Seems like not too long ago 18 feet was the world record. Is it the poles? Pole vault is so cool to watch and for me so incomprehensible to do.

As I’ve put into a couple other threads: I’m always amazed at the success of these TF squads. How does one even practice for pole vault, high jump etc with our facilities limited to the Brick and with the BB court installed let alone attempt record heights?Just amazing.

Might be dating yourself a little bit. The 18 foot barrier was broken in 1970, 19 feet in 1981. 20 feet in 1991, and the record is currently 20-4 1/4 held by Mondo Duplantis of Sweden.

I should have looked it up. That's a little earlier than I would have guessed.

Track & Field will be all kinds of fun to watch this year with MSU bringing back all of their athletes who made it to nationals last year. Here's hoping Duncan Hamilton can get that national championship this year.

I’m thinking I’ll root for Duncan Hamilton over Duncan Ferguson….but you did make me look at the T&F roster to try to find Mr. Ferguson.
And a National Championship would be special!!!!

Ha, not sure how I ended up with the name of a former Scottish soccer player there but thanks for the correction!

Pole vault is fairly easy to practice indoors. More and more high schools in Montana have a box installed in the gym floor (that's the part where the pole hits at the end of the runway), and they can fairly easily move their pits and standards into the gym. The Brick is particularly good for T&F training and is a big part of the reason MSU is so much better than UM in track. The Adams Center is better designed for watching basketball, but it's not good for track and basketball at the same time. There are a few events that are tough to train for indoors, but pole vault and high jump are not among them. The 100M is tough, as you can't replicate that distance in a straight line, as are the 110M hurdles, 400M hurdles, steeplechase, discus, and javelin. Distance running is boring but doable. Obviously there are some adjustments for most events to practice indoors, but nothing major.

Are there limits to # of scholarships for T&F. Watching the championships and NAU has 7 in nearly ever distance race most other teams 3 or 4, and they also have representation in about every event. Just seem like they have more athletes

Scholarships total for outdoor, indoor, and cross country are 12.6 for men and 18 for women. There are no roster limits that I know of. Depends on each schools title IX.

Is it similar to football where they can split to partials. I suppose with their reputation NAU can get many to walk on or take partials

Yes. I counted 40 guys on the roster. Most probably get academic schollies also.

Split dual with UM, men lose after losing 4×400 relay in very close race. I was little surprised. We're some athletes out?
