I was talking with a buddy the other day about how much fun it is to go to concerts. I've been to a ton, but here are a few that really stick out in my mind as being good shows...I'm sure I've forgetting a few. What are some great shows/bands that you would recommend?
My top 5:
Pearl Jam (’98 in Missoula)
Dave Matthews (Gorge ‘98)
Rolling Stones (Missoula)
Counting Crows w/ John Mayer and Maroon 5 (Some outdoor amphitheatre in Salt Lake City)
Tom Petty (Fieldhouse)
Honorable Mention (No particular order):
Trans Siberian Orchestra (Seattle)
James Taylor (Fieldhouse)
Toby Keith w/ Rascal Flatts (Fieldhouse)
Matchbox 20 w/ Train and Pete Yorn (Fieldhouse)
Jason Mraz w/ G-Love and Bushwalla (Fieldhouse)
Willie Nelson (Big Sky)
Vampire Weekend (Missoula)
Bob Dillon (Fieldhouse)
Def Leppard w/ Joan Jett (Fieldhouse)
Offspring (Bozeman Fairgrounds)
Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Fieldhouse)
Bush w/ No Doubt (Missoula)
B.B. King (Fieldhouse)
Kings of Leon (Seattle)
Gov’t Mule w/ Grace Potter. (Boise)
Barnaked Ladies w/ The Clintons (Fieldhouse)
RUN DMC w/ Parliment (Shroyer Gym)
Fleetwood Mac (Fieldhouse)
Going to an OAR/Citizen Cope concert later this summer. Also seeing Michael Franti w/ Flobots in Missoula.

Neil Young - Solo
it was just neil with his harmonica surrounded by about a dozen acoustic guitars and 500 of his closest friends. he'd play a song, stand-up, look around, pick out a different guitar, sit back down, dip the harmonica in water, shake it off, then continued on ruling

TOOL
EASILY the best show i've been to. a spectacle. they tend to play similar sets, but if you're a first timer, you'll enjoy yourself.
honorable mention:
pearl jam-unbelievable live band
acdc- they're old, their songs all sound the same, and they rock. HARD.
nitty gritty dirt band- have seen them a few times. saw them at the hideout last summer in GF. terrific show.
i'm seeing derek trucks in billings in a few weeks. i'm sure he'll make the list.
i have a feeling mikey's laudry list of show is coming...

What on earth would make you think that...
So what, I'm a concert whore, big whoop. Wanna fight about it?
Here's some of my personal favorites in no real particular order:
Pearl Jam - Missoula 2005 (Was a pretty sloppy show, however, being front row, dead center helped me not notice. Had the pleasure of seeing PJ 11 times and each show is still awesome!)
VH1 Rock Honors The Who Concert - Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, Incubus, Tenacious D, Pearl Jam AND The Who. Pretty awesome!
Rage Against the Machine and MUSE - Vegoose Festival
Avett Brothers - Boulder, Colorado
Them Crooked Vultures - Denver at the Fillmore
Pearl Jam - Two nights at the Gorge. Each night billed as "An Evening with Pearl Jam" no opener. Just Pearl Jam.
TOOL - Gorge (two weeks after Pearl Jam at the Gorge and two weeks before Dave Matthews at the Gorge. Again, spectacle of a show)
Sasquatch Festival 2009 - Animal Collective, Devotchka, The Decemberists, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Kings of Leon on day one and Avett Brothers, TV on the Radio, Nine Inch Nails, and the original Jane's Addiction lineup on day two.
Lollapalooza - The Donnas, Rooney, Jurassic 5, Incubus, Audioslave and Jane's Addiction all in one day
AC/DC - Denver and Tacoma Rock City (like stache said, they're old, their songs sound similar, but dang! Only downfall of Tacoma was we got rear ended by a car on I5 a few hours before the concert. Couldn't tell the next day if I was sore from the show or from the minivan that tried to go through us instead of around).
Stone Temple Pilots - Salt Lake City
Dave Matthews Band - Sydney, Australia in a tiny theatre of 2000
Queens of the Stone Age - Salt Lake City
MUSE - Oakland (much like TOOL and AC/DC, their show is a spectacle. Ridiculous lights and stage setup)

You liked Tool? I heard they play well live, but the performance is dreadful. The lead singer just stood midstage by a speaker and didn't do anything but sing.

if all you noticed at a tool concert was the singer was stationary, you'd be missing a lot. your friend musta been on some powerful drugs.
i'm a weirdo. i guess i don't need an "active" band to enjoy their music. oh, and their stage will melt your brain.

John Mellencamp, Garth Brooks (even though I don't like country), Weird Al (changes into a costume for every song, it was sweet haha)
I haven't got to see much, sadly.

Lawrence Welk, State Fair Great Falls....
Just kidding, but I think I remember some of my older relatives going...I think....I was only 4 or 5 at the time....
Actually one of the better concerts I went to was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at the Alberta Bair before it was remodeled, mid 80's. It was pretty wild.
Hank Jr. in Butte, can't remember if it was a good one but it was definitely one of the loudest concerts I have been to....

I've been to a few of the same concerts as you. I remember DKM opened for the BossTones, before they went celtic.
What else was good...
Butthole Surfers in the Greek Ampitheatre in Berkeley
Fugazi in Missoula
Hank III in Missoula
Fishbone in Big Sky
Pogues in Showbox in Seattle
David Byrne in Budapest
The Mars Volta at the Valley Ice Garden
Gogol Bordello at Sasquatch
Willie Nelson in Big Sky
Pearl Jam in Missoula '94 (I was back stage as the opening bands guitar tech - despite my uselessness at that job)
William Elliot Whitmore Seattle
My most favorite shows have always been the local bands and people that I know. Skoi Dats, Orgone Box, Sasshole, The Banned, and too many more to remember them all. Those were fun days.

The Banned?!? Wow, haven't heard their name mentioned much lately! Graduated with a couple of those guys.
Jimmy Buffett - Gorge (1996)
Garth - Missoula (twice)
Def Leppard - Bozeman
Quiet Riot (JD's Night Club in Helena) That place was f-ing loud!
Dr. Hook (JD's Night Club)
Meat Loaf - Gorge
... and my very first concert, Huey Lewis in Helena (1984... when they were at the height of popularity

Pearl Jam - pick any of the Seven that I've been to... probably the Missoula 05 one or maybe with Tom Petty in Minneapolis - that was frigging awesome!
Metallica in Billings in 92?
Alice in Chains in Spokane in 93.
Foo Fighters in Minneapolis in 09.
Alternative Nation in Sidney, Australia in 95... incredible show with 30 some bands.
George Thorogood in Texas in mid 90's... wasn't expecting much but he blew me away.
But then there's Live, Kiss, Deftones... ugh - too many great ones to pick favorites!

Dave Matthews Band - The Gorge '09
Modest Mouse - The Shrine '05 and the GC Fairgrounds '07
Bright Eyes - Missoula '05
Atmosphere & POS - GC Fairgrounds '09
Most of the main stage line up at Headwaters this year was pretty damn good... from the parts I remember anyway.
