Airplane wrecks

Post by TomCat88 » Fri Aug 13, 2021 6:19 pm

Why do airplanes have oxygen mask systems, but not parachutes?

Why do boats have lifeboats and life jackets, but airplanes don’t have parachutes?

I’m sure there’s a logical answer, but it isn’t coming to me.

There are times when I read your posts I think you should have been in the Army pondering points with other 2LTs such as: When the clock hits 2400 hours, did time actually end or did the new day actually begin? Life is full of perplexing thoughts, for instance, people (albeit damn few) choose to live in places such as Valley, Daniels, Sheridan Counties in Montana. Why? So they can escape in February and March to go watch their grandkids play high school basketball before they go to college and take a job in a place like Colorado Springs? I don't get a lot of it.

I’m a self admitted idiot but might it have something to do with how fast commercial planes travel and it’d be virtually impossible to jump out at those speeds?

A HALO jump is 30 to 40 thousand feet and the plane has to be moving out at that elevation. I thought Sir Tom was just being a smart ass with his query.

No, I just have no idea about the physics of all this. Didn't DB Cooper jump out of a moving passenger jet? I mean if the plane is going down, you should be able to grab a parachute and give it a shot. But, yes, this is probably physically impossible.

This whole topic is bananas and I think Tom is on the sauce tonight but don’t super fast fighter jets have seats that eject with a parachute in case of emergency?

Short answer: There are a few reasons, including the lack of parachute training of passengers, high speed of the airplane, cold temperatures at that altitude, non-conducive design of commercial planes and the cost spike, which make putting parachutes onboard commercial airplanes unviable.
I bet that's the main reason why.

Why do we park on driveways but drive on parkways?

If pro is the opposite of con then it follows that progress is the opposite of congress (pretty obvious there) and if the black box in planes, cars and boats are indestructible, why don't they make the rest of those vessels out of the same material?

So that people spend all that damn money fishing Iceland for big browns and don't know about this?

I understand the Catholics and holy water. But, holy fecal matter? As a kid back in the 50s and 60s, every time one of my aunts or uncles up in northeast Monana would exclaim "Holy sh*t" I'd look around for my preacher uncle. Still amazes me everytime I go to watch one of my cousin's kids get their crazy ass up on a bull or race around the barrels and my cousin would exclaim "Holy sh*t! That was a good ride!" Just another one of life's mysteries I suppose.

I am thinking about selling our house just outside Bozeman and moving. After 37 yrs, I want less people and more uncrowded waters. My wife will not like moving to Greenland.

Well, one can think of many reasons as the narrator in the Greenland video said, "Just one more cast." can go on and on in some places. As far as the wife not wanting to go to Greenland?

That's a shame. I'll make up for it and you can show her this, even though it's kind of a fad. Norway and Russia are just as good without as many people.

DB Cooper jumped from a 727 which has a back staircase that can be deployed in flight. He had the pilot slow to a survivable speed to jump.
Other than a 707 which has military uses and has an egress chute to escape from there is no other passenger airplane today that will accommodate parachuting from.
