UM enrollment is up

Post by TomCat88 » Mon Sep 27, 2021 4:22 pm

Or so they say. I'm not sure I'm reading what they're saying right:

1.
the university saw a 3% increase in its total enrollment for the fall 2021 semester compared to fall 2020, bringing it to 10,106 students.
The first-time entering freshman class grew by nearly 30% and currently sits at 1,276 students, which accounts for about 21% of UM’s total enrollment this semester
If 1,276 freshman make up roughly 20% of the total enrollment, then wouldn't the enrollment be about 6,300 and not 10,106? And isn't that growth of 30% just a reflection of students coming back after COVID?

2.
the university improved its student retention rate, which is now at 75.4%.
Doesn't retention rate eventually get better as you continue to get smaller? As in you don't have as many students to retain over time.

1,276 = (.21 x 10,106) x HTCF

When you back out the Missoula College and Graduate students, UM campus is only about 6,200 undergrads. I think this article was all intended to portray a positive picture.

With UM freshman enrollment at 1,276, that seems to be a bad number. Didn’t MSU just report about 3,600 freshman? Here are numbers from 2019 and 2018.

Math seems a little fuzzy on this. It will be interesting to see the raw data.

Good headline though….especially on a day when the law school had a negative spotlight on it.

Wow, a decade ago it would've been absolutely inconceivable to think of MSU tripling UM in freshman class sizes. Whoever made the call to hire Cruzado despite some not insignificant public criticism deserves a major pat on the back.
