who post on message boards without disclosing our real names ... just because some people who do that sort of thing are pervs doesn't drag all of us down and call us into question (well, except bearbac, who clearly is deranged).

I actually have a lot of friends who are on myspace.com for business and personal networking reasons as well ... the myspace.com backlash is kind of one of those media-driven "be very afraid" sorts of campaigns.

I have one of those Myspace profiles that I've used for re-connecting with friends that I haven't heard from in some time. It's fun to send messages to others, but I won't respond to messages from people I don't know. And I don't use it for perverted means. It's a good thing in some respect, but like anything else, you have to be careful.

I agree completely. I was basically speaking in generalities but I used AIM and MSN jsut as references. But, the thing I really agree with you on is that it is just a media-driven campaign.

just signed up as we hope to reconnect with fellow Bobcats over 30. Sorry to those posters younger than that, we like all Bobcats, but would really like to reconnect with those in our peer group. Being military we move and lose touch with those we met there. Anyway, PapaG said he hasn't encountered any pervs so we'll see. There are 365 cats in one group under the search Montana State, but so far the kids seem young.

To keep the 'pervs' away just ignore the "Friend" requests you get. The only people typically looking at my page are family members and a few friends if I update the pics. I've caught up with 3 other MSU grads that I hadn't heard from in quite a while.

All in all, not a bad site, and you can't beat the price.

I too have a MySpace account for friends... I don't add a friend just to have as many friends as possible, I add people I actually know or mutual friends. I can't believe the people who put down their whole life story on their pages for the entire internet world to see. There are too many uneducated people posting things they shouldn't be posting, and there are too many people who prey on those kids/adults. It's really sad.

I think I kept mine plain jane enough, although I did put a pic file of our family for friends to see. who knows may be someone will let us know if we're getting better looking with age!

We do appreciate the efforts of our troops (my baby sis is in Germany as an RN from a Reserve unit in Helena. She'll be back in July after an 18 month stint and she did a 15 month stint over there a couple years before this tour).
