I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I LIVE in Bozeman and still hadn't heard that Grunch died.

How the heck are we can live with out the Crystal? Come on people think of the children.

100% exactly my thoughts, all of it. Couldn't believe I didn't know and can't imagine going downtown without a trip to the Crystal!

You Bozeman slackers ... I knew he had died (can't remember where I read that), but this "no will" thing is makes a bad story even worse. Hope they sort it out fast. Bozeman needs the Crystal.

well if they don't get it figured out, the American Legion is opening October 6th and grand opening November 11th, if that helps.

I worked at the Crystal in the '90s and it was common knowledge that Grunch didn't have a will. It was always said that when he died the deed to the bar was just going to be thrown into street and the first person to grab would own the bar.

I guess this could be the end of the last dive bar in Bozeman - I heard that KO's closed as well.

Sad days in Bozo! :(

I didn't think KO's closed. But I would place the Eagle's Club and maybe the Hauf as the last dive bars.
But as stated earlier, with the Legion opening again and the R Bar opening next year, I think it will be back to almost normal. I do like the crystal for power hour though. Tough to beat.

Yeah you are right, the Eagles and the Hauf are still good dive bars - maybe the Scoop also? But the R-Bar stopped being a dive when they remodled it a while back. Are they going to reopen the Legion the same as it was before? I remember watching MNF games there in high school, drinking beer in my lettermans jacket - good stuff!

My brother drove by KO's on Thursday night and said it was closed but I haven't talked to KO in a couple of years so I don't know.

Bars that are much the same as in the 80's...and before:

Filling Station
Haufbrau
Scoop -- although not exact since they took the popcorn machine out. :)
Molly Brown
Eagles
Legion -- same crowd... new building
Crystal --
Cannery -- can't remember when it came into existence..
Korner Club -- new building from the 80's... but otherwise unchanged.

Hope the Crystal survives... but with new ownership comes their personal changes to make it "better." Yeah, right.

I'm not sure I'd say the Molly is the same as in the 80's....at least not the early 80's which was my era. Isn't it just sort of a pool hall type place now? When I was at MSU, it was the best place in town (possibly the best place in Montana) to go watch great live rock and roll bands. I practically lived at the place, especially my last couple of years there. For my senior year I got an apartment close to the Molly, because I figured it would be cheaper to have to drive to campus, but be within wallking distance to the Molly, rather than vice versa.

Yeah, you're right... it's a similar situation as the Cat's Paw... generally same exterior; but big changes inside. Never spent much time at the Molly... at the triangle I was much more of a Scoop fan.

The Molly was my favorite place in college ('08). It was the best place to get your drink on, but certainly not the best place to meet women.

They are starting to get live bands back, but when I was in college there were never any. You'd just go down, play pool, and drink $2 Jager shots and $3.75 pitchers.

I haven't been to any of the "Triangle" bars in years, but I've sorta been craving a Lannyburger at the Hauf. You can still get a Lannyburger there....right?

So, does the Molly generally have live music on weekends these days? Is there anyplace else in town that has live rock and roll bands?

You sure can, amongst other things at the Hauf I believe the menu is still much the same. Plus they have pretty good daily specials.
