Deal record broken

Post by mchammer » Sat Feb 17, 2024 9:57 am

Bobcat All-American and Hall of Famer Lance Deal held the record for the longest throw with the 35 lb weight, 84-9 set in 1995. It was broken yesterday by Dan Haugh at the USATF National Indoor Championships. Dan threw 86-5. Deal's American Record with the hammer was broken a few years ago after holding 27 years. Lance won a silver in the '96 Olympics in the hammer. Deal is the only American to medal in the Olympics in this event for the last 60 years.

Incredible... I was at a Masters T&F meet years ago in Bozeman and Lance's dad competed. Very impressive.

A side note; there was an old fellow competing in the distances. Herb something. He was in his upper 80s. Competed for quite a few years after that. I moved away in 82 and lost track of him.

Lance's Dad never competed in the Masters Meet. Tom Gage, '72 Olympian, did many times. He was a mentor and friend to Deal. Herb Kirk completed the Sweet pea 5K run at age 104. He was a WWI aviator among other things.

Thank you for the memory refill. Must have been Tom Gage.

Majorly impressed with Herb Kirk.
