haven't recieved mine yet but when i do i'll happily fill it out and mail it in. but here's what i don't understand. they need these so they can get a proper count of how many people are living here right? well when reading about the last time we had to fill these out they say that only 72% of the country participated. am i the on;y one that finds that funny? probably. but it seems to me that one of two things happened. one, they have no idea how many people, (or what percentage) didn't participate....or two, they should just be able to count the people who participated, add in the 28% that supposedly didn't participate, and voila....you're done. it's called census for idiots...

I filled mine out....partially. I am not going to fill in my name and phone number for who lives at my address. They say that information is confidential (for geneaology purposes only....seriously....that's what is says!), not shared with other gov't agencies, not shared with law enforcement, not even shared under freedom of information act inquires. I don't care...I don't buy it.

Irony.....bitchin about privacy and protecting name & number, then freely giving it out on St. Patrick's Day invitation thread. Must trust my fellow BN'ers

The Progressives only use this cenus information for polictical purposes. Research it yourself if you don't believe me.

I know, I know, your professors told you differently. God Bless em.

That, and w/ FB and twitter we will tell anyone on-line where we are and what we're doing! How crazy is that? Check out the site, pleaserobme.com and see how "open"/stupid people are!

Going to fill ours out now. I'm really curious is there's going to a question on there that they don't already know the answer to somewhere in the Gov't databases.

I'll fill mine out completely cuz I ain't got nothin' to hide, but I do find it interesting that the outside of the envelope says something to the effect that "it's required by law". Really? And if you don't complete it, exactly how are they going to prosecute you if they don't know you exist? Oh, that's right... they already do.

Are Americans actually more paranoid now than at any other time in history, or does the internet and the 24 news cycle just give the illusion that Americans are more paranoid now than at any other time in history?
It's just a census ... it provides information that is useful to all of us ... it would be cool if it was relatively accurate ... just fill it out and send it back in. I'm looking at you, crazy anti-census talking heads!

I filled it out and kept checking to make sure I hadn't missed something. Seriously, who lives with you and their race. They should already have that info from the Social Security numbers we all get when born now. Perhaps not the race, hence my previous comment.
I'm not opposed to the census, but after I saw the ad on the Superbowl and realized I helped pay for that million dollars I started wondering if they don't already have all that info on their databases somewhere and perhaps the census was no longer needed.

I agree that the Superbowl ad was a waste of money.
They probably have most of this information in a general sense (the population of the entire U.S.), but they don't know where individuals live with any degree of reliability. So it seems to be mostly about local numbers as opposed to national numbers.

It's primary purpose is to determine representation in the House of Reps. I'm rather dumbfounded by anyone who doesn't fill it out (or doesn't complete it accurately), particularly in a state like Montana where representation is a such a limited commodity.

No I think we've been this paranoid the entire 200+ years. It just may be one of our strengths. I'm sure there was some super paranoid talk around the Civil war, In 1776, 1930's, The Cold war, Watergate and Vietnam. We might just be the most paranoid country in the history of the world. It does get old after awhile. Heck the American way of life has been ending since I was 10 Years old. Did you know this coming election is the most important one in the history of this nation.

Thank you for putting things into perspective for me ... good points. Your last line cracked me up ... and is spot on.
Okay, so it must just be the internet and 24 hour news cycle that is making it impossible for us to escape the paranoia for even a day or two.

I heard it cost something like $10 billion to do the census. I bet some math geek at MIT or Cal Tech could get a better answer for about $100K.

No way, the government is the best at pretty much everything they are shrewd savy businessmen.
No way a private sector organization can compete with Hussein Obamas thuggernaut.

Yeah - A retired friend of mine said he hired on as a "Senseless" worker to collect some easy coin. He called just as he was about to launch his raft on the Clark Fork to scour the banks for folks that may be living by the river (in vans or card board boxes). He had spent the previous couple days in the mountains taking every right turn until he could go no further on each old logging road, etc. and logged in over 650 miles to deliver 31 packets. The $0.50/mile they pay him makes it real easy to spend time in the woods. One downside is that some of the folks don't open their doors and he's pretty sure he had a gun on him at least once before he just hung the packet on the doorknob.
I probably won't be able to talk to him anymore until he is retired again. Dang revenuers....
