Magnetic Car Ribbons, ENOUGH!!

Post by mslacat » Wed Nov 17, 2004 2:50 pm

************* MSLACAT RANT ALERT *************

OK, can we talk about those Magnetic Ribbon that everyone now has on their cars right
now! I don't do bumper stickers, baby on board, or Magnetic ribbon message thing on
my cars! I do not like'um, and refuses to allow them on any car I own/drive. The closest
you can say are my vanity plates.

Now god bless all of you that want remember our troops etc. that wonderful. That said
though my sister in law , who's ex was a marine, has six of them on the back of her trunk.
The problem is that it is a Honda Civic. The back end of a Civic is not big enough to
handle 6 of these ribbon. One or two would work fine, SIX, we get the point! The other
problem she has is that when ever she is stopped at a light and a SUV pulls up behind her,
the Civic gets yanked back and stuck on the SUV's front bumper!!

I supposed you are wondering what caused this rant, no... well I am going to tell you
anyway! I got an email and then a call from my lovely wife, the social worker/world
saver. She found a site, that sell magnetic ribbons, and want us both to buy three
Magnetic Ribbons to bring awareness to Domestic Violence, Aids research, and Breast
Cancer and put them on our Cars. Lets make this perfectly clear I have volunteered
hundreds of hour both personally and professional to assist the Domestic Violence
programs in Missoula and western Montana. I have friends and relatives who have been
touched by the Aids epidemic and god knows there is no body who appreciates breasts
more than I do! I do not ,though, want to drive around with tacky magnetic aplicays on
my car! I like the fact my car is a pretty boring gold color w/ no pinstripping, chrome
wheels, or fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror. I do not want to show up at a clients
place and end up spending 5 minutes explaining my car! Is this too, much to ask. Then
why am I going to spend the night on the couch!

The Bobcat / Griz contest warm up is at the Mslacat house!

mslacat: I couldn't agree more with your position. I can't stand lots of flair on a car, either. You're taking the right position.

Maybe you can argue that you have public safety concerns as you don't want to distract other drivers, but that you prefer to advance noble causes to people in other venues where people don't have the potential to kill other people due to not paying attention to the road?

I think these ribbons started out with the right idea--supporting <insert cause near and dear to your heart here>.

Now, however, the statement has become cliche. Similar to the boy that cried wolf, any statement made too often dilutes the same statement when it's made successive times.

I have seen these banners in stores too. I thought about purchasing one, but I could not find any promise that some part of the purchase price would go towards some benefit for our troops.

It is a great idea, but it looks like some liberal is taking advantage of the emotional times for a quick buck. I know a good conservative would be donating some funds to help the troops.

Hey, you know, from my point of view liberals would not have the sense to keep the money for themselves. They would give it all away, to save the trees, hug a whale or the spotted snail darter fund! On the other hand a good conservative would think it was a good exercise in the free market place economics. Come up with an idea, produce a product, sell it for what the market will bare, and keep the profits to reinvest in the market place is the best way to benefit our country and thus our troops!!

Go figure we all have a different take on things! I am right, though, and you are wrong. I am sure our free wheel'n capitalist, republican, fiscial conservative, card carrying Rush Limbaugh club member BAC will bac (pun intended) me up on this one!!

I'm going to assume you are trying to be ironic by your reversal of the common stereotypes in your post. If so, it works.

Well, with Utah and Idaho factored in, I am sure the charitable contributions are pretty high (as a function of income). That still doesn't explain your silly suggestion that conservatives aren't greedy, but liberals are. As mslacat pointed out, which party is the champion of capitalism? And what is capitalism based upon? Greed. If you knew your stereotypes, you would know that the liberals are supposed to be the ones working for socialism, so they wouldn't believe in selling stuff at a profit -- they would want the government to take care of it for them.

Ya gotta know your stereotypes when you're making silly comments, or they just end up looking even sillier than they otherwise would.

So I now have to assume that you were being serious with your post? That kind of kills the humor I saw in it.
